Probably the closest gaming franchise in representing historical places to a large scale is the Total War series

Man I love this series so much, hell even Odyssey although I think it's okay in terms of lore as a game itself it's great

Rome 1 total war did a very good job in my opinion portraying ancient Greece

    • @bogdan3386
      @bogdan3386 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Solafar_VB also Rome 2 represents quite well the most important cities at the time like Rome, Athens, Ctesiophon etc and even in Attila I like how detailed Constantinople is. Also Rome 1 was truly special. The thing is that I kind of regret buying Rome 2, even though it looks good and after all the patches it's playable I get bored very fast and even the DEI mod that everyone seems to recommend doesn't help me to get rid of the amount of boredom that Rome 2 gives me. That's why from the series I play a lot of Rome 1, Med 2 and Attila and even Shogun 2 and Warhammer from time to time. I feel that after all these patches Rome 2 missed the mark the most when it comes to the Greek factions because they all feel the same.

I do not agree. I have played most of Total War games and I didn't find the exact representation that Odyssey does.
Consider of hundreds of exact representations of buildings and historical locations of Athens, Mycenae, Knossos, Phaistos, Olympia, etc, that Odyssey did.
Odyssey made en epic representation for the first time in gaming history.
As a Greek, I thank the creators and I wish, some time later , they will return with more historical locations of Ancient Greece.
Odyssey, did not mention them all. Only a 10% or less.

Discovery mode wasn't available yet when the game was released, that's why they haven't mentioned it. And you really need to watch OSP's video about Alkibiades. It's really great and funny. :D
Renaissance Florence is Blue's favourite historical city, iirc, that's why the Duomo is in the background. He really likes AC2 as well. Has interesting streams on the channel about AC2, and Renaissance italian history.

The only game I know of that really dives into realism, like, no magic abilites, no starting off with a heroic past and really hitting home with the reality is Kingdom Come Deliverance. It's set in early 15th century Bohemia. It does have a more 'special' plot line if you play long enough but nothing so unrealistic that it diverges from it's goal. It's certainly not a game for everyone but Im personally a huge fan and I think Warhorse Studios has made great strides in improving their game. I hope Mr. Terry also reacts to it if he wants to!

Also, you could check out their History Makers series about people who actually wrote works of historical importance such as Anna Komnena's Alexiad.

my favorite tiny detail that threw me off were the herms. Having only learned of them from Red, walking around the village and coming across busts of a striking man with a beard threw me off, and then I remembered their video on Hermes. I was so excited on that first tiny detail. Only thing missing is... well...
Then I find a side quest that takes me to a island with a rotting castle on it. As someone dead-set on one day traveling through Greece and Italy taking in ruins like it, I was ready for some fun. First thing I realize when I step on the island? The name. ODYSESSEUS
I couldn't stop grinning like a little kid as I stormed his castle, killing all those who dared to disrespect my favorite Greek hero in such a way. Haven't had the chance to play more of it, but it sticks with me always.

I think maybe they could have made the army/navy split more prevalent in the form of difficulty. Have it so land battles as Sparta are basically on easy mode with less enemies or at least weaker ones. Same thing for Athens and naval battles. This, of course, means that if you want that total victory, you'd need to overcome the odds as Sparta at sea or as Athens on land. Maybe have some sidequests about gaining some early Persian allies as Sparta, or adding in some other kind of "Not 100% historical, but not outlandish enough we can handwave it" option for Athens and an army.

To be fair, while it's not reflected in the gameplay, it's at least acknowledged in dialogue that Spartans are not comfortable with naval warfare and that Athens really hold the advantage att sea. Eagle bearer got to give the Spartans a pep talk on it.

When I see 'ruins' in a game already set in ancient times, I have to stop and remember they were as far removed from the cultures whom created these structures as we are now from the game setting. The snowball effect of change is hard to comprehend sometimes given the present state of the world, and one would think it has to settle down from the breakneck pace we find ourselves in.

Athens population in 330 BC (census of Demetrius) was 695,000 inhabitants.
Paris population in 1790 AD was 750,000 inhabitants.
Athens in Odyssey feels as empty as New York did in AC3 (1775 AD) population 25,000. Not like Paris did in AC: Unity.
Athens was WAY too empty in Odyssey. As in incorrectly empty.

I personally found exploring the world in Origins more intriguing and fun than I did in Odyssey. I liked them both, but maybe I'm just more interested in Egypt as it's less represented in western media. I also thought Origins had a better player character, but that's not really relevant. The portrayals of historical characters in Odyssey were definitely more developed and compelling. Socrates was my personal favorite. In Origins, Caesar was little more than a caricature of the real man, and I thought they were too generous to Cleopatra. Overly Sarcastic LOVES Cleopatra though. (In the pursuit of her own ambitions she lost Egypt's independence for a millennium! I don't get the fascination.)

I love odyssey but if you want a more realistic game, look for kingdom come deliverance. It's setting is in bohemia in early 15th century.
It's definitly more grounded experience, you have to complete everyday tasks in the game like eating and sleeping, sharpening your blade and much much more.
Available on ps4 as well since i know you prefer that, same as me :)
It's gameplay might not be as good as odyssey but it's enjoyable and i really recommend it for your gaming channel.

Complaining about relying on the fictional story in the background is kinda stupid though, the fiction (Abstergo vs Assasins, Hidden Ones vs Ancients) is what started the whole franchise. The world itself is fictional trying to get across that this cult order has been puppeteering things since the dawn of the feud. We're supposed to live in a world where they were moving all the pieces in history over the actual collective doing that to us now. This game isn't reying to teach us real history, its supposed to get us interested in history enough to go look that shit up ourselves. Hence why so many AC players also happen to love or have developed a love for REAL history through it.
