      @@melkibens Hi, the article I wrote says I don't recommend it. Shooting this video was very very difficult with it (unless you just want to snorkel and don't want manual control) . Do take a look at the article. I think if you want to buy a housing for your phone, it would be better to read it first.

      Hi José, I recommend using a dive rated housing instead like the Weefine universal housing. You have better control of the camera settings with that housing. The snorkeling housing is ok for snorkeling but you can't use the touchscreen underwater. You can see more in my blog post here bro 😊

    • @KayBurn

      Right now, if I dive with the phone, I use a Weefine dive housing for it. However the controls are very limited.
      For this video, I used the Huawei snorkeling housing but all settings had to be made before I went underwater to get full manual controls.
      You should be aware that all underwater dive housings available for phones will require the use of special camera applications that are activated only through button presses. Touch screen controls are not available so its very difficult to incorporate regular phone functions like zoom, or modes available with the phone's regular camera app.

      It's not that hard... Good lighting underwater to bring out colours, stable video requires a tripod or putting a weight to steady your housing.... And finally shoot as low as possible to bring your subjects to eye level which gives them more character and a personal feel 😉

    I bought this case after watching your video. I've set it to 'gloves mode' and 'underwater mode' but it just doesn't work right. Occasionally it's ok but most of the time the phone goes a bit crazy. It's as if the screen is on and the phone is in my pocket opening all sorts of apps and settings, I'm guessing it's the water pressure on the screen. I thought 'underwater mode' would stop this but it doesn't. Also the volume up and down buttons only take a photo whereas one of them was supposed to start video recording. Any advice? I feel cheated out of £50. I'm in Skiathos, Greece right now and would love to use it underwater. One thing I'll say for it though is it doesn't leak (I've only dived to 5m or so).

    • @KayBurn
      @KayBurn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WatermanSurin this video was shot with quite a degree of difficulty. I was in very shallow water and basically used Pro mode instead of underwater.
      What I did was find my subject first, set everything such as zoom WB and focus, keep my finger on the screen to maintain the focus choice before ducking underwater.... After 1 to 2m when the water pressure preses the screen down, I could release my finger from the screen and the settings were maintained (until I pressed stop record) then it would switch back to infinity focus instead of closeup macro.... Took a lot of up and downs to get one segment.
      I chose to do it just to highlight what the images would be like if we had full controls... However the reality for almost all underwater housings is that we will be locked into a wide angle screen and can only use the 40mpix lens on the P30 Pro.
      The Weefine housing does give users some degree of control over focus by manually locking it within their camera app.

    • @KayBurn
      @KayBurn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This housing is only rated to about 10m...definitely not for scuba. The Weefine housing is rated to 80m and its made of aluminum. It's a universal housing for phones no bigger than the P30 Pro. It has a vacuum seal indicator as well which is great.

  • @jason83lew
    @jason83lew 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi, how many meters you dive in to taken this video? Huawei snorkeling case recommended for 10 meters use.

    • @KayBurn
      @KayBurn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jason, Most of the video was within 2-10 meters. The harlequin shrimp and candy crab for example was found at a dive site only 2m deep. Most of the other shots were at 5-6m and only the coleman shrimp was deeper. I had to head to the surface to change manual focus settings, hold that setting on the screen and submerge the housing while holding it in place... otherwise the water contact would make the settings shift.
      For this reason, I can't recommend the Huawei housing if you are planning to shoot macro video like the one in this video. As mentioned in my blog, the Weefine would be a better housing to use. Going up repeatedly to the surface to make changes isn't a safe way to dive, even if at shallow depths.
      However, if you are simply looking to shoot wide angle video while snorkeling, You can certainly use the Huawei housing with all settings in Auto.

      Sorry I missed this earlier. Touching the screen is not an option underwater. This is why I had so much difficulty with this shoot. Its in the review I did.
      What I did to overcome things was to pre focus before heading back down by switching to pro mode and using the manual focus option there. To prevent it from switching or moving when going back underwater, I had to hold my finger on that setting, but record and duck underwater... It then stayed there as i went under. Thanks Dan for checking it out!
      Unfortunately I haven't tested the Weefine yet although I did test it for fit myself at a distributor's shop. I do know of friends who have used it successfully and am also in the process of trying to obtain a unit to test myself to shoot humpbacks in Réunion 😊
      The people I have seen using the housing have been very pleased especially when you have apps like Dive+ for mobile colour restoration work.
      For my video, I didn't use any kind of filter or wet lens. Everything is straight with the camera alone. But I did use lights for bringing out true colours. The Weefine has wet lens options I'm keen to test especially for wide angle use. As a sidenote, my friends who tried the Weefine with the P30 Pro said they could even manually focus with the housing!
      Hopefully I'll be able to review it soon. Stay tuned 😊

    • @KayBurn
      @KayBurn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@slplktr no worries buddy. I know the feeling especially when you are researching for something to buy 😉
      I can't be sure about using Dive+as the app to record the video or taking the images. I can only recommend it for on the go colour correction. I know someone else with this setup that said they preferred to use the Weefine app to control the camera. I know that with the Weefine app, you can do manual focus. This is crucial for video work since you can't tap the screen to fucus and you don't want the focus to change for macro. The Dive+ app can be used just for correcting photo colours. Again I'm not familiar with the Dive+app myself and am going with what people let me know. For macro with lights, you won't need it but it is really useful for wide shots a little deeper....
      The P30 Pro has excellent macro capabilities... I filmed this in 4k and Pro mode, just zooming in a little to fill the frame. I found that I didn't want to zoom in more than 2.5x to avoid grainy shots as its probably just a digital crop. I have been told also that the diopter setup for the P30 Pro in the Weefine does work well.... But again I would want to try it myself before I can truly recommend it.... 😅

      @@KayBurn yeah I've got a speakerproblem too after pool, but I've dried it with a fan and now it still works

    Did you always shoot in 4K? In your article, you said to use manual focusing, what about if we use auto mode in video underwater? Thank you

      Unfortunately with this housing, autofocus in pro mode was not possible. The housing window presses against the screen and causes it to make the focus change. In underwater mode, it should work fine because that mode deactivates screen contact...but I don't think it would work well for anything apart from wide angle shots.

    Hi there, does the underwater case float up when released in water? Or does it sink down?

    • @KayBurn
      @KayBurn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's negative for sure. There are hardly any air pockets. Having said that, I am in Tokyo right now and test fitted the Weefine universal dive housing. It fits contrary to my initial guesses!
      If you haven't read the blog article, please do 😊 I will be updating it though to mention that the Weefine housing fits! It's priced well and even has vacuum seal integration built in!

      @@KayBurn Thanks for the reply, I'll be sure to read your blog article on this P30 Pro. One more thing, is there a tripod mount (screw type) where I could mount a go pro floating handle onto it so that the case would float underwater?

    • @KayBurn
      @KayBurn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ashrafa3368 that would defeat the purpose of a tripod mount though... The idea is to have the camera rest on the bottom (nothing alive of course) without having to touch it or hold it in place.
      I must admit I held things down physically in many situations still... But I also had a lot of footage that didn't work because holding it down resulted in shaky sequences 😅
