Ola you two lovely people! My husband I began watching your channel while living in the states, we've since retired to Portugal and are now watching you here. We love your patience and dedication to getting everything right. Now that we are in Portugal and live near the ocean you should sail here for a visit!! Thanks for sharing your story, we enjoy watching! Stay healthy!
The way you are keeping track of you parts is the best way to do it, you won’t ever put the wrong part in the wrong place. Really good job on the way your mechanical ability has improved
You have an impressive mechanical sense, Duca, what to tap, what to unbolt, and knowing or intuiting what not to force... A whole day too. Not surprised you're tired. Thanks for showing us the "nuts and bolts" of this project!
Really like your channel. You two always seem to do things right. The boat will be like brand new. Take your time, do it right. Peace of mind is a great thing in the middle of the ocean. Again, thanks for the entertainment.
It’s obvious that your engineering backgrounds gives you insight into how mechanical things are designed to work and enable you to visualize how to disassemble the prop shaft. You’re being very methodical in how your disassembling the shaft components and carefully inventorying the parts and documenting with pictures the more intricate pieces. This will make reassembly easier and insure that specific bolts perhaps designed to a particular tensile strength go back where they were designed to be used. I’m impressed with your organization and carefully planned approach designed not only for reassembly, but to avoid potential problems once the project is completed. It’s obvious that you both have carefully considered how to proceed before launching into the project.
That is one quality piece of engineering! I am in awe of the design, and the ease with which it came apart. This boat has been so well built and cared for by the previous owner. (Even when just stored on the hard he took some good precautions). I am glad you found the problem, and will be able to make it as good as new. When you buy well made things, the quality is still there, long after the price has been forgotten!
That shaft seal has been way over engineered, it looks like something an engineering grad student would come up with having had no real world practical experience. This seal system would probably be OK on a submarine but not on a 45 foot yacht. Simplicity and ease of maintenance is the key.
@@PremierNZ-qb5zd What maintenance ? A couple of shots of grease and make sure the oil tank is full. I'll take this kind of overkill anytime. I would definitely want a couple of extra sets of seals.
@@PremierNZ-qb5zd I have seen this same system on one other boat, a 85' custom steel yacht. Those of use with fiberglass or wood boats do not fully understand the need to keep all saltwater outside of the hull. On our boats, a slight drip at the packing is no big deal and we just pump it back overboard with the bilge pump. On these systems, the plan is to always keep ALL saltwater out of the hull so that it will not rust.
I would think seriously about only changing the seals, especially the leaking oil seal. Clean up the bearings, check them for signs of spalling, if none put them back in place. Looking forward to the upcoming video, thanks for sharing.

I think it's a good move to remove & thoroughly clean & restore that shaft with all new seals & bearings using modern greases & oils. As it’s sort of a “sealed” system the reservoir is there to provide fill pressure and monitor the oil level. Think of a brake fluid reservoir in a car. Ok i was only here because of the shipping container house you said you were gonna get back to. Ive been waiting patiently, but you took it out of the intro sooo... haha im kidding. love the channel. Cant wait to see you sail for the first time. I hope you keep the videos coming while youre traveling the world.
Duca and Roberta, did you notice how difficult it was to remove the screws from the base of the wheel stanction that was your Phillips head screws instead of straight head screws. Phillips are designed to be low torque fasteners, they push the screwdriver tip out of the screw recess when you apply high torque either to install or extract the screw. That is the reason straight blade screw fasteners are traditionally used in boat building especially where the fasteners are subject to corrosion. That may explain why the previous owner had all the straight blade hardware aboard when you bought the boat. This is a great channel and I enjoy your story so far. Good Luck Mike S

I have to hand it to both of you that no project is too large. So happy you had the blueprint to the shaft assembly. Great idea to mark each piece with the drawing number. Very impressed with the progress last week and this week. you have truly replaced or refurbished every part on Odd. I wish I could be there with you both to see it live. OH! how is Fred doing? You are very lucky. Had these components corroded it would have been nearly impossible to get these assemblies loose and out. Great video of an interesting seal system.

Wow !! Excellent engineering work building that boat. It will be necessary to see the best quality of the fat. Correct assembly will be essential. Very high quality o-rings. Very good details of disassembly and storage of the well-identified material. Thanks for showing it.
The propeller shaft assembly is very elaborate. I have never worked on one like that. I have had my fair share of stuffing box repairs and dripless repairs. There is a lot that can go wrong in that system. I know everything is going to be fine. Duca, Have you ever thought of getting a battery powered ratchet? Milwaukee makes a good one. Cheers from Colorado.
That is an amazing prop shaft system. I've never seen anything like it. A precision piece of work and even before you took it apart the shaft turned beautifully. Too bad the metal body of the oil seal was damaged. You have the drawings, and a video record so it will be easy to put the prop shaft back together. Once done I'm sure you will never have to be concerned about it again. You have a fantastically high quality bout ad I'm jealous ...Not really... You deserve all the credit. You do beautiful work.
You guys had me talking to myself, "No don't hit it that way. Yes, hit that. No, you dont need to take that apart to get the shaft out." And then you finally triumphed. Good job.

Well done on figuring out all the mechanical drawing and processes. I work on aircraft and aircraft parts and some of them are as much fun as you just had.
😊
Sitting in Grand Rapids michigan with the temps at 13 degrees right now in a winter night this is great to watch. thank you
😬It's cool. Glad you enjoy watching our videos 😊
Great work guys - keep thinking, keep checking and keep at it.
Thanks 😊
Great job! Better in the yard than in the middle of the sea....!!!
I love your work you really don't rush things, when i restored cars 15 years ago it also took long time then i know it will last.
You guys are absolutely incredible.
My legs started hurting just from watching Duca climb up and down that ladder :)
Guys... have done like the professionals. Good...!!!
What is his channel? Thank and be safe.
Thanks for the always support, Lou. Fred’s dad is in the hospital and they are taking care of him
@@OddLifeCrafting I hope Fred's dad is going to be ok. sorry to hear that. You both be safe.
You are very lucky. Had these components corroded it would have been nearly impossible to get these assemblies loose and out. Great video of an interesting seal system.
You guys are fearless. 👍👍👍
Como de costumbre un vídeo muy ilustrativo. Thanks
😊
Your a propelar shaft expert. Congratulations.
Very good and high tech system you have there. As a 25 yr resting place it looks great. Good luck and great job you two
Wow !! Excellent engineering work building that boat. It will be necessary to see the best quality of the fat. Correct assembly will be essential. Very high quality o-rings. Very good details of disassembly and storage of the well-identified material. Thanks for showing it.
😊😍⛵️
Good job.
😂
Hats off to Duca...Roberta also. Se ahorraron mucho $$$
