@ 18:06 As a machinist I have to say that was a brilliant fix for getting grease to that bearing, It's weird that they designed that shaft where there was no way to grease that bearing,I'm surprised it didn't lock up on you from the heat. As always, the best part of my week is seeing a video from Odd Life, it always brightens my day to see you two so happy.
They didn't even show us their use of a dial indicator to measure or check any shaft deflection, runout, vibration, and axial motion during assembly because all of that contributes to the noise the shaft will transmit. The turning of the shaft before assembly was a needed thing to do and they would have checked and correct most problems there but he says casually, "Send to the turner." Making a Bering Housing for the replacement was a great move I agree, and said so to myself when they assembled it the first time when I seen no grease fitting.
I almost sure that they built that way assuming and puting on the Service Manual to change that baring after some sum of Nautical miles. But yeah poor engenering
I think the original design probably had a seal on one side and the other was to be exposed to the oil. That's ok but try to find a double row spherical without a grease groove.
You are now experts on your drive shaft and if anything ever needs fixing again, you will know what to do. A big congratulations to you both for having the stamina to keep focused.
Best of all they video recorded most of it. 10 years form now this drive shaft project would have blended with all the other 100s of projects they have had to learn making recollection of specifics much "fuzzier." I sure wish I had my projects on video for this very reason ;) With age comes a lot of "I used to remember how to do that." Repetition is what makes an expert, expert.

Berings should be packed 30% 0f capacity, over greasing can cause a bearing to fail and over heat. packing the tube would have made more sense. but they filled it with oil.

Agreed. It’s so refreshing to see a woman treated like a person and not an object. A dozen other channels have the husband or boyfriend undoing the female’s bikini top on the daily. That’s not what I’m after - I want to learn things and get inspired to tackle bigger than life projects. I love these two for that.
BTW, one of my oldest friend's favorite sayings: Never enough time to do it right, but always enough time to do it over. YOU are the best of both. Make your 'mistakes' on the dry or in port, and correct them, BEFORE you are 1500 KM from shore, port, or repairs...

Not sure if it matters. But the washer you sanded down to hold the shaft in place. In the last video it was taken off from the propeller end.when pulling the shaft out. Keep up with the good work and progress. you are both inspiring people keep it up 👍🏻

It's a one-off (a custom build boat), and a one-off is build according to a "boat plan". A boat plan has all the construction drawings needed to make the boat from scratch.

That is clearly a superior design. The “thrust bearing” is included which allows the optimal propeller orientation. Most (lesser) sailboats have the “thrust bearing” in the transmission which requires a near perfect shaft alignment to operate.
I believe the advantage of their system is that any engine vibrations won't be transmitted to the propeller shaft. Which is also often a cause for leaks into the boat.
@@peterbodifee The thrust bearings should face each other to cancel the thrust. this is so they can handle the thrust in forward and reverse. If the shaft had slight surface rust that tells me its 400 series stainless steel. 400 series is for strength where 300 series is for corrion restance one is magnetic the other is not. witness marking the components would have maintainng the ballance better to keep vibration down.
My favorite part was when you were bringing the completed shaft to the boat. You had an overhead drone view of your car going by and in the background.... verrrroooooom. LOL, I loved it, really nice touch.
The previous owner was smart in keeping spare, hard to get parts on the boat. Hopefully you will do the same thing. When ordering the parts for the shaft hopefully you ordered extra parts. I like that system, it looks strong.
I think you two are very wise to strip and refurbish all of the critical systems in your boat. After having sat neglected for so long...one can’t say about the condition without putting hands and eyes upon it. Too many TH-cam channels that are about ‘restoration’ only focus on superficial elements and don’t do these thorough disassemblies and repairs. And, you are BOTH hands on with the mechanical work-very refreshing to see both spouses engaged in the effort. Well done! 👍
I have not seen a prop-shaft assembly nearly as complex as this system, but if it will be trouble free without any leakage for years.....then many would love to have it in their own boat! Showing us the ins and outs of installing this system was quite a long and difficult project for you two....so thank you both!!

Duca, the big bearing you had the trouble with is the thrust bearing that transfers the propeller thrust to the hull. The ring that you made will keep the bearing from leaking grease into the boat but it doesn't use grease like you would think. The band and grease zert will hold the grease in the bearing and keep it from backing out. The seals that you put in, retain the grease in the bearing. That's why the other thrust bearing didn't have grease holes in it. Think of it as a wheel bearing on your car. You fill it with grease and after so long you repack the bearing, instead of greasing it regularly. You don't need to pump grease into that bearing very often and one pump is all you should need. If it's hard to pump the grease gun the bearing is full. I hope this helps you. Looking really good.

Odd Life are the true YT TLC...we never stop learning. The biggest lesson need to be learned when owning a sailboat. Don´t cheat. If service and maintenance going to be done, then do it throughly and over extensive.
So cool that all of the major mechanicals are new/refurbished. You have a great safe boat to start living your dreams. Very happy for you and quite a bit envious.
The bearing, when new, comes pre-charged with lube. It is installed into a confined place. The lube installed from the factory will not go anywhere, that is why there is no lube point, that's why some bearings are completely sealed, no lube needed after the initial factory charge. When you pre lubed, packed, the bearing, you did it well enough so the bearing will have enough lube for it's life. Remember, the grease will expand, only a little due to it running in a cool area. If over charged, the excessive amount will find a way out, make a mess and create a possible leak path for water one way or, if you over charge it enough, it will find a way into the oiled part of the system and there will be a leak path for the oil out of it's intended space and allow sea water into the oil space. I get the need for a new bearing, rough spots will turn into really bad spots. The sleeve idea was a great work around to make what you have do the job. If it were me, and the bearing was still pre charged or had been packed before installation, I would NOT lube it after re-installation.
thats what i was thinking. on cars they use bearings on things like a/c idler pulleys that never get lubed but yet they last 100k miles. The bearings are prelubed and have plastic covers over both sides of the bearing to keep the grease inside the bearing and there are some automotive driveshafts (slip yoke) that if you put too much grease inside it will damage them because of compression forces inside but fortunately the housing that bearing is in does not move.
Yep totally agree it was designed to be sealed as part of the overall design concept. Probably only meant to be lubricated during 5 yearly boat out overhaul. If you over lube after install it could cause other issues.
You are absolutly right over greasing can blow out the seals, also to much grease can over heat the bearing and cause spaulding. so be about 30% of capacity.
You guys are sooo smart to do these projects the way you do! By taking your time and learning the right way to repair all the different parts of the boat, you can be any place in the world and if you ever have a problem you will know how to fix it yourself! I give you guys kudos for taking on all these different projects! Your engine room looks amazing! Keep up the great work!

This shaft really seems to be a very good system. Not only for steel boats. It is a convincing and maintenance friendly system and you did right to stick to it! Very good idea to install the greasing nipple onto the bearing! Again an amazing video!

I sincerely believe both of you know much more as a unit than all the different people who might have worked building this boat in the first place as experts of different aspects. @@jackpatteeuw9244 I've seen this done with dry ice to fit a 160mm stainless steel ring inside a housing for a jetski impeller. Also Ferrari uses it to fit valve seats in it engines.
Great job!! You absolutely made the right decision to replace the bearing. And really nice job having that ring machined so you could use the new bearing you had. If you could feel a “bump” in the old bearing it would have quickly disintegrated and failed. Leaving you in a dangerous situations. Failures always happen at the worst possible time. The force is known as thrust. The big bearing you replaced is a double tapered roller bearing. It’s the bearing that takes the thrust of the prop and transfers it to the hull. And that load is why you needed to replace it that bearing. So again, great decision! Cheers, Jeremy
Oil inside shaft have to be ""Transmission oil". It's not 5w40!!! It's another viscosity! Take an attention! and very important: bearings have to be NEW!
@@matthiasweigel311 Yes I know! I said that - insaid have to be Transmission oil! And never motor oil. According to service manual, if you opened bearing module, U must be changed the АLL of the oil seals and bearings including any gaskets!

I worked as the maintenance engineer at a Ford assembly plant. I have sailed since 1957. I will not buy a vehicle newer than the fifth year it has been in use. You are rightly pleased with the many projects you have completed and I hope you are well rewarded on the water for your significant efforts. They are a delight to watch. Bravo!

Putting in that grease fitting was pure genius. the first benefit of what you have learned.

I worked in the bearing business for 16 years. Built bearings from start to boxing to ship. We had a saying. If it don’t roll, it won’t go. Lol

That Is the way in most smaller sailboats. The momentun was transfered to hull vía the engine mounts.

Duca, the big bearing you had the trouble with is the thrust bearing that transfers the propeller thrust to the hull. The ring that you made will keep the bearing from leaking grease into the boat but it doesn't use grease like you would think. The band and grease zert will hold the grease in the bearing and keep it from backing out. The seals that you put in, retain the grease in the bearing. That's why the other thrust bearing didn't have grease holes in it. Think of it as a wheel bearing on your car. You fill it with grease and after so long you repack the bearing, instead of greasing it regularly. You don't need to pump grease into that bearing very often and one pump is all you should need. If it's hard to pump the grease gun the bearing is full. I hope this helps you. Looking really good.

The bearing, when new, comes pre-charged with lube. It is installed into a confined place. The lube installed from the factory will not go anywhere, that is why there is no lube point, that's why some bearings are completely sealed, no lube needed after the initial factory charge. When you pre lubed, packed, the bearing, you did it well enough so the bearing will have enough lube for it's life. Remember, the grease will expand, only a little due to it running in a cool area. If over charged, the excessive amount will find a way out, make a mess and create a possible leak path for water one way or, if you over charge it enough, it will find a way into the oiled part of the system and there will be a leak path for the oil out of it's intended space and allow sea water into the oil space. I get the need for a new bearing, rough spots will turn into really bad spots. The sleeve idea was a great work around to make what you have do the job. If it were me, and the bearing was still pre charged or had been packed before installation, I would NOT lube it after re-installation.
thats what i was thinking. on cars they use bearings on things like a/c idler pulleys that never get lubed but yet they last 100k miles. The bearings are prelubed and have plastic covers over both sides of the bearing to keep the grease inside the bearing and there are some automotive driveshafts (slip yoke) that if you put too much grease inside it will damage them because of compression forces inside but fortunately the housing that bearing is in does not move.
Yep totally agree it was designed to be sealed as part of the overall design concept. Probably only meant to be lubricated during 5 yearly boat out overhaul. If you over lube after install it could cause other issues.
You are absolutly right over greasing can blow out the seals, also to much grease can over heat the bearing and cause spaulding. so be about 30% of capacity.

This shaft really seems to be a very good system. Not only for steel boats. It is a convincing and maintenance friendly system and you did right to stick to it! Very good idea to install the greasing nipple onto the bearing! Again an amazing video!

If you had put your bearings in a refrigerator for an hour or so they would have shrunk and dropped into the housing with little or no hammering.
Freezer section of the refrigerator.
@@jackpatteeuw9244 I've seen this done with dry ice to fit a 160mm stainless steel ring inside a housing for a jetski impeller. Also Ferrari uses it to fit valve seats in it engines.
@@VifferDude Depending on how much the interference fit is, a normal refrigerator freezer will shrink it enough.
That stuffing box is a beautiful piece of hardware. That was a good decision to keep it the way it was.

Great job!! You absolutely made the right decision to replace the bearing. And really nice job having that ring machined so you could use the new bearing you had.
If you could feel a “bump” in the old bearing it would have quickly disintegrated and failed. Leaving you in a dangerous situations. Failures always happen at the worst possible time.
The force is known as thrust. The big bearing you replaced is a double tapered roller bearing. It’s the bearing that takes the thrust of the prop and transfers it to the hull. And that load is why you needed to replace it that bearing. So again, great decision!

Oil inside shaft have to be ""Transmission oil". It's not 5w40!!!
It's another viscosity! Take an attention! and very important: bearings have to be NEW!

According to service manual, if you opened bearing module, U must be changed the АLL of the oil seals and bearings including any gaskets!

Bearing guy here: don't replace bearings unless you need to. Seals, yes. IDK anything about the oil just so long as it's compatible with the seals.
My Volvo sail drive transmission uses 15W 40 per the manufacturer recommendation, its quite common I believe.
You guys have a lot to be proud of, you are doing an amazing job. Your quality of workmanship is better than many professionals that I've encountered through the years. Also, I too think this is a better system.

The value of both forethought and preventive maintenance is rarely appreciated until unforeseen mitigating circumstances occur. I am a Drexel mechanical engineer. I worked as the maintenance engineer at a Ford assembly plant. I have sailed since 1957. I will not buy a vehicle newer than the fifth year it has been in use.
