    A detailed 3D animation of a boat's propeller shaft and stuffing box featuring a heavy duty dripless style stuffing box from R.E. Thomas Marine Hardware.
    If you're curious how a boat's shaft sealing system works, you'll appreciate this video. If you're looking to upgrade or replace a "face seal" dripless system or "lip seal" dripless shaft seal, you'll also want to watch this video.
    R.E. Thomas self-aligning shaft seals feature the same benefits as a modern dripless shaft seal, while giving boaters the peace of mind and proven reliability of a more traditional bronze stuffing box.
    There's no carbon face seal to shatter or crack. There's no rubber bellow to lose elasticity or compression. There's no nylon hose barb to snap off. There's no stainless rotor to slide back on the shaft.
    R.E. Thomas self-aligning shaft seals are much easier to repair in an emergency, and mariners have trusted the underlying technology for over a century.
    Manufactured in the U.S.A., R.E. Thomas SA-Series stuffing boxes offer an uncompromising combination of safety and performance that professional mariners have come to expect and trust.

    For those that think, 'wow, neat, gotta get one!'...heads-up, I just saw a 47-year old traditional shaft-seal / stuffing box (flax seal) that was STILL in operable shape on a sailboat with a 1-1/4" shaft...and had NEVER been serviced other than a new seal a couple of times! Yes, stuffing boxes 'drip water'...but are cheaply and easily fixed. A catastrophic bellows failure on a 'dripless seal' will sink your boat in an hour-or-two! Conventional stuffing boxes CANNOT 'catastrophically' fail...so a decent bilge pump in working conditions prevent OBVIOUS boat-loss. I wouldn't even CONSIDER this on a vessel less-than 60-ft and 450-hp, PERIOD! You've got a houseboat running twin 200-hp engines...stick with 'old school' and a redundant set of bilge pumps! If you do '20-year service' on those prop shafts, and polish them out (complete with buffing pads and jeweler's rouge), you'll have a VERY NICE (and relatively water-free) seal you don't really have to worry about.

      Bang on, this is something that larger vessels should be using.

      Is there a way to get 0% leakage like with a magnetic system like those used in chemical plants where the propeller is put into motion by a magnetic system?

    • @botno69420
      @botno69420 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AutodidactEngineerI'd imagine most anything possible, but the problem is cost-and-energy-efficiency. I'd also imagine your usual v-seals and such would be more than suffficient in private use with no or zero to none leaks, when aligned and maintained properly.

      Yea this product seems like an answer to a problem no one had. It has all the same issues of a stuffing box w requirement of high pressure water feed and shaft seals to prevent that high pressure water from blowing past your shaft and into the hull.

    Is this an improvement over the "Last Drop" system that came out about 20 years ago? Those seemed to work very well and gave long service and appears similar to your product.

      @@oilhand99 is this not use to vent as i've seen in other applications? Hence the line is place above the water line to drain over board?

    • @rethomasmarinehardware9290
      @rethomasmarinehardware9290  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnnyleonard4482 sorry for the late response. The "vent" application is more common on vessels that generally don't go faster than 10 knots. Vessels that come on plane (or semi-plane) should have some sort of forced water cooling so the seal doesn't become air bound.

    How many hours would such a seal last

    • @rethomasmarinehardware9290
      @rethomasmarinehardware9290  ปีที่แล้ว

      These are heavy duty commercial grade propeller shaft seals. There are many commercial fishing boats here in Maine with well over 15,000 hours. We recommend inspecting and replacing the packing material yearly, the rubber hose should be changed out every 5-7 years.

    • @rethomasmarinehardware9290
      @rethomasmarinehardware9290  ปีที่แล้ว

      The cooling water is usually fed by taping into the heat exchanger and/or the boat's raw water pump.

    Amazing invention! We still got a stuffing box and all associated fuckery u just added a higher pressure water feed? A feed that has to be sealed against a rotating shaft. Just like if u didnt have this bullshit at all.

    • @rethomasmarinehardware9290
      @rethomasmarinehardware9290  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      We highly recommend it for our self-aligning shaft system. For lower speed, lower horsepower boats (less than 10 knots or so) you "might" get away with capping off the water feed. At a minimum you should have the water connection "vented" to the outside of the hull to ensure air doesn't get trapped inside the stuffing box (airbound). Thank you!
