    The thing about cutting your hand or leg off to stop the spread when it comes to a virus is you have to cut it off quickly but when it comes to Dumbledore’s hand he can’t cut it off that would be instant death because Dumbledore’s hand was cursed with magic.
    Just like the unbreakable vow if Severus Snape tries to cut off his hand that will be instant death.

  • @Longshanks1690
    @Longshanks1690 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    The real reason is that the hand was purely symbolic and foreshadowing the fact that Dumbledore’s death was nigh, and inevitable. The dark corruption of the hand was to thematically represent that even the most powerful and wise among us are not immune to death’s keen sting.
    It also works as a metaphor for the moral ambiguity of Dumbledore, which would be delved much more in the following book, but the dark hand served as a physical reminder of the darkness within Dumbledore himself.
    Really there’s no reason why magic couldn’t cure his hand, it has no real limitation, but the metaphor was too good an opportunity to pass up. 😂

      Not sure I agree. If the infection was meant primarily as a metaphor and not a plot device it would have been much more impectful for him to wear a necklace infecting the area of his chest right above the heart. A festering wound where his heart should be would have been a stronger visual image than a withered hand if it was primarly written into the book as a standin for his inner darkness.

    I think that chopping the hand off wouldn't matter much. It may have been able to delay the curse a bit more, but what's done is done eventually it would have killed him. Like for god bids an aggressive cancer. If only Dumbledore didn't put the ring on, in the short term it would mean he would locate and kill any DE who dared to invade the castle if it happened. In the long term- No battle of Hogwarts because Dumbledore is there to protect it. If Voldemort would have continue the war, it would have been an attrition war most likely.

    Hmm you may be overthinking this one. Dumbledore never states that the dark magic afflicting his body is unknown and Snape doesn't either. They know it's deadly yes, but neither of them indicate it's magic that is new or unknown to them. I also think Dumbledore could have easily deceived the public into believing some freak accident unrelated to Voldemort took his hand, he is a charismatic and at times manuipulative character after all if. However there may have been one pwerson he couldn't have deceived so easily and that is Voldemort himself. Dumbledore didn't want the dark lord to find out he was hunting down Horcruxes under any circumstance. Had Voldemort gotten wind of Dumbledore losing his hand he may have pieced together the real reason why Dumbledore lost his hand. Even the slightest suspiscion that Dumbledore could have lost his hand as a result of touching the ring could have let Voldemort to check on it a lot sooner than he did in the books. As a result he would have been a lot more protective of the remaining horcruxes, making Harry's mission basically impossible. Dumbledore not amputating his limb was done to reduce the risk of Voldemort figuring out what was really going on with his horcruxes for as long as possible.

    I absolutely can't believe Dumbledore just forgot how the resurrection stone worked. Owner of a hollow, knows where the cloak is and coveted the stone the most. He didn't just forget how it worked either there was a spell on it to compel the holder to want to wear it or more likely the horcrux does and the curse then does it's job.

    So why I think cutting off limb would not do anything. If you consider for a moment that magic is a power inside witches and wizards, which is the reason that a lot of them have longer lifespans. And their wands channel their own magic through them and out into the world. Then a curse that spreads using the hosts own magic lifeforce to propagate (so to speak) would render cutting off a limb useless. The only thing one can do is find a way to slow its progression and contain it as best you can.
    My guess the reason Dumbledore forgot he was holding a Horcrux other than excitement, is that the defences around Horcruxes are pretty effective. Its possible the fragment of soul was whispering out to Dumbledore to put the ring on. Such as how the locket did to Trio with the mood swings or the Diary with Ginny. And he simply did it.
    Thats my take on it at any rate.
    Great Vid as always Dean! 👌

    I've read that the necrotic effect of the curse on Dumbledore's hand was similar to the bite of the Terciopelo (Bothrops asper) species of pit viper. Look at the pictures on the internet at your own risk; they're pretty gruesome.

  • @Delta_3
    @Delta_3 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    I think if the curse could have been halted by removing a hand dumbledoor he would have done, or more accurately I think Snape would have done. I also don't think that the creation of wormtails hand was a product of dark magic, my understanding is that dark magic is intended to harm people, the creation of a limb that was lost I would imagine the healers at St. Mungo's would be able to achieve (although in this case as with Moody's leg because the limb has been removed due to a curse it would not be possible)

    • @chesterdamolester6990
      @chesterdamolester6990 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Voldemort definitely used dark magic to create Wormtail's silver hand. This is evident when it strangled him to death.

    • @Delta_3
      @Delta_3 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@chesterdamolester6990 I'd always thought in my head that it was more a result of Harry saving wormtails life, and it being a reaction to him hesitating to kill Harry.
      Harry says (off the top of my head) "I saved your life, you owe me" then worm tail hesitates and his hand reacts to save Harry from him as I'd interpreted the passage.
      Although that being said I wouldn't put it past Voldemort to put a caveat on the hand to prevent wormtail from betraying him, like he betrayed the potters.

    Excellent video. I always wondered why Dumbledore didn't just cut his hand off. I also wondered why Voldemort didn't use the ring to speak with Salazar. Like you mentioned in another video, if Voldemort didn't see it as useful it didn't interest him. When you look back Voldemort was great but made crucial mistakes. Keep producing great videos my friend :)

    Here is irony in snape's predicament: Most of people who knew snape hated him because they saw him as evil but deep inside he was in constant pain after lily was killed not to mention after realization harry will have to die too. He faught with himself deep inside so Voldemort doean't pick up on Snape's betrayal. Snape was actualy good guy in the story end years later after lily and james married and had a son he never stoped loving her. Snape's seemingly cold demeanor hides horrible pain he's been enduring after lilly's death. If i were to guess Snape's actions while voldemort's deatheathers occupied hogwarts prevented deatheaters from slaughtering all the students aside from slitheryns.

    @Larka661 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It was a curse that Dumbledore couldn't break, Snape slowed its process down. But it couldn't be broken, which is why Dumbledore explained to Snape that he had to kill him to gain Voldemort's total trust, because Snape was the last defense for Harry.

  • @gullinvarg

    Another thought from other works of fiction (I can't remember which right now), perhaps curses work at a level other than the physical body. That is, maybe Dumbledore's hand would always be connected to him magically regardless of whether it was physically attached to his body. In that case the curse might still spread because while it acted like an infection in effect it wasn't one.
    Actually, it would be ironic if Dumbledore would have had to perform something like the horcrux spell to split his hand off magically.

    I think ultimately Dumbledore wanted out, wanted to die. He was tired and consumed by guilt. He didn't resist the temptation to wear the ring, so he considered that he deserved to die. He tells Harry more than once that, between the two, he (Harry) is the better man, because Harry has never yeald to the tempation of power, while Dumbledore, like Snape, ALWAYS.

  • @timgravierjr.4241

    Needless were none of the actions of Dumbledore. Every word, every thought, every thing about Dumbledore had multiple consequences, good or bad, and Dumbledore knew of most, if not all, of them. I suspect he had mastered the art of turning time, so i suspect he explored many outcomes of his decisions before making them. I do NOT believe his putting on the ring was a moment of weakness, as is publicly believed. I suspect it was a calculated decision, as was the decision to blame it on a "momentary lapse of reason".

    Don't count The walking Dead in this because of the fact that in the show it says that they have the disease already everyone has the zombie DNA in them it's just waiting to activate you cannot count the ring as the same as The walking Dead unless you've seen it and then just misunderstood the entire series that tells you straight up that everybody has it

If Dumbledore was so concerned with the possible drama caused by cutting off his hand, don't you think that the alternative solution, which is being murdered by one of Voldemort's death eaters, i.e. Snape, who was a traitor in everyone's eyes because only Dumbledore knew the truth, wouldn't be more dramatic and fear-inducing?
