Everyone should make more space movies, but also yes. The Martian is the single best hard scifi ever made, both on the actual scientific accuracy and really well written story. So well written that I actually recommend reading the book after watching the movie. The movie is very faithful to the book, but you get much more story by reading it. (Okay okay, letting loose the inner fanboy, I can straight up recommend reading all of Andy Weir's production, although the first one, The Martian, is the best.)
Interstellar is also a must. The Contact is one of my eternal favourites, though it's not as popular as those other two. It's about space, although the characters are on Earth surface, doing radio astronomy.

Out of the 2010’s decade, this movie won the most Oscars with SEVEN. It won Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects, and of course Best Director. ❤️ Three additional nominations for Best Production Design (lost to The Great Gatsby), Best Leading Actress (lost to Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine) and Best Picture (lost to 12 Years a Slave). This movie is so freaking good. ❤️❤️❤️

I honestly feel like THIS was the performance that Sandra Bullock should've gotten her Oscar for. Like, she's perfectly fine in The Blindside, but I feel like this character and this story really lets her show her full range of depth and talent. And she's onscreen for pretty much the entire movie, start to finish, so the story rises and falls on her shoulders.

💯. This was a freaking hard movie to make - watch some of the BTS videos on some of the insane ways they had to shoot it. And from what I vaguely remember reading, Sandra Bullock didn’t want to do it, and kind of had to be nagged into the role.

12:02 Apparently you would remain conscious for about 30 seconds, and you could still be resuscitated after another 30 or so. It would be a combination of the lack of oxygen, the low pressure, and - if you're outside - the *heat* (from direct exposure to the Sun's light) that would get you. Not a good way to go.

Wonderful film. Sandra Bullock isn't exactly my favorite actress, but when she does turn in a great performance, SHE KNOCKS IT OUT OF THE PARK.
My first time with "Gravity" was when it was screened at the Toronto Festival in 3D. The immersion in the 3D experience was something Alfonso Cuaron used as part of the storytelling, which (it likely goes without saying) I appreciate more compared to when studios convert a film to 3D as an afterthought.

The fetal position part in the space station hints at a larger theme of life in the movie. In the end it's very prominent where she comes out of the water and learns to walk, the way life evolved. I don't really know what it all means though I haven't seen this movie in a long time.

Hey, thank you for this! I love this movie. I mean, "What's the point if we don't try?" It's just such a great line. One of which I often remind myself.
However, was it just me, or did anyone else feel like the editor's notes were more mean-spirited than before? Didn't really care for that. I'm not here to make fun of Ange, or of anyone else for that matter. She reminds me of myself, and these kinds of videos are the closest thing to getting to experience my favourite movies anew. It means a lot to me. Just saying.
Anyway, it was still a lovely time! Thank you

@@Nyhde Interesting. It does say "Edited by Rees." Thanks for the info and your opinion. I still think these are Ange's thoughts and her idea to add the comments. For example, as I type this I see a thumbnail for her Return of the Jedi review and it says "finally cultured." Now if Ange wanted that there, it's a silly self-deprecating joke. If somebody else put that there without her knowledge, that's cruel. I really think these are Ange's own thoughts and comments and I'm sorry if the tone bothers you because I think we can both agree she's a joy to watch.

If anyone is curious the faces were filmed with the actors in a small set surrounded by lights that would project the correct direction of the light for the shot onto them and then they are comped into the shot. Thats why the light is so good while they’re spinning around all over the place.

Fun fact : In June 2011, the International Space Station was on a collision course with pieces of space debris. Astronaut Ron Garan and his crew had to quickly retreat to the lower Soyuz rescue capsule and were ordered to leave the spacecraft immediately in the event of a collision, something that had only happened once before in the history of orbital travel. Fortunately, the debris narrowly missed the station, but in the event of a collision the entire station would have been destroyed, according to calculations. Interestingly enough, the film was not inspired by this event, as it was filmed from 14 May to 6 July 2011, parallel to this incident 🤗

Suffocate, bloodshot eye, then dead. Since the differential pressure is abrupt from 1atm to 0. Just like when you deep dive, you get compression sickness. Even with dive you need to stay at certain depth for quite a while. With space, it is quicker.... dead. Also, the air in your body will try to get out of any orifice and pore.....since the law of universe is entropy, the equalise to your surrounding... painful, suffocating death. the end 😅🙃😇😵💀👻

Someone in testing was introduced to vacuum by accident, the last thing they noticed was the saliva in their mouth boiling before they rapidly lost consciousness. Contrary to most depictions you wouldnt feel cold even in the shade unless you were being cooled by a rush of air out of a smallish hole or some such. Once the atmosphere has gone there is nothing to strip heat away from you, you only radiate heat which is a much slower process. Your body would therefore spend a good long time inflating a pretty crazy amount like a marshmallow in a vacuum chamber, but thats not as cinematic as just showing a frozen corpse.

I love this movie! Also: there is a 3D version of it! I'm saying this because there was this one time when I had just bought my first VR headset and thought to myself: 'watching this in 3D with a VR headset is probably really cool and immersive!" - So, if you ever want to make yourself really, *really* sick.....

If there's no oxygen in the space, then they should bring a CD with the music made by Jean-Michel Jarre.

I would've seen this movie a dozen times in the theater. Only saw it once, unfortunately (and bought the DVD as fast as I could). I had a smile from ear to ear and I was shaking at the end. I downloaded the soundtrack as soon as I got home. I couldn't shut up about this movie for weeks. The last 10 minutes with the visuals, the hope, and the music: it made my soul want to shout.
I don't recall feeling such a roller-coaster of emotions and visuals combined in the theater ever til then (and haven't since, either).

This movie was so good but was immediately overshadowed by Interstellar, I remember seeing this in theaters but remembered zero of the plot

I am the opposite. I have seen this movie a lot. I have only seen Interstellar once in theaters. The ending of that movie sucked harder then the Singularity that they orbited.

most cg acting is still done with the full body even though they might throw away everything but the facial expressions. The rest is either mocap or hand animated, often taking the filmed movement as a reference

7:00 Yes, earth looks very blue from above, but I think with less teal.
What they changed most however is the haze. You only get such a great look if you look straight downward. If you angle towards the horizon, it quickly becomes misty and colourless in reality. They chose to ignore that little fact for sake of prettiness.

I really love Space, I used to fall asleep watching the international space station 24/7 stream so you know I've seen this movie once or twice, it's soooo goooood.
Oh, a no suit death in space via V-Sauce. If you went into space it would take 45 seconds to die as the vacuum sucks out all of your fluids starting with your eyes, this will be painful and you will feel all 45 seconds.
