From what I understand Danny was having a hard time with alcoholism at the beginning of the project and it was difficult for them to get through songs. Part way through the project Danny was sober and was able to deliver much better (this is at least what I heard from one of Dannys podcasts). The songs definitely reflect that imo, and its cool they left the songs as they were rather than re-did them after Danny stopped drinking.
Or maybe I am wrong and its the opposite way around and all the best songs were the ones where he was drunk xD
Either way, I hope Danny is doing much better than the way he described himself to be

Yeah I don't really get why one would watch a rip on TH-cam and then complain about the mixing. I was also disappointed by lean beef patty when it was released, but the album version on Spotify fixed any issues I had with it.
I actually find myself really enjoying the muddy mixes on this project. It feels like a revival of DIY in that they are less focused on the studio level mix, and more into focusing on the creativity and heart of the music. I also will never pass up an excuse to focus on Jpegmafias revolutionary production. I also want to throw in that while some songs are absolutely imbalanced in terms of danny and peggys verse lengths, but i genuinely appreciate when artists have the maturity to step back and let their collaborator take the forefront on a song that they feel that person rocks more than they would.

Pinning the shoddy mixes on a "DIY aesthetic" doesn't really erase them for me. Both of these artists are extremely detail-oriented, which, for me, pushes it from "potentiality intentional" to just plain weird.
Edit: I did really enjoy this album tho, definitely an AOTY contender for me right now.

it’s just inconsistent though. it sounds like half of the songs were recorded completely separately (and far worse) and than others. I think once the hype dies down people will be far more open with the albums downsides.

Poet nerd conspiracy theory: this album’s mixing and production are completely intentional. And they’re done that way to actually highlight and elevate Danny, who Peggy is pretty open about deeply admiring as an artist. The mixing makes you keep seeking out Danny’s vocals. I remember being super off-put by them the first time I heard this album, especially for the first few songs. By the middle of the album Danny’s voice is what I was always listening for! I feel like on almost every beat, Peggy figures out a way to draw you in to everything Danny is saying, and creating moments of frustration with the mix so you wanna hear him again and again. Which I was doing completely by “Steppa Pig.” And then Kingdom Heart Key is just this beautiful sonic ritual where two older gens of rappers hold up this young artist to shine light on his taken. I kept replaying this song to hear redveil. Anyway, that’s my goofy, artsy theory ✌🏼

Just heard this album. I'm with Brad, this is awesome. I don't have a ton of expereince with Brown or JPEG, but Scaring The Hoes is such a unique, versatile, crazy project that does so many things and succeeds at all of them, supported by stellar production, great vocals, and unique lyrics. My personal favorite tracks are Lean Beef Patty, Fentanyl Tester, Garbage Pale Kids, and Jack Harlow Combo Meal.
Also, Hotel Ugly just released their new album, Ugly Duck. Check it out, it's really cool!
Deep dive into both Peggy and Danny, they are well worth it, and if you want to get into the deeper cuts with Peggy check out the Devon Hendryx alias stuff from before JPEGMAFIA, my guy kinda literally invented Vaporwave a little bit on the Ghost Pop Tape, it was a few years before any of the big “first example” names and before the genre was named too. Acid-drenched plunderphonics. So good.

I think Danny's inclusion was good but I really wanna see a Denzel Curry + JPEG project. I feel like Denzel's rapping would be so fun over JPEG's mixing. I mean they could even do some triple threat and throw JID in there that would be too good tho.

I like how Peggy takes production styles from all of his past 3 albums, you can hear the instrumentation from LP! On many songs and other songs have the melodies from all my heroes are cornballs, and a lot of the songs are just as experimental in their sound as veteran. I think this was intentional as he also brought back the producer tag from veteran and the “I like jpegs” thing from cornballs. You can totally listen to every beat and locate exactly which Peggy album or even song it has the same style and instrumentation as.

The mix on this record isn't to be pushed aside. This album is undeniably amazing, but a mix this spotty coming from two extremely detail-oriented artists such as Peggy and Danny is just plain weird.

This kind of reminds me of IGN reviewing the latest Call of Duty or Mario game where they just endlessly point out its flaws then give it a 9.0 and say “it has a little bit of something for everyone”

the main issue i have with this album is how little it feels like a collab. danny never returns for a second verse and there's never a back and forth. It almost feels like a jpegmafia album with posthumous danny brown features

For me Lean Beef Patty was perfect as a lead single, my expectations were sky high and it basically tempered them, especially with Danny kinda taking a back seat in the project overall which is what we heard on LBP. Not saying I'm disappointed or this is the best they could've done, but it's more of a vibe than some huge groundbreaking collab.
This album is ridiculously good. It’s like ADHD-core but so well put together. The fact that a song will switch beats like six times but they all work together is just really enjoyable and keeps you interested waiting for what’ll happen next

“The jack harlow chicken” and the “bitch like the army” line among others just gave me real laugh out loud moments at my first listen! Just that alone is hard to do and deserves some credit. Balls to the walls album, not too familiar with either Jpeg or Danny but enjoyed this a lot!

important to mention is that jpegmafia produced this with an SP404 rather than a DAW. obviously with the magic of modern sampling there's a lot he can do, but the fact that he was using production tools from 2005 shows how insane this album is

Was so happy to see this project drop, JPEGMAFIA is always a joy to hear and Danny Brown is so versatile and skilled. Really loved this album, Peggy's production keeps getting more insane and impressive. Crazy, fun, absurd, already on repeat
i think retrospectively, had this album not had danny on it, it would've suffered for that. regardless of mixing or placement, danny really is the cherry on top of the album and some of the top moments are his moments, like Orange Juice Jones, God Loves You and the Outro song
I completely agree with your take about how this sounds like a fucked up 80s movie. Some of the tracks here (RTJ, WYGYCF?, etc.) sound like something straight out of pulp fiction. Makes me picture Peggy and Danny in the roles of John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson.
Much of this was done on a 404, which apparently compresses vocals into the rest of the mix aggressively. That said, this is gonna be hard to top for aoty for me.

"Where the auto tune at" is meant to be sarcastic. The whole concept of the song is how they keep making songs that are "Scaring the Hoes". So in line with that concept, Danny Brown is calling out main stream cliche tropes, such as auto-tune. He's saying it as if he's a main stream rapper, "yo, where the auto-tune at?"

At first I was gonna say something about Brad not listening to the album on spotify and that the youtube version was gonna ruin it, but nah just some minor mixing differences. Fantastic album

Cosmic brain moment for me right now:
This album almost acts as Peggy and Danny’s answer (in spirit, not in any direct way, just follow with my logic here) to Open Mike Eagle’s ‘Component System With the Auto Reverse’; *_pure, raw, unfiltered “mixtape made with your best friend(s) and colleague(s)” energy._* It’s that same concept but coming from different perspectives, eras and, for lack of better phrasing, regions. The OME record was very much a laid back, just-put-on-that-beat-and-spit celebration and send-up of his history with local rap scenes like Project Blowed, his involvement in Hellfyre Club (which I urge everyone to look at if you like OME, Milo or Busdriver) and the particular era and the experience of it, while ‘Scaring the Hoes’ is that for “weird, crazy” internet rappers like Peggy and Danny that came up doing purely their own thing and forging their own niche in the game by catching so much attention and lasting audience retention for how creative and out there they are during what kinda feels like the absolute _height_ of the internet’s Wild West days of music.
It’s why I kinda “forgive” some of the flaws that I do agree are there and connect more with the tempo of the flows, the beats, the speedy and hectic jumps from idea to idea that build a kind of fun momentum, especially in the car.

My expectations were too high for them to be exceeded but I knew that going into it. I love this thing regardless but I should’ve had more realistic expectations
My favourite song on this album is Garbage Pale Kids, it just has the most Danny Brown 1-liners and I'm all here for it 😭 also the production goes hard & Peggy's flows are insane

also I'm sure Brad has realized already but I wouldn't review leaks since the streaming version has at least minor differences and better mixing 90% of the time

I'm at a solid 9, maybe 9.5. It's an amazing project. I don't think there is a single skip on the album for me, just nitpicks

Based on his complaints about LBP dude probably gonna be a little disappointed seeing as how most the album does feel like JPEG tracks with Danny as a guest rather than a two way 50/50 collab, Which I'm totally fine with tbh cause Peggy always kills it, But i guarantee Fantano will take issue with this, He's a huge JPEG fan but he's also a huge Danny fan as well and Danny's high pitched vocals sometimes not meshing together quite right on Peggy's production is gonna bother him. Overall I think he's gonna enjoy it but guarantee he's gonna nitpick the hell out of this thing lol
I was thinking about the Escaflowne op, especially the piano opening. That's the first Yoko Kanno that I heard. Then I heard this album and I was weirded out when I hear it being incorporated.

The production is the best part. Also you can't get mad at the mix, when it was produced on something that looks like a TI-84 Graphing Calculator.

Danny is my favorite rapper, so maybe I'm biased, but must say that I love how the songs give both these guys time to shine.
I did not understand Danny's "Eat that ass like Canibus" line before, but after looking it up, i have to inform you guys that this might be the funniest line ever written, and i urge you to look into that too :)
