I once had the good fortune to meet Ronnie in a pub in London. We chatted about the Stones for a while and he signed an autograph. A great bloke as well as a great guitar player.
Great to see and hear this, I’d always maintained that Ronnie’s bass playing on the first two Jeff Beck Group albums was his finest hour, but there’s no denying his individual approach and unique tone on guitar (esp with the Faces) which definitely deserves more attention. He earned his gig with the Stones, and when he played on ‘Its only rock n roll’ (title track only) he still had that distinctive biting Faces guitar tone.
@@bungle3912 I totally agree. Yes, I should have prefaced that with Mick was a much more technically proficient player than Ronnie or Keith, but they have that bare bones sloppy but not sloppy groove that makes the Stones the Stones. Cheers!
Love the focus on Ron Woods, he has a great style, especially through the stuff he did with Faces. A Wink is as good as a Nod to a blind horse is a great Album.
A Nod Is etc a classic album ; saddest part is they just didn't keep going, couldn't keep it together. But they all went on to bigger stuff, great players.
Terry Carthy It would have been difficult because Rod Stewart was going to have a solo career and the stature of the rest of the band was too great that they could not be just a backup band.
Wood's style, with the dissonant touches and percussive feel really gave the Faces ragged edge that suited them perfectly. That some of my favorite music. Nice lesson, thanks.

I feel he really dropped off after joining the stones and his personal style was buried being Keith's sidekick. PLEASE DO MORE ON RONNIE/FACES!

Everything you said, Jeff. Ronnie is one of those select guitarists that has an immediately identifiable tone and feel. A consummate player. So yes, keep delving and sharing.
Brilliant thanks - huge influence with the Faces. Power with great touch , with the boogie fills and huge slide chords. Saw Faces live in 1974 when Rod Stewart was in his prime - emerging superstar - but Ron Wood stole the show. Huge sound. Set the tone. Got the party started.
I LOVE Ron's intro to "Losing You" .... For years I have watched the old "Faces" live performance video here on U Tube and tried in vain to get it down the way he does it and he makes it look so easy.

You answered a lot of questions I had in this video alone and hope you will do a lot more. Thanks for doing this! - Jeff
You could do videos on his chord voicings for acoustic guitar and on his string bending for leads and how he adapts stuff from pedal steel. Ron Wood is like cartilage, nobody really raves about him but he always finds interesting ways to bring things together.
Very cool! I've always considered the Faces to be one of the greatest rock bands EVER and Woody's playing an integral part of that legendary sound. By the way the half step slide you demonstrated can also be done as a double stop bend.
I've been looking for some type of lesson on Woody's playing. He's a very underrated guitarist. Good rhythm guitar playing is also greatly underrated. Great stuff. Thanks.
Always been a fan of Ron, but really been getting back into the Faces the last few months, and such an underated band. Love Ron’s playing in the Faces and personally think he was much better than with the Stones. Find such a swagger and groove with Ron’s playing and just get a feeling an enjoyment and fun hearing him play. A truly underated guitarist and played some amazing songs
I saw The Stones many times starting in '81 which only got better through the years. A very interesting time was at a show in 2014 in Spain where I saw them reunite with Mick taylor. On Midnight Rambler everyone was fantastic, Taylor did something different from his 70's shows and was great, keith as always hammers the hell out of Rambler, Jagger on the harp was better than I'd ever seen him live getting close to his 69 through 73 performances, not fucking about but playing the hell out of the harp. However! The big surprsie was Ron Wood and not cause he hasn't always held his own in my opinion but because he dropped a bomb of a solo, it was very unique even for him and was not trying to be competitive but he just demonstrated what unusually great shit he could pull out of his hat and he did, not better than Taylor just brilliant right up there with him but doing his own thing showing that each player is a unique artist. I never saw such a brilliant colloboration of 3 distinct guitar players live in my life.
Very informative and interesting! Ronnie Wood is not only a fantastic guitarist he is reputedly a really nice guy, too (though I personally haven't had the pleasure). I like this video. No baloney, all substance, easy to understand. Good stuff!
He is really nice, I've never went out of my way to meet Musicians, I did Ron, I had bought a book of his artwork & went to a signing, very great, spent time & a guy behind me with a Polaroid let us get a picture together, with Jo. Thumbs up to Ron.
Great video. Always has been one of my favorite guitarists, especially Faces. Love to see you play songs like True Blue, Miss Judy's Farm (all the way through)...Great Ronnie sound!
Ron Wood was my influence as I was growing up learning to play guitar .I love his tone and his style .The Faces were a great Rock band and all five members added there own unique parts and made some great Albums ...My problem with Ronnie Wood is most people regard him as a Rolling Stone ...And he is ..But ..But I always think of him firstly as the brilliant and original guitarist in the Faces .....So the answer to your question is Yes ! I would love more Ron Wood guitar lessons from his Faces days .....I hope you read this as A Nods as good as a Wink to a blind Horse Regards Gilbert
Your right about him being tagged as only a Stone, many younger players haven't heard the Faces material & Ron solo work, try to find Ron's 1234 Album on CD, not out there, Gimme Some Neck is my Favorite. I think you could spend a hour easily on Ron's style.
I am just old enough to have already been familiar with his great Faces & Rod Stewart playing a few years before he officially joined the Rolling Stones. That Ampeg amp gritty tone was unique, but never heard with the Stones. Maybe what blended well with Rod's rough voice back then, doesn't go as well with Mick's voice or Keith's tone.
The way he handles lead and rhythm at the same time is really great. The Faces swaggered similar time the Stones and is likely why he fit into the Stones so well. That and he has amazing stage presence.
Great playing! Great video! Great subject! Playing rhythm guitar is a true art but to play it the way Ronnie Wood does is magical. Your playing is much easier on the ears than most youtube stuff, thank you!

Nailed it! Really informative and well explained. Love his tone and feel - Woody would have probably created a very close approximation of Mick Taylor's work had he been in the band when "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" was recorded (same tone, same embellishments on the first half of the song, especially the into itself).
Ronnie played (in my opinion) his finest recorded guitar solo on a little known (but great😎) stones song call "worried about you"...its on Tattoo you" ....he also played bass for the early Jeff Beck Group
I agree with you 100% abut that solo but it was actually played by the guitarist Wayne Perkins, not Woody. Perkins also played the solo on Hand Of Fate from the Black and Blue LP.
@@chilledmonkeebrains No, he was not. Most of the songs on ‘Tattoo You’ were actually older, unfinished tracks. For example, ‘Waiting On A Friend’ was started back in 1973 during the ‘Goats Head Soup’ sessions. ‘Worried About You’ was stared during the 1975 ’Black & Blue’ sessions. After Mick Taylor left, the Stones were auditioning new guitarists while recording ‘Black & Blue’. A great breakdown of Ron's style. Checkout a band called the birds with a young Ron Wood in the ranks recording for decca. One great track is leaving here check out the birds version and then catch the motor head version
Gr8 Bass player too & uses open tunings but a fabulous artist too .. his paintings & sketches .. I sat in a bar with a crowd of folk around him & he was as unobtrusive & not a rock star as anybody I've ever met .. just another guy in the bar & only the muso's around knew who he was .. all around a cool guy .
I call him RON. FIRST i would recommend Ron's first band The Birds, (1964-66) who sound as explosive as the early Who, with punkier vocals. Check out "A Collector's Guide to Rare English Birds", which collects all their singles and plenty of unreleased gems. The Birds led Jeff Beck to ask Rw to form the JB Group, originanally as guitarist - when ex Bird bassist Kim Gardner split Ron switched to bass and the 2 JBG albums Hugely influenced the early Led Zeppelin records, musically and even on term of engineering/mix etc. Ron & Rod were then in Faces of course - check out how expressive, warm, delicate and raunchy, loose and tight Ron's work is on say "Long Player", the layered accoustics, lead electric, pedal steel, slide work (& great songwriting) blend together to create the groups fully accomplished musical personality, something technique alone cannot achieve. Another thing evident in rw's playing is wit ('Cut Across Shorty', 'Too Bad' 'Its All Over now'). Too bad indeed his songwriting skill is not utilized more in the Stones. My Favorite Stones RW lps are SOME GIRLS, EMOTIONAL RESCUE, & BRIDGES TO BABYLON. As for his solo work NOW LOOK & NOT FOR BEGINNERS are my faves. And for Faces fans check out the Wood/RONNIE LANE soundtrack MAHONEY'S LAST STAND, which features the other Faces and some terrific songs ('Just For A Moment', 'Mona the Blues').....thanks all for the great comments!
Great Video... i have always enjoyed Ron's vibe ( he also wrote one of the best autobiographies ever) taking you up on your suggestion and i would love to see more Ron! I also think someone who channels Ron and i love his vibe is Rich Robinson. Thanks man

Fantastic! I'm no expert, a mere plonker at best, but an aficionado of those who can play nonetheless. You made it easy to hear and see Mr. Wood's techniques in your playing. More, please!
I would love a feature about Ronnie's lead playing which is has this great feel. Particularly the way he plays on the "Still Life" Stones-album from 1981 got me hooked.
Listen to Ronnie's solo on Angie from the live bootlegs Stones album to really get into Ronnie Wood's grooves. And, his guitar on Brown Sugar in that Love You Live album is still among the most appropriate solo to the song guitar playing of all time.
How or What Distortion Was Ron Using , It Is Or Was Very Unique To Him . Thank You For Getting It Right . The song Cindy Incidentally Is One Of my Favourites , He usually uses a 58 Stratocaster
Favorite Ron Wood guitar riff "Stay with me" by the Faces. One of the best guitar intro's.
You mean I'm losing you....👌👌👌
Yeah that ones awesome but imo its Ian McLagan's piano part that really takes that song over the top!

@Ronnie Wood you're the man Ronnie
Gr8 Bass player too & uses open tunings but a fabulous artist too .. his paintings & sketches .. I sat in a bar with a crowd of folk around him & he was as unobtrusive & not a rock star as anybody I've ever met .. just another guy in the bar & only the muso's around knew who he was .. all around a cool guy .
I'd love more on Ronnie Wood
Great tone and lesson. Ronnie’s “lead rhythm” with Faces was unique.
Great breakdown Jeff you nailed it, It's no coincidence that the lions share of Rod Stewart's best songs had Ronnie Wood playing on them......
Awesome video, nailed the feel and tone of Woddie, great job!

Lovely tone
Thanks Jeff. Would love to see more demos of Ronnie, as well as Keith too.
Would love a lesson on Ron's power slide technique! Probably my favorite slide player of all time.
Excellent breakdown of Rons playing ,moore please.
So minimalist, never tempted to fill where it don’t need filling and you got to appreciate the sounds of the rest of the Faces , Ron’s a class player
More Ron Wood or videos by this guy. This moved along better than a lot of reverb vids like this
Well done. More on Ron.
