I loved this song immediately when I first heard it. It has an obvious Stonsey-ness to it. But I didn't know it was Ron Wood at the time. I found out a few years later, even though I was already a Stones fan. And no wonder. Ronnie was wanting into the Stones (as if that's a reasonable goal!). But THIS song cemented his spot, methinks.

Yo this song is sooo out there and you are right that is one of the greatest songs of all time and just as fresh I finally got that found the sound on my amp and have been killing it after watching you.
This is quite interesting. Some years ago, Paul Warren (former guitarist for Rod Stewart) described for me how he plays this tune in concert and he told me to just drop the A5 to G and play it there, however I've always kept playing it in Standard tuning for expediency and practical reasons, AND cuz I felt I did it justice at least as well as Drop G. Now that I hear this, I'm have to reconsider my approach because this kind of nails it on a certain level. Kudos man. Glad I've stayed on your email list!
Gotta say thanks 110%..easily one of best riffs EVER..I'm only playing guitar a year have experimented a lot with open G and Keefs style but this in Open E makes me feel like a bloody rock God even though I'm real beginner what an awesome tone first time I've played something at 12th fret and beyond and not sounded like a screaming cat in a washing drier
Man, this is good. I FINALLY get to see how it's truly played. I've played it with the E on the 4th fret and of course the 7th fret but never open tuning. I feel foolish. Excellent lesson. I never noticed it before but in the outro I hear the opening chords of Pool Hall Richard.
Great job. I really enjoyed your lesson. I agree with you, keyboards would have been great. The keyboard break in the song and Woods style of rhythm are what drew me to this back in the early to mid 70's. I saw Rod live in Cleveland at Richfield Coliseum. Hot Legs, Maggie Mae, and Stay with me, my favorites. Thanks again.
So good! What a great selection to work on, and you killed it as usual… I always thought there was more than one guitar in the intro, as well. Guess that’s why I never came close to even trying to learn this. But now you’re giving me hope! Thanks!
Many years ago (pre internet) when I started learning guitar I just used chord charts from books. For the normal E shaped bar chord I didn't know I was supposed to bar the entire fret with one finger so I hooked my thumb over the top to grab the 6h string. Hendrix also did that. Worst thing I did tho was I reversed my pinky and ring finger from what I should have done and I put my pinky on top (the 5th string). I eventually learned how to bar with my index finger but I have never undone the reversal of the ring and pinky fingers. BTW I have small hands but reaching over the top was never and issue for me. You just have to rotate your wrist above center line of the neck. Anyhow, great lesson again. You remain the top of the food chain when it comes to these lessons. You set the bench mark.
Excellent! Always wanted to learn this but I never think about it until I hear it on the radio, which is rarely. I think this is the best riff Ronnie Wood has ever written. Thanks for putting it out there for us!
I totally agree with everything you say. Fabulous band fantastic song. Red lips hair and fingernails I guess you’re a big old Jezebel was my favourite pick up line at discos back in the day. Didn’t work for me as well as it did for Rod Great lesson by the way Got to mention Steve Marriott original front man of the small faces. I was born in 55 and definitely lived through the best rock n roll years there will ever be
My favorite guitar lead in . Ron wasn't a soloist in the way Beck or Clapton was but came up with the best chordal type fills. Richards or Johnny Marr were great at that too
Just a suggestion- I use the slide on my pinky, which allows less cramping of the fingers, as well as being able to transition from slide to standard picking.
Andy that is bye a long way, for me, the most satisfying lesson I've watched and practiced with so far. I'm very new to electric guitar playing and so it is great to "give it the beans". Very much appreciate your shared knowledge and hard work making these videos. I'll definitely grab the wife's credit card to make a donation. That Open E tuning sounds amazing. Fantastic. Extremely thorough knowledge, coupled with very accessible teaching style. Also zero self aggrandizement and ego. Best tutorial ever! Closely followed by by Alex Leifson teaching us how to play Tom Sawyer Though LOL
Back again. This is an excellent tutorial, totally perfect. As a guitarist playing since the seventies, and used to playing note for note and figuring out songs, this is a still totally excellent. Will just mention, I’m struggling with the very first part of the intro, when you have the first three notes, and then hit the low E twice, there is the slightest hesitation there that to me really takes it to another level. I’m hitting it right in a beat, and then when I try to hesitate, it’s too late. I notice you do it perfectly when played at speed, but slowed down I am not sure but it seems you hit the beat like I am. Oh well, Just gotta work in it to nail it, as you do. Also the Rythm part in the verses. Thanks for pointing out how much is going on there, the variations that come and go. I was working off a live version if the song, which they played more straightforward, but just bought the original and can clearly hear a lot more activity as you showed. Trying to figure out if there is a “sense” to it or if it is just random when they play more straight or add beats and notes from the normal shuffle style. As we get older, at least me, sometimes we gloss over the small details (I notice band mates do this too) in the rythm section. I think a lot of times we listen to a round of the verse and Think “ok that’s the verse part” and don’t realize the cool things they do to make it more interesting. Your videos are just perfect for someone that can already play, and I LOVE that you often also offer a demo version to play along with! Hope you keep churning them out! Thank you!
Great lesson! My tablature books were not even close. Your lessons are the best! Have you ever thought about teaching the song "I'm Losing You" by Rod? One of my favorites.
Awesome. So you've recently done some Stones, link that up with Ron Wood to get to the Faces. And Ron Wood would take you back to the Jeff Beck Group. How about something off the Truth album? "I Ain't Superstitious" perhaps?

I agree..prob one of the best opening riffs to a rock song..so gruff and chunky..damn, just played it for the past 2 hours..lol. Also and along the same lines technique wise is the Faces version of I know I'm losing you..Ronnie using a similar pull off technique..brilliant. And yes, darn him for having such big hands..lol. Btw, thanks for the lesson..one of your better ones 👍
Woodie was always about feel. What a great tune by a great Band. I wish they had been around longer but Rod needed to spread his wings. Ronnie landed his best gig ever. The Stones.
Hey Andy Since we are in the 70's what do you think about something from Frampton Comes Alive. I was thinking "I'll Give You"Money I think the solos in that song would be cool to learn. Everybody had that album in my day and most of the other songs have already been covered elsewhere but have never seen that one. Anyway love your lessons, try to contribute every time I see a song I want to learn whether I actually learn it or not is an entirely different story, really enjoy watching you play. Thanks
Absolutely brilliant, thanks for posting this, something to have a go at over the next few days, I've used Open G for Stones stuff but didn't realise this was in open E - Fab.........

Sir, you are effortlessly cool.
Woodie was always about feel. What a great tune by a great Band. I wish they had been around longer but Rod needed to spread his wings. Ronnie landed his best gig ever. The Stones.
Thank-you, much appreciated
Another great lesson! Thank you!
Thank you so much - perfect!
Hey Andy
Since we are in the 70's what do you think about something from Frampton Comes Alive.
I was thinking "I'll Give You"Money
I think the solos in that song would be cool to learn.
John Jackson Faces not Stones.
My favourite song of theirs is (I know) I`m Losing You. Check out the live version with the Kenney Jones drum solo.
Awesome tutorial dude
Love it, added to the must do list, thanks
