I sincerely hope your podcast will be successful. I love the way you think. I as a very analytically, and philosophically thinking person, appreciate your thoughts. Its especially interesting and enjoyable to listen to when you're talking about one of my passions- Esports!
Was really hyped to see Rapha on this, hope you'll do more quake players even if Rapha is one of the most well spoken ones. The only thing I want to add is that I think you should maybe let the quests delve into tangents or steer them deeper into an off-topic discussion that could be interesting rather than reeling it back in before you get there, because that is how some of the best discussions happen. I appreciate the structure but if you learn how to let discussions go off-topic when the opportunity arises it will create a better discussion overall as long as you remember to reel it back in at some point before it goes too far off. Otherwise I think you're doing a really solid job.
First one of these I've listened to, very interesting and I love the format. Suggestion though since you talked about the possibility of doing followup episodes in the future, call them "rematch" or "overtime" episodes.
you should absolutely put links to the alternative podcast locations into the video decription. And soundcloud or some straight .mp3 download link would be appreciated.
Checked, but somehow the patreon link isn't clickable... Maybe a code error? I can't click on it directly and have to copy paste... using newest chrome. The RSS link works fine.
As a player who started playing Quake Live like 4-5 years ago (on the 10 minute format), I wouldn't have stuck around this long if it weren't for the 10 minute duel system. When you start off as a beginner in Quake Live, you just go 10 minutes dying over and over. But, at that point you realize the truth about the game, and you have to work with what is given to you. Which is practically nothing. The game balance was a huge part of it, it was a real puzzle trying to climb up through the ranks as a new player. Quake Live is such an unbalanced game that it forces players to really strategize around the game balance itself. If it weren't for that, the game would be relatively boring. You know, some people just like climbing mountains, others like walking down them. The enjoyment I have was the thrill of learning new things and applying them to see how much better I would play afterwards. I was practicing because it felt like there would be a certain skill level that I would reach one day that the game would become more obvious to me and I would play it almost because I just knew how to win, and for the most part I got to that point, I just have a few barriers that I have found to be very challenging to overcome. I just feel like without the resistance of the unbalanced gameplay, the payoff for my work and effort is almost 1% of what I expected. My biggest complaint is that new comers don't have to climb that HUGE mountain that I had to climb to get to my current rank (top 40 NA). They can just play the way they want and they're rewarded for it. There is no obstacle to really overcome now. They pretty much removed it, so yeah... that is why Duel isn't as great in QC. QC duel is pretty much the first minute of a QL match played over and over again for up to 5 rounds.
The biggest / decider in quake is dodging. Somehow people can't put their finger on it and realize this, not even the super good players who are super good at dodging too. When I went from playing with bots and couple of friends on IPX to playing on net with more and more hardcore players, the revelation hit me after a while I that I'm starting to lose more because these people are exponentially more and more hard to hit. I already dealt with very good aim, but this was way harder to cope with. Laos when I managed to git gud enough to have good matches with some of the best back then, when I came back to play my buddies, they felt so easy to hit as if they were standing still...and I could never-ever find a way explain what was the difference they all tried to be as random and annoying as possible.
Dodging is HUGE when two players are going all in for map control in one single fight, but when you're playing duel... that wont get you to victory alone. Believe me, I have had my focus on dodging for years mainly because I am no aim expert. I feel like where there is good dodging, there is more room for error and you get more chances to shoot back. Without it, you die really quickly. But overall, you can actually almost entirely avoid that scenario with positioning. Ideally, that is what makes Rapha who he is. He avoids scenarios that put him under that much pressure when he could have done something far less risky. He mentioned that he sets up a higher volume of engagements rather than one huge engagement, this allows him to survey the situation easier and control the results with the use of falling back onto hp bubbles and armor pickups. So you really don't have to do as much dodging unless you're in aim battles, or you've taken a fight that is very risky.
Rapha is one the most thoughtful/well-spoken players in all of esports. It's always a pleasure hearing his insights. Thanks for the interview!
this is so valuable
Thank you ddk for the awesome interview. It's a totally different approach to thoorins style. Request for more quake interviews!

This is AWESOME, please keep making these videos! You are an excellent interviewer, on par or even better than the more well-known/popular ones.

The audio on this video is quite quiet. I live the content, I just had to boost my mixer pretty far beyond normal for my setup with youtube.
you should absolutely put links to the alternative podcast locations into the video decription. And soundcloud or some straight .mp3 download link would be appreciated.
Good interview for next one put audio levels higher this one is very quiet
Google Play Music app cannot find you under podcasts
would love to have this podcast on Google play music
You should be able to find it on there!
i want to know which is rapha favourite map and why. And opposite. Which one is worst and why
Daniel. You HAVE to put your patreon link in every video description. That's where i look for it all the time when someone mentions it.
Gotcha, will go and edit all the descriptions to include rss, patreon, direct download, etc! thanks
Checked, but somehow the patreon link isn't clickable... Maybe a code error? I can't click on it directly and have to copy paste... using newest chrome. The RSS link works fine.
Will you ever bring Bardolph with you to cast a quake match?
I have been hoping for that for so long, I think it would be disastrous as he thrives on downtime in matches but I would love it
Yes! I just want the epic nonsense

thanks for this sentence, i will remember that one!
