Harry Styles wasn’t that bad, but the actor who played Patrick really was the highlight of their relationship. Styles has potential as an actor though.

My mate saw Dunkirk in cinemas. Apparently there were a load of young girls in there who would go mad every time Harry was on screen.

The comparison to David Bowie is very interesting, because you can really see how much better Bowie handled the transition into film acting. First of all, Bowie actually studied acting and worked hard at it, which I'm not convinced Styles has done at all. Second, in his first major role, "The Man Who Fell to Earth," he was pretty much playing himself (or, more accurately, the version of himself of that time), and a lot of his later roles play with his rock star persona. This policeman role just doesn't fit Styles, it's too ordinary and plain, it feels like he's putting on a costume. And lastly, Bowie didn't immediately thrust himself into mainstream movies, he did a lot of indie work which was, crucially, away from the spotlight. The whole media circus around "Don't Worry Darling," and this movie to a lesser extent, could seriously cripple any chance Harry Styles might have for a serious acting career.

Please, I don’t wanna see him playing himself. I can just go to his concert if I want that from him. We’ll see. But I feel like he won’t just stop here. This man has proved me wrong about his music career many times. And I’m sure he will do the same for his acting career.

@@Nokaejoong Agreed. He clearly wants to stretch his range as an actor and not just play off his singing career. Maybe he's guilty of 'running before he can walk' but he's only 28 so has plenty of time to develop his craft.

thank you for calling out the respectability politics in films like this. i saw brokeback mountain not long after it first came out, and it was one of the first mainstream exposures i had to queerness in the media. it's still one of my favorite movies to this day, and as a queer person, i'm glad that it exists. but that doesn't mean all queer media can or should be tragic in nature. especially considering the fact that straight audiences seem to only tolerate movies like this with two white cis men as the stars. it's very reminiscent of roland emmerich's stonewall in which he admitted to inventing a white cis character because he didn't think straight audiences could connect with the movie any other way (sidenote: thank you for not misgendering emma corrin). these days, period pieces like this seem to exist to assure the audience that they're "not that homophobic anymore." queer audiences deserve to have our stories told in all the thematic and social diversity in which they exist.

Styles seems like a really decent person, but it is frustrating - and a tad ironic given his persona - to see him getting thrust into these roles over much more talented actors who have spent years honing their craft.

I think he has a lot of potential because he’s very present and has so much charisma. I think he’s getting a bit too much flack from certain people, because he does quite well in some scenes and falls a bit flat in others. He just needs a bit more experience and training to get there 🙂

Yeah, I was trying to be measured, because I didn't want this to be a dunk fest. Just a classic case of "too much, too soon".

Great review Matthew! I wondered if the story was inspired by E.M. Forster's life - if anyone wants to know more about the true story, I would recommend Wendy Moffat's biography 'E.M. Forster: A New Life', which focuses on Forster's homosexuality.

But my god I didn't think they got this deep in real life.

It sounds like this story would have been better served as a Stage Play judging by your description of the Novel.
I'll stick with Andrew Haigh's Weekend instead.

I was debating whether to watch this movie & I guess I'll be watching with low expectations.
ALSO: I saw Bros as soon as possible in the cinema & I definitely agree that it's a step forward in queer representation.

We showed this film at the cinema I work at, and I was sure that we would be getting the Harry Styles fangirl crowd for the movie, but uh...nope. Almost no one came to see it, and it was gone after about two weeks.
I think, and this is just a theory, that the R rating may have blunted the audience somewhat, as we did have a handful of teenagers trying to come see it but we're unable to because of our policies on R-rated movies.

Just watched this movie, great review. I hate that the wife is just collateral damage. I wish she had left him and found someone fully devoted to her. That pissed me off, that they continue this narrative that women are to sacrifice literally everything for a man who gets to do whatever tf he wants 😒

In my opinion, Harry Styles CAN act, since he was decent in "Dunkirk", and in this film. He just wasn't quite the right choice for "Don't Worry Darling", which might have been due to him replacing Shia LeBeouf.
