I have been walking down high street for years at night when I finish work and have never been attacked.
Good to know. Shows that you shouldn't believe everything you read in the papers! 😁 Thanks for watching 👍
Maybe people fear that you'll attack them ... snap at them like a big dog ?
@@dodgeboy9052 How right you are. I am a woman who having training in self defence and knows how to look after myself.
Really enjoyed both episodes as a blast from the past. I grew up in Ellison St, Just off Spon Lane in the 50's and 60's and before the advent of the new High St and shopping centres. I recall all the pubs on Spon Lane, The Good Shepherd Church, Spon Lane Senior School and Kendricks Park.....memories of (not) so long ago. I left West Brom in 1973 for a new and successful life in Western Australia and talk to my children, grandchildren and Gt Grandchildren about my childhood. As someone already mentioned, thanks for the memories.
Thanks so much for watching and for your kind comments. There is a third episode if you can find it! You wouldn't recognise the Lyng now if you walked up from Ellison St to the Town Centre.
What was your house number in Ellison st
An unexpectedly captivating piece of reportage. I will be “tuning in” to the following episodes.
Cheers. It was a good way to test our new camera. Thanks for watching. Have a great Christmas.
Thank you so much for posting this I really enjoyed it and you are knowledgeable of the town. I'm a Bromwich bloke of 71 and apart from some years in the army have always lived here, I live near Old Church which is where my family came from. My first job was at K&J in 1968. I used to drink in the Sandwell or the Star & Garter where Frank the barman ruled. I could talk forever over this town but wont as it's probably boring for non natives.
That's very kind of you to comment. We remember Frank well. He was the best barman I think I have ever seen in action. 'Here's your change and the rest in silver'
I’d like to hear your stories, but there again, my mom grew up on the Tantany. Things change of course. I think the town as with many others are suffering from the recession. .
@@markwilson4052 Thanks for watching. Yes it is great hearing other peoples recollections about West Bromwich. Hope it bought back some memories for you.
The Masovia bakery is splendid. Good coffee too.
If we had walked the other way down the High Street, we would probably have grabbed a coffee and cake. Ah well, next time! Thanks for watching and commenting 😀👍
I’m 62 now, and was born in Harlem Hospital. For the first 2 years of my life i lived with mom and dad in a block of flats right by the clock tower in Carters Green it’s long been demolished now, but dad always said it was a fire trap! Also, when Guest Motors was changed to the casino, it all had to be strengthened, it had been in a state of collapse, and nobody knew! By the flats in Carters Green there was a cinema Mom used to go there regularly !
Hope we brought back some memories! Thanks for watching 👍
@Spica1000. I was born in Hallam Hospital, too, sir/ma'am, but that was in 1958, a few years before your good self. If memory serves me right, the cinema that Mom used to go to was called The Tower.
Very nice vlog keep it up guys I love ❤️ West Bromwich beautiful
Cheers! Thanks for your kind comments and for watching.
Hello from the Copper Coast County Waterford Ireland. I'm enjoying this Lisa and Giles. I'm amazed at the changes since I was last in the town centre back in 2010. Thank you for this.
No problem, Mick. We are getting into this YouTubing thing. West Brom brings back some memories, doesn't it?
My parents left West Brom in the late 60’s, my grandfather drank in the hop pole, I went to school in guns lane, so many memories
Thanks for watching. The Hop Pole is still a very popular pub. Hope you enjoyed.
I wonder if anyone has video footage of west brom town in 80s or 90s
Great coverage of West Brom but it’s changed since I left in the early 80s and it was the best decision of my life to do so.
I recommend you do the coverage at night and it might live up to the comments of the media.
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers for watching. We probably won't be covering it at night as the footage would be rubbish in the dark with our camera. But I take your point that areas change when it gets dark. 👍
Great video! Thanks for sharing! 👍👍😁😁
Thanks guys 😁👍
I played at a couple of pubs in the High Street twenty-odd years ago. One was called the Odd Fellows...and very aptly named it was! Tiny little place - I had to use a miniature drum kit just to fit in the band area. The other was the same place where Lisa danced, The Anchor. We played there half a dozen times and I remember fights breaking out whilst we were in mid-song. Proper fights, not just handbags, and we noticed there was old blood on the walls and ceiling. In the end, we had to stop playing there as it was like a war zone when the customers had a few sniffs of the barmaid's apron.
OMG I totally forgot the Oddfellows Arms! Happy days in West Bromwich. I remember getting my head kicked in outside the Sandwell. Good times!
Used to sometimes go in the ‘Oddys’ after Albion games. I remember the tiny ‘stage’.
Great video guys brought back lots of memories. I used to live on lodge road. Went to school at George salters. Drank in all the pubs. Capers wine bar and star and garter the Sandwell and many more. Sparkerls nightclub. The vine on match day. Moved to Scotland in 1985. Been back a few times to see the baggies getting a bit dearer know to travel. Hanged around all them places you showed in the video mucker. Keep it up 👍🏼. Boing boing. 🏴🏴👍🏼❤️.
Cheers! I couldn't remember what Capers was called, so thanks for that 😃 . Glad it brought back some memories. 👍
Hi Lisa and Giles! Great vlog .... I'd love to have a walk along here if we could turn back time to 30 years ago. What great nightlife, and a great town. Sadly a lot has changed though. Looking forward to the next installment ♥
I wish I could turn back time as well, I would be 25! 😃There were some great pubs along here. Not sure what they are all like now. I have only been to the Wheatsheaf, the Sportsman and the Vine in recent times. Thanks so much for watching!
Brought back some happy memories.
Family connections to...
Guest Motors x2
Town Hall x 5
Library x3
Barclays Bank x 2
K&J x 2
Littlewoods ( now Home Bargains)
Think K&J building might be shops and flats when completed.
Must go to Town Hall and Library when renovations complete.
Yes, some very strong connections to the town. Thanks for watching 👍 Parts 2 and 3 to follow.
I like how you both talk with optimism regarding West Bromwich, sadly as a resident i cant share your optimism. A dangerous place on a nighttime
I got beaten up outside the Sandwell in the late 80s, so it has never been a perfect paradise, but there are worse places in the Midlands. I know I am damning it with faint praise. It's always worth remembering that an optimist has a far better time watching a football game than a pessimist, whatever the result! Anyway, thanks for watching and commenting. It's much appreciated.
That's very true, I like your reply. Your welcome
Great memories, great vlog, oh I do miss Woolies, was my first Saturday job. Does anyone remember Playground? Loved that toy shop 😍
Lisa remembers Playground but can't think where it was. I think everyone misses Woollies, especially since Wilkos went bump. 😃👍
@@TravellingLightLisait was in the Kings Square, pass the Dutchie on the left hand side 😁
The old gas showrooms by the library you mentioned. I believe it was taken down brick by brick and may be rebuilt in the Black Country museum.
I hope so! Thanks for watching 👍
Used to go to the pubs in West brom early 80s when we were rockers, changed to much now, no one I know goes there anymore, they spoilt it back in the 70s, when they built kings and Queens squares, and we all know who runs these shop
Thanks for watching 👍
Taking me back to the early 90's when I was married to a Bearwood woman. Thoroughly enjoyed this. Warm wishes from Millionaire Paul 👋 #moderndaybreakfastclub
I know Bearwood very well! That has also changed a bit. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the interesting tour of West Bromwich High Street. We have never been there - so it was great to catch a glimpse of what it is like. Enjoyed listening to your memories of the places along the street. Merry Christmas to you both and all the best for the New Year ❤🎄
Cheers for coming with us and keep on enlightening the USA! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too.
The Angels club was previously the Anchor one of my old friday after work ports of call.
A lot of the staff from the banks used to go in the Anchor at lunchtime. It was quite busy most of the time in the late 80s, early 90s. Thanks for watching 👍
West Brom used to be great in the 80s, kings and queens square had fantastic shops and the night life was brilliant fantastic lively pubs and nightclub by where the bus station is now, but like all towns they have changed, even though they have built the new square it will go the same way.
I wonder if people who remembered it in the 40's said the same thing about West Brom in the 80's. 😂 Thanks for watching 👍
Launderette is great but make sure you go when Anne is on. She's the best.
Clock House (which you didn't mention) is a decent pub, with a good pool table.
Thanks for watching and for your laundry and pool hints. 😃👍
Very traditional!
@@bobbugwithoneeyeskingiskin8974 Thanks for watching 👍
I worked in West Bromwich in 1969/70 at Radio Rentals, which was up near Dartmouth Square. It was a vibrant place then, but it looks a sad reflection of its former self now. I am happy to say that I haven't been anywhere near the place for many years.
Thanks for watching. Radio Rentals! We remember it well. The kids these days would never believe we rented TVs! 😂
@@TravellingLightLisa Yes, most people did in those days - particularly at the time mentioned when colour TV first started. Radio Rentals closed the West Brom branch as a service depot in 1970 - still kept open as a showroom - and I was transferred to the more 'exotic' Smethwick. They were much simpler and happier days back then. The Baggies' players would be seen around in all the pubs and clubs - The Steering Wheel Club was a favourite. I remember that Jeff Astle lived at the top of the town - in semi-detached house! I also remember Len Cantello, who was a first team player, standing across the road from the RR shop waiting for a bus! Can't imagine that happening these days.
@@salopian4037 The Four in Hand on All Saints Way was also a Baggies favourite. Now gone! I went to Len Cantellos testimonial. Adrian Chiles made a documentary on that game.
@@TravellingLightLisa I went in there a few times. Bryan Robson was a regular I believe.
A walk down West Bromwich High St. will always be more interesting and entertaining than going to watch the Baggies play at the Hawthorns !
Very harsh! You will be interested to know that the three degrees make an appearance in the third video. Those were the days!
@@TravellingLightLisa now that will be worth waiting for !
Thanks for posting! watching from switzerland :-) I grew up in west bromwich - a child of the 80s and 90s. Fond memories of the town.. I remember the high street used to look so much nicer back in those days. and the building society tower used to have that iconic digital clock. Shame the council didnt preserve the high street in the way that it should have done. The conversion of the old bus station into that pink and black monstrosity was a shame. I moved out of the town around the time it was built. The 'public' should have been more like a modern digitial library and media centre, as well as a leisure centre. A place where you could go and have fun but also learn new skills like how to do computer programming. One of the problems the town had (guess still has), is there is not much on offer for young adults with time on their hands. I blame the council for not having any imagination.
Thanks for watching. Glad we could bring some memories back to you in lovely Switzerland. It's sad to say but West Brom has fared better than some other nearby town centres (Dudley, Wolverhampton and WalsalI am looking at you!). Thanks for watching and commenting. We had fun filming all 3 parts. 😁👍
@@TravellingLightLisa just watching part 2 now. Oh what memories! Kings square the Queens square! Got yourself a new suscriber :-) Thank you for the lovely videos.
@@MrBulletpointyou are welcome. Thank you so much for subscribing and for your kind comments. Have a great weekend. 👍
It's only in Westbrom this is happened. Its great everywhere else
Oh dear! We've not been everywhere else yet. We'll update you when we have. Thanks for watching! 😁👍
Thanks
No problem
Sad what's happened to The Marksman. Used to be a brilliant pub.
I remember some classic karaoke nights in the Marksman. I preferred the Wheatsheaf though. Thanks for watching 👍
Nice steady sharp footage... Are you using a hand-held gimbal? What camera are you using?
It's a DJI Osmo pocket 3. It's a tiny camera with a 1 inch sensor and a gimbal. Brilliant bit of kit - you'd love it! store.dji.com/uk/product/osmo-pocket-3?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAyp-sBhBSEiwAWWzTnnZEvxL_cb4kZUN-kVF3jFaMWU2NKPRGIGY_4TviT4o5FB1ZsAFY1BoCkvsQAvD_BwE&vid=153321
Christchurch I recall near the Job Centre. It was derelict in the 80s, due to a fire
It was a dark black building even before the 🔥 Thanks for watching Mark 😀👍
The talk of the town is that the old K&J building will be a Wetherspoons
Ooh, that's interesting! I thought Spoons did refurbs, not complete rebuilds. About time something happened with it though. Thanks for watching 👍
good memories. I wonder if anyone remembers my Grandad, Cal Wherton?
Hope somebody has some memories of your Grandad. Did he live and work in West Brom?
@@TravellingLightLisa He did. Was from the Tantany. Cal was , let’s say, ‘notorious’ ( was once banned from virtually every pub in the town).
9:58 if you look at the shireland biomedical school you know why the window is boarded up is because a car crash into a classroom at night and the school is where im going now and the classroom that was hit by the car was the classroom i was in it happened like the start of October or close to it
@@RobertBarnard-i8x Wow! A close call for you. Thanks for the info 👍
I was born there alum hospital 1966
I used to go drinking around Hallam Hospital every weekend. There were lots of good pubs close by. Thanks for watching 👍
317 used to be the Post Office
Cheers. Thanks for watching 👍
Used to drink in the Post Office around late nineties when I travelled back for weekends.
Had my wedding reception in the Sandwell, got wed at 10.30, reception at 12, in the hawthorns to see the baggies beat Coventry 4-0 at 3, all my guests were baggies fans, then back in the Sandwell by 5.15. Danced the night away. All said, it looks like someone tried putting lipstick on a pig in the high street.
Happy memories! Not so much for me, I had my head kicked in outside the Sandwell in 1986. 😂
@@TravellingLightLisa I had it inside, one Friday night when some Great Bridge lads decided they didn't like us. But that's how it was back then, territoriality was rife, coming from Smethwick we were resented by the folk of West Bromwich & if you were from Tipton, well you ran the gauntlet. Happy days, sometimes....
@@TravellingLightLisa The Sandwell was always rough back in the day. Was there in 1988 and saw a big fight. Some rough ‘locals’.
West Bromwich High St isnt bad at all. People just get on the wagon and start lighting up the fireworks. Times have changed and along with this , people and businesses also change.
We found it to be fine. As you can see, we have a great deal of affection for the High Street. Some people can't cope with change! 😂 Thanks for watching 👍
@@TravellingLightLisa 100% thanks for sharing 😎
come on you baggies
Boing boing!
Same as any other town today
Thanks for watching 👍
At 24:12 at the rear of the Methodist church they have put a fence across the graveyard, although I have lived 2 mins walk from the town centre for the last 44 years,, I didn't know they had done this, Up to a few years ago there was a grave at the rear far right with the slab partly broken and if you put your hand inside you would have felt a small box, upon inspection it was a coffin shaped box about 8" long and it was a geocache, perhaps that is why the church authorities may have had access blocked and also there were some very old graves in there, maybe they became unsafe to walk around, the high st I wouldn't walk along at night but I don't think the level of violence is as bad as the sensationalist creators like to think it is, but makes good click bait
@@Outandaboutwithpoggy I know. We were disappointed to find it was fenced off. It was always a little hidden area that not even many local knew. Interesting about the geocache. Thanks for watching 👍
my mutha used to work in K&Js and i used to have a pint in the star and garter and buy my jeans in Gittys. long long time ago. we all know what’s gone wrong.
Thanks for watching! 👍
Opposite K&jays my mom used to buy my school uniform
I can't remember the uniform shop there..so many different shops...I do remember getting my sandwiches from a shop opposite K&J in the late 80s. Thanks for watching and hope it bought back some Happy memories.
Why are there so many pay phones still around. Who still uses them nowadays
Thanks for watching. Yes so many pay phones still looking very sad. I've noticed some have been repurposed into defibrillator sites or mini book swop sites though.
Deany ! It's a shit tip like all towns and city's . All done intentionally Country wide. If you don't know by now, you no one will.
PR. That reminds me I need to order some new rose tinted specs! 😂 Hope you are doing ok 👍
You'll need them very soon me old mucka. The Kalergi Plan and the WEF have succeeded. Hope you are doing well mate. I still live local and travel through this crap hole everyday, such a shame to when I was akid in the 70's/80's.@@TravellingLightLisa
Hello🖐👀👋
Hello 👋
Hello? 🤷♂️
So sad to see England going down the toilet
We didn't think it was too bad, certainly better than some other High Streets, and we had an interesting day out. Thanks for watching 👍
at least rents are at all time highs
Thanks for watching 👍
Could be worse it could be Wednesbury
The Golden Cross, the Turks Head and finish at Patrick's? What could possibly have gone wrong? 🤣
LOL 👍😂
😂😂😂
Not as good as before no wilko no whsmith or argos etc many british stores gone. Tesco still there and better
Most High Streets have changed. West Bromwich has fared better than some. But it's not like it used to be Thanks for watching 👍
Try at night
Will have a think about that one!!
Thats nothing. Come to glastonbury high st. You wont get awsy from it alive
In that case, I'll probably pass! Thanks for watching 👍
I lived in carters green area 10 years ago immigrants everywhere complete dump and go there after dark youve gott be street wise they will strip you down and take everything and dip down the tram tracks
Thanks for watching 👍
I wouldn't say it's dangerous as any less or more than anywhere else, but it's definitely gotten very dirty. Mind the chewing gum on the floor and dog poo and litter ridden with rats. As for shops, better go elsewhere. The council have a lot to answer for big time for ruining it for shop keepers, especially UK citizen retailers.
Thanks for watching
terrible musak
