Tristan is not a good character in the anime dub. He consistently lies to Serenity to try to get into her pants yet thinks he's a gentleman. He lied about Joey's duels during battle city, he lied about training Joey, prevents Duke from revealing the truth. Eventually telling the truth both instances but only because he was essentially forced to do so. Serenity told him to stop the bs during battle city, and Nezbit whoops him forcing him to reveal he's a simp for Serenity and lied to her.
Honda/Tristan would be a main important character in almost any other shonen anime. He just had the bad luck to appear in the rare one where physical strength and fighting ability, stoical quiet confidence, and a motorbike license don't really count for much, especially when you can't play strategy games at a high level and don't have either money & tech or supernatural powers.

My favorite part about Tristan is that he gets the honor of “most fucked up animation errors and localization” in Yugioh. He’s been Black, he’s teleported from across the literal city in a matter of seconds, there’s the infamous “I found Joey, bye.” Tristan gets this almost surreal fourth wall breaking track record and it’s just interesting how often it feels like an “oh shit, I think we forgot to put Tristan in this scene.”
Tristan isn’t useless. He’s the brawn of the group. When he, Yugi, Tea and Bakura were getting chased by a boulder in the cave, he punched it. When they found Kemo trying to kick a kid off the island after Mokuba stole the boy’s starchips, Tristan fought Kemo to defend him. When Marik brainwashed Joey into dueling Yugi, and sent the Rare Hunters to capture Tristan, Serenity and Duke, Tristan beat up the Rare Hunters and made them tell him where Joey and Yugi were. When Weevil had a kid steal Joey’s duel disk, Tristan jumped from the bridge and grabbed the kid and stopped him. When Serenity was being chased by a dinosaur, Tristan jumped onto the dino’s back and rode it into the water, away from Serenity. When Tristan, Serenity and Duke were dueling Nesbitt, and Nesbitt was about to attack Serenity which would have wiped out her life points and separated her from her body, Tristan sent his deck master to intercept the attack, sacrificing himself and getting separated from his own body. It was Tristan who found and rescued Mokuba’s body from Pegasus’s guards. And when threatened by Yami Bakura, he manage to grab the Millennium Ring and threw it into the forest. It may have come back later, but at least he stopped Yami Bakura from taking over Mokuba’s body. He was the one who immediately tried to investigate Pegasus’s castle while everyone else was asleep to try a figure out how Pegasus was cheating.
In monkey robot form, Tristan stopped Nesbitt in his stolen body saving Kaiba's life. And without Tristan's monkey robot form, Yugi and his companion would've never find out about Noah's origins and to catch up with Kaiba and to watch his duel match with Noah and also Pharoah to duel against Noah. And Tristan help carry Rex's soulless vessel, and then later on Joey's.
If only Triston had like a rare card that he inherited from his father or something, a card that he later gives to Joey or Yugi in a desperate situation, a card that would stick with them until the end kinda like red eyes or Jinzo, that would have help Triston become a more impactful character I think.
I foresaw the advent of Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged and decided to make a useless character created for the sole purpose of comic relief. I always intended for Barney the Dinosaur to voice Tristan. -Kazuki Takahashi (1961-2022)

As much as I hate to admit it, yeah. Tristan/Honda doesn’t have much going on. He feels like a less relevant version of Joey/Jonouchi. It feels like the most important thing he does is get controlled by Bakura later. 😪 Oh well, at least he’s funny in the abridged.
Imo Tristan serves as a reminder for us the audience of who Joey used to be, and who Joey could be again if he calmed tf down and walked away from the card game fuckery. They are similar, as they bonded over similar interests & personalities, but that helps to illustrate how supernatural encounters, high pressure and involvement in powerful circles can change someone for both better and worse. Likewise, Duke is who Seto could easily have beeen without as much success or privilege or intelligence, or who Seto could be if he were humbled, went to therapy and got over himself a bit.

I mean, Tristan's theory about the spy makes sense. That happens in Battle City with Esper Roba, and there was another false "psychic" in Mai. Having a flashy thing followed by knowing what happens does have precedent in-universe.
Tristan is basically a henchman of the group, like carrying unconscious bodies, battling anyone who gets in his way, and intimidate them with words. I'm almost sure he and Kaiba were in a same high school wrestling club. But yeah, Tristan is nearly useless throughout the series, so he maybe so deserves more.

Tristan keeps Joey grounded and down to earth, which is a security that Joey needs considering his horrible abusive home life and his gang past. Tristan also makes sure Joey is aware of his own limits and that he doesn't get lost in all the weirdness around Children's Card Games. Tristan isn't necessarily a good character for drama in this respect, but he's the kind of friend & supporter you'd really want irl.
You forget his most important contribution in the series...carrying Joey after his soul got taken in Waking the dragons. And his most important scene when he almost dropped Joey but Kaiba caught him before he hit the ground.

He almost gets his friends killed Least Tea Duels and helps her boyfriend and her friends Wasted potential and is more like the Yamcha of Yugioh actually he’s Yajarobi
Duke isn't exactly a 'man of action' either, though. Man's all talk, especially after Yugi defeats and humbles him. And he's certainly happy enough spending most of his time with Tristan once they get to know each other, so he clearly doesn't think Tristan's useless👀
Sad reality that Tristian vs Joey in duel didn’t happen, also it would show Tristian that dueling isn’t fun and game and Tristian would feel filling in same shoe as Joey went through.
What if Tristan had a Egyptian past. what if jono and teana are canon in yugioh. Both of them are Tea and Joey Egyptian counterparts from Yu-Gi-Oh forbidden Memories.
If you want a REAL useless character. Look at Tori from Yu-Gi-Oh ZeXal. And while there are plenty of other useless side charactets in that show, Tori has way more screen-time than pretty much anyone who isn’t Yuma. And the show has contrived moments to give her more screentime, like having her ride on the Duel Roller Coaster with Yuma, or Kathy saying Tori should go with Yuma to Barian World. In the later case, when Yuma and Tori arrive in Barian World, Alito traps Tori in a bunch of vines, forcing Yuma to duel Alito to free her. Whereas if she wasn’t there, Alito couldn’t have done that. Meaning her presence made the situation worse.
