    Fix your Ford Distributor Position
    Episode 516 Autorestomod
    This week we show you how to put the Ford Small Block 302 distributor in the correct “forward” position. We do this the easy way: we simply clock the spark plug wires one position back from the current one and then move the distributor accordingly.

    Top video again guys, but you are more forgiving than I am. I'd rub that distributor with the back of a fast moving ax, and put a Ford one in there.

    I always keep the #1 molded into the cap as 1. Would rather not have to remember that 1 isnt 1.

      Normally I agree. Anymore, not all caps come marked as such.

    May you please tell me what do you use to increase idle speed when the AC is on. I did not see any high idle solenoid on the Holley do you have a vacuum switch ?

    • @AutoRestoMod

      That is a real struggle. Holley offers a Holley 46-74 - Holley Universal Throttle Solenoid that can help with that.

    Did you reuse the old distributor hold down or is there one for the HEI type distributor in a Ford. My old Ford distributor stem does not have the same shape as the HEI one.

    Besides looks why does it matter if the vac advance isn't exactly straight ahead? Less ability to rotate one direction or the other to adjust timing?

    • @DragPakMerc
      @DragPakMerc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, this one is really for the car show crowd. If functionality is your only concern, then so long as there's enough available rotation to set the timing to your desired spec, it's good. But when a car is expected to sit around with the hood up, inviting the public to check out the engine compartment, having the distributor aligned as intended is a quick indication whether a builder takes enough pride in their work to sweat the details, or not.

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are at the top of the adjustment and running into the water neck you have it too far over.

    I always pop out the distributer move a tooth.I like to keep number 1 wire on number 1 on the cap.
    I did have oil pump drive fall out and get lodged in the oil pan about 30 years ago.When ever I rebuild engines I always make sure the clip is on the oil pump drive .

    One of the saddest noises was that little "clink" when my oil pump shaft fell into the pan. To make matters worse, I was unaware that there was a little washer to put on the shaft until AFTER I got the pan and everything else buttoned back up. Hoping there is never a need to pull the distributor out ever again...

    Lohl.. were ever it runs right. Yep the pump rod came up I heard it drop ping off crank splash in the oil down in pan. I happen to have an old FE out on property, robbed the oil pump rod out of it an used a piece of McDonald's soda straw as a bushing in distributor shaft end pressed oil rod in lowered it down thru intake an it went rite in lined up perfectly. Any time I pull a distributor ever since tht nitemare I shake it back n forth as I raise it up an out so rod will shake loose an not come with it.

    heavy duty trucks had the vacuum advance pointed towered the carburetor! the distributors on the hd engines are taller so you can do that. the hei distributors for fords seem tall so one could try positioning it so the vacuum advance points to the carburetor. the plug on the side of the hei often hits the air cleaner with the hei with the vacuum advance pointing the right way! have not tried it but with the hei it my be possible like on the hd engines.

  • @johnmilner7603
    @johnmilner7603 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would not teach people the method of rotating the wires but I guess you have to on a Ford. On a Chevy as I have, nothing drops from the dizzy when it’s pulled. On a Chevy, do it right by pulling the dizzy out. There’s a reason why the #1 wire is marked on the cap in shop manuals. If someone doesn’t know the history of an engine and buys the car and finds the #1 plug wire isn’t in the correct position on the cap, then they may get confused.

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They could, but unless you are running a cap labeled 1 it will be where it should be. I agree that the removal method is "preferred". But it can be a real pain with the oil pump hex shaft trying to get that to move into the "just right" position.
