  • We look at the Pro's and Cons of 'A' Class or fully integrated motorhomes v panel and coach built models.
John and Jo have plenty of experience with both panel van conversions and coach built motor caravans and campers. Bit they now own 'Ruby' a Rapido 9090F. How does. the 'A'. Class compare to drive?

It is worth mentioning that the Caravan and Motorhome Club run a short course for beginners. My wife attended one when bought our first MH and found it very useful. We now have a Rapido A Class and tow a trailer with a car on it. She is happy driving when towing, including in Europe.

Ha Haah yes. she can sleep anywhere in this van. Even when underway. I think she likes the hum of the. engine.

Thanks for the video, we find our coach built (Chausson 640) quite noisy on the road with various rattles, wind & road noise despite making sure everything is stored as secure as possible, would you say an A-class is generally quieter to drive?

One of its biggest cons would be how easy they are wrote off. Saw an A class catch a wall in Cornwall at 15 mph, ripped the back end off it. But 30 mpg is impressive.

Bespoke low volume bodywork will always increase the risk of a right off I guess

It's irrelevant wetger the front end is an A class to rippibg the rear end off...a C class or a caravan would equally suffered!

It's not the fact that It's an A class that makes it 'obviously harder to park' but it's length surely.
Integrating or fully coachbuilding to the front of the vehicle merely makes it all the same width. My 1991 Hymer B544 'A class' is 18ft 5 or 5.63m long and shorter than most full size panel van conversion and it has a tight turning circle & short wheelbase but loads more space inside for it's footprint than any van or 'C class'. It's bus like steep windscreen means the drop down double is several feet further forward than sloping front inefficient low profile designs too.
30mpg 5 berth in way under 6m. It's no contest with any other design!

I agree Paul. And dont get me wrong we loved our A class. The A class is no harder and potentially easier to park than the equivalent length and width coach built, and a good deal more space efficient. The parking is easier on the van conversion because its shorter and narrower than the A class we had.(7.5 meters)
So effectively we have done some serious downsizing.
