  • Call and song of Horned Lark/Shore Lark/Fjellerke (Erimophila alpestris) subspecies flava, from the vast Hardangervidda mountain plateau Norway in the first week of July. Scenes of calling Shore Lark are from 2017. Hiking up the mountain from Tinnhølen I came across some relatively bare open ground with a rock pile in the center. There was a small flock of larks foraging and calling and sometimes perching on the rocks. The shot of the singing lark is from 2012. There was a dense fog and several birds singing. I kept down low beneath the crest of a hill and waited for the bird to reach a singing post. These are prime breeding grounds for Dunlin (Calidris alpina). A fledgling scampered past and suddenly stopped, perfectly camouflaged in the grasses. I took a quick shot and stepped back, in awe of the tiny creature in this endless landscape. The last bird shown is a Rock Ptarmigan (Lagopus mutus) in summer plumage. The loud sharp calls of Common Redshank (Tringa totanus) can be heard in the clip before the Ptarmigan and plaintive notes at the end the videos are from European Golden Plover (Pluvialis apricaria).

Lovely footage, Clive. I filmed a pair of them a couple years ago, and I got fond of them, so I welcomed a chance to see and hear another one.

Thanks for your comment. The larks are cute and also very hardy, breeding at high elevation in the mountains. Lapland Bunting is usually nearby, bu the larks like the more exposed patches. Snowfinch is more extreme, sticking to the highest regions with snow fields and scree.

How beautiful the world could be without so many people.

Yes, it's special there. Wide open spaces and you can walk everywhere. No "Keep out private property signs", no wire fences or posts, no messages of any kind.
Cell phone coverage is spotty and if fog sets in it's easy to get lost. Yes, the male could be singing to attract a mate but perhaps more likely to defend breeding territory at this time of year (first week of July).

What a location! Also great to hear the lark song. I usually only see this species in winter.

I live a very long way from Norway, due north of its antipode.
