Agencies still use tape decks cause it's too risky to update them and the infrastructure is almost perfected lol. Just takes an age to read from them. LTO5 tape masterrace 😎

With regards to modern tech, if you know what a SCIF is (basically an office where classified materials are handled) all modern tech is pretty much banned except for government approved devices. Mostly because of their ability to be tracked or collect images & audio.

Control has become one of my recent hyperfixations and there's so little discussion content on youtube for it, i cannot describe how great it's been to find your videos because for starters it has defintely aided in quenching my thirst for contrnt surronding the game but it has also generally just been amazing and lead to me noticing details i hadn't previously in game!

    Two random thoughts.
What if when "smart" devices become.. understood - the object of power that the device will become will be.. inteligent?
What if when the new devices that dissapear in the bureau are being.. examined by the oldest house? they break becouse it is testing them... trying to understand them...

Honestly I love the way the No. 2 pencil ban works for the game. I remember when I first read that document, I was confused and ended up finding it really funny. I just thought it was some joke thing and didn’t think too much of it.
As the game went on though, and I understood a bit more about how the universe of Control worked, I finally got why they specifically were mentioned. They have such a universal image to people that if I had to guess, the FBC probably has had legitimate issues with no. 2 pencils becoming altered items in some way and causing trouble.
It’s…still honestly pretty funny to me but god I’d hate to be the person that got hurt by an altered pencil.

Another great video, thanks for sharing; I really appreciated the recap about Objects of Power.
I love to see how you're focusing in "secondary" aspects to generate discussion on underrated topics!
The first thing I thought was "it's a super secret security department, of course they want avoid devices that makes leaking information much easier", and even if it may still be one of the reasons, now I think the last point you touched it's the most important and it's a little meta because many people if they were asked to describe a bureau, they will probably describe something like the FBC.
More over, eliminating the technology we (gamers) are more familiar with rn contributes to the sense of alienation and mistery that the whole game builds.

I also think the collective conciousness plays a massive role in this as well. When we think of a bureau, we mostly are familiar with them using outdated technologies as a while, as we are familiar with how slow things are and how much of a pain it is to start shifting to more modern standards.
Take the DMZ for example. When we can easily file everything via servers and do things online, we still need to file paperwork anyways due to a formality, and just accept the fact that they use older technologies anyways. And it isn't unsurprising to us when we hear the FBI and whatnot still using older standards and technologies from the 1970s thanks to films and depictions of such. Despite the FBI, NSA and whatnot being increasingly modern, the FBC is stuck in the past with older tech because collectively we cannot think of a bureau as anything but, because of how inefficent some things are and the formality when dealing with actual bureaus.
The suit for example, a classic bureau icon, and amongst them, paperwork, files and whatnot, but not a hint of modern technology in sight as we think of a bunch of grumpy old men running the entire operation, and they would be more familiar with older tech as compared to modern equipment. Its not so much as the Oldest House cannot accept the idea of new equipment or "smart" items, but rather we think that these old men cannot think of using these new equipment because they are older and are more familiar with older equipment.
So collective conciousness also plays a massive role, as the public in general still thinks of a bureau using outdated equipment and standards anyways, when the reality is much more different, but thats the effect of the oldest house at play.
Regardless, this is an excellent presentation and breakdown as well. Thank you.

I'd love to see Control go on and on and become a franchise all on its own, apart from Alan Wake. It reminds me of the best parts of Stephen King's shared universe - that idea of "mundane fantasy" or "magical realism", stuff that's just going on around us and without human interaction or intervention, but "bleeds" into our world. Love this stuff.

  • @roonkolos

I might be grossly oversimplifying things but what I got was this:
Take an object anywhere around the world, ask anyone there what it is and they will instinctively know what it is, what it's purpose is and what it represents
Understanding at its core and at its finest & simplest what it means. It doesn't matter where you live. A chair is a chair and that simplicity is what The Oldest House understands. Fundamentals. And as you wonderfully said it: if it ain't broke, don't fix it

First of all - great video, glad I stumbled upon this channel.
Second - this concept always bugged me. The oldest house is already filled to the brim with archetypal objects, where's the guarantee that they won't go altered? Even the clothing employees whear, the mundane obejct they use, their tables, chairs, speakers, guns, most things inside the building are, at the end, archetypal representations of their concepts - I half-expected to see the items inside the building to be insanely designed and barely recognizable, and seeing the exact opposite just confuses me - a thousand items inside the House should be going altered every day.

I mean, if an object is too familiar, it isn't allowed inside.
But, if an object isn't too familiar, it can't stay inside. 🤔

I have some problems with the shared understanding not being established in new tech so it is problematic within the oldest house, its a bit of a gap because at the time they adopted the site a lot of that technology was not in the forms and usage we see in the game. In the mid 60s computer data storage came as tapes, punch cards and most bizarrely something much closer to a modern solid state solution of capacitance gates stacking up binary states into data than anything from the 70s and 80s like HDDs and floppies. Those old styled digital desk calculators for example didn't exist, at the time the FBC moved in mechanical calculators would have been how that was handled, expensive and hard to use for most people.
Other things like batteries would be familiar in concept from the 19th century through to today, chemical reactions creating or maintaining an imbalance of electrons to create a flow. Other stuff like screens, I think a flat panel of some kind is the same in concept as a CRT and a mobile phone is really just a radio in concept even if the back end of how it functions goes deeper but that goes for any technology. To summarise, a lot of the 40-50 year old tech in the Oldest House would have been newer, shinier with less time to form a shared consensus when they moved in compared to a mobile phone to us today and much of the newest tech we have today isn't really that different from the old tech, just easier to use for the layman and proliferated to a massive degree.
If I had to fan theorise my own misgivings away it would be that they had some problems with new tech, perhaps just perceived problems or related to the OOPs and they got paranoid about it or even triggered problems because of it and reflexively banned it all. Plus there is all the data gathering and reporting modern devices do, without each chip and line of code coming from the FBC they could never be sure of outside parties realising devices disappear in NYC and pop up in other parts of the world or someones Google Timeline and other issues looking really strange.

I have to disagree somewhat with the "smart" items explanation. Even in 2019, I think the archetypes for "smartphone" and "laptop" were pretty well fixed and well known. (Watches... maybe not.)
I propose that the risk (other than just Trench being paranoid) was that a smartphone had a high chance of getting altered. When taken outside TOH, it would connect to the network of servers, and we know there's a chance for an altered item to create another altered item. There's a risk of an explosion of altered items! Were're lucky TOH is made of thick concrete and doesn't have wifi! (Or maybe it's already happened, which explains why my mobile provider keeps trying to push unwanted apps to my phone.)

Maybe I'm missing something, but I still don't know why the Rangers use Lewis Mk1 LMGs from WW1 😅

I think newer standards like MK16s and whatnot are too "modern" for the bureau standards, and when it comes to weapons, its better to take the safest approach than to get into the bureau with, say a glock, despite a glock being made around the same era. Most "modern" weapons are built during the cold war, and effectively puts it in the same time period as those computers, but as humanity, we think of even older equipment.
And for weapons, doubly so. Better a broken iphone than a disasterous result with "newer" weapons.

Question: Why don't the HRAs count as modern technology in this regard? It is absolutely new with not a hint of anything like it in the collective subconscious. It's not even trying to look like a protective vest.

What if the reason why "smart" devices aren't allowed inside the bureau is because of the Internet?. Like imagine hiss like entity taking control over the Internet. That would be the end of the world.

It would be funny if The Oldest House replaced modern tech with older equivalents.
Oh, you have a laptop? Well now it's a spiral notebook and a beige IBM compatible PC from 1984.
