Art10 - thanks for the timely advise. And yes as an architect I've witnessed so called 'builders' using street drains to flush cement and plaster slurry! However the quantity of slurry flushed from the stone tumbling drum at weekly-10day intervals was minute and it is essential all previous 'grit' are removed from drum and stones tumbled to avoid carry-over contamination.
A VERY important step of tumbling is to NEVER pour the slurry created by tumbling down ANY drain or toilet. EVER. This settles at the bottom of the drain and sets like cement. Pour it into a hole you dig in the ground, or into milk cartons or a 5 gallon bucket and set it out to evaporate. You can truly ruin your entire plumbing system by pouring the used water in a drain.
I would appreciate some help, please. One year ago I bought a National Geographic Professional Rock Tumbler Kit and try as I might, I simply can’t get my stones to shine. I have tried time and time again and followed all the steps religiously but nothing. I have often repeated the pre-polish and polish stages and the burnishing, still no joy. I make sure the stones are similar in hardness and the barrel is totally clean. I live in a hard water area, so I used only bottled water, but it made no difference. Then I tried distilled water, but again, no joy. Can you suggest what else I could do?
congrats to all the posts. I made TP for 38 years in a mill. Still had to learn how to make it. All u had to do was crinkle or fold it, no brainier. I had to make sure yaull could.
Hi, I haven't done tumbling yet, but I want to start and I read a bit in the net. Isn't it too much water? I thought there should be a kind of sludge, that should not be to thin. Or is that only valid for spirators (vibrating machines). Thanks
After 40 years of plumbing I know this. Rocks the size of a grain of rice are not going to be flushed through the trap. They just sit there collecting various solids. i.e. soap, hair, etc. Then, when you or a drain clearance operative run a hand top through the overflow to unstop it, it gets rid of everything but the rocks. And then the process starts again. The trap has to be removed and the rocks poured out along with hair ties, razor blade covers, earrings and the such
when a stone is tumbled, is it possible to have a type of color "gap" in the piece. i recently bought some tumbled bloodstone and there seems to be a missing space in the stone which seems to be like the stone is broken and the gap consists with a regular crystal to keep the shape smooth. if u can comprehend my description can u tell me if i got some fakes or is it the real thing? thanks friends :)
One of the most important steps is to make sure to clean your rocks and tumbler very thoroughly between stages of tumbling.. even the tiniest amount of contamination from one stage to the next can cause dull finishes.. It is recommended you get an extra barrel and use it only for the polishing stage.
Yes - sand works [like it does on the beach!,] but you'd wear out your tumbler motor long before the stone was smooth. Hence the reason we use carborudum powder, which is nearly as hard as diamond, in finer and finer grades - good luck;-)
Art10 - should have made it clear - the slurry from stones was disposed of to the garden BEFORE stone/drum cleaned under the shower as shown in vid - sorry about that ;-)
If you want a professional High gloss finish you will have to polish a lot more I do the first stage 6 weeks recharging every 6 days, and the whole cycle takes 3 months and a LOT of Paitience, My tumbler runs at 42 RPM
@AvianFoster Checkout some other YT vids on stone tumbling - there may be cheaper option and yes - can't be done in the house but ok in the shed away from house!
Before retiring I was a general contractor, never, never, never pour the slurry out of the drum into your household of business drain. pour it outside.

Well it clearly works, as described, for me so why should I change it - BTW got some stones off Dunwich beach yesterday so tumbling again soon!
When his wife finds him cleaning stones in the bathtub, she's gonna freak out
+richard wysham You betcha, never, ever pour this stuff down your drain!
You will have some major plumbing problems.
+Kenneth Wallace well at least not large amounts of it.

I’m in love!!!
Where do you get these different types of grit?
I have extremely colored stones but not the materials to polish them! Where can i by the equipment?
@CaiqueLover Stones mostly from the beach [the sea's all around UK!] but on gravel paths in the park so almost anywhere;-)
amber is not a rock, but do you have any recommendations
@CaiqueLover Yes - fair point. The sludge goes into the garden [not shown in vid] so stones just rinced/washed under the shower !
Where were you collecting? It looked like a great spot to search.
7 days for each gritt?
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the main event. LETS GET READY TO TUMBLE!!
I'm going to be a geologist when I grow up
Sound cool!
7 days non-stop? doesn't the motor burn out?
.
Felicitaciones
what do you do if your tumbled stones do not come out with a shiny finish? I tried burnishing and it did not help :-(

@Slic3R1 Cylinders are equally effective - I should know!
@VirginiaMichelle No - motors and system designed for this and they work.

Could you tumble carrots or car tires?
+TheEpoxyExpert
Did you not read the part about not using rough or soft stones?
Just assume it applies to other things.
Wowwwwww
Uau que legal mais brasileiro escrito no seu canal
that is a lot of power for a few stones
you should use an octagonal drum, they are much more effective
