The rain only exists in his head, but it still affects the outside world, as the burger buns are soggy at the end. I think this is symbolism for how mental illness affects how a person can function on the outside, even if the problem starts on the inside of the mind
Also, I think the flowers on the tree are some sort of trigger, and sends Tyler into a bad mental state. I relate to that because seemingly innocuous things often can trigger my depressive thoughts, and like how the music video portrays it, it just darkens everything around me. When he says "it's over my head" I think is a submission to the hopelessness and helplessness that comes along with it
As someone who is learning to grow and trying to get better, the fear of "backsliding" is so real, and this is my favorite song on the album so far. It's just so relatable for me
"I don't wanna backslide to where I've started from
There's no chance I will shake this again
'Cause I feel the pull, water's over my head
Strength enough for onе more time
Reach my hand abovе the tide
    I'll take anything you have"
I relate this to my suicidal thoughts, and how if I return to how I was when my depressing thoughts were so heavy, there is "no chance " I'd be able to make it out again. And the chorus continues this with Tyler saying he can get out of the waters just "one more time" before drowning. The flashes of light, particularly in the chorus probably reference his attempt while standing in the road, as illustrated in Next Semester. It's like the thoughts trigger and he remembers where hew as at, and everything is dark a nd scary again. It's such a difficult place to be in . I wonder if the actual lyrics is "strength enough for all of one more time" (it would fit the rhyme scheme all of rhyming with above on the next line, don't even get me started on Tylers lyrical genius). He says something in between enough and for, but doesn't really enunciate it. If that lyric is the case I really worry about his metal state, because if he doesn't think he can conquer these feelings again I fear the worst could happen. As a song writer myself, sometimes I hid words a bit because they're really just for me, I wonder if it's a case of that
" If you could throw me a line
    I should've loved you better
Do you think that now's the time
    You should let go?
    It's over my head"
I relate to this part, as it looks like Tyler is just begging anyone to give him anything to continue. I have been in that place of desperation searching for absolutely anything to hold on to. He is almost condemning the people around him for not helping him more, as they are letting him go, right as he needs their support and the water is getting back "over his head "
The I should have loved you better line really hits home for me, as I recently got out of a relationship and it was all my fault, and the regret I have for that. She was really good for me, and I just wasn't what I needed to be, and it's my fault that the people I love runaway from me. My therapist thinks this is thought distortion but I'm not so sure.
As someone who recently deconstructed and lost their faith, I also interpret this as a cry to god. At the peak of my depression, I was begging for any sign that a god was there looking out for me. "Do you think that now's the time you should let go? " represents the idea that god is letting him go. He didn't give me anything, and it just hurt to have that part of my life decimated. I don't know what kind of god who has the power to help someone in their darkest hours and just chooses not to.
"Rat race, place to place, adding weight
    Tendencies on repeat, innit?
Benefit from a shoe with no lace
Take the seat with the crease in it"
For me, this is where I'm at now. Running in the rat race of capitalism trying to find a job and get my life back together. Everything seems to stay the same, every day repeats itself. The line about the shoe with no lace and the seat with a crease to me represents accepting the fact that the world isn't optimal to live in, especially for people with mental illnesses, but we have to make do with what we have.
    "I don't mind if it's lonely
    I don't mind if it's fair
I don't care, you control me
    Leading me anywhere"
To me, this is just completely giving up one's autonomy. I have been at that point where I would just do anything, let anyone tell me what to do and then do that. In my head, nothing mattered, so doing anything, even self destructive things, was justified because I would just follow where the wind took me not caring about the consequences. Also the lyrics of not minding that life isn't fair and that he's lonely, is a way of accepting the current situation. Almost apathetic to it. At 1:55 Tyler briefly rides with no hands, perhaps symbolizing this sort of reckless behavior.
I guess I'm just gonna go through all the lyrics, because this song just speaks to me.
"Bad place, on a hundred-dollar bass
Kinda wishin' that I never did "Saturday"
"Is that a stain? You should change"
    Are you doin' good?
Did you solve all of your problems?"
    Thanks for asking
In a way, but accidentally uncovered a new one yesterday
What happened to what I brushed under the rug?
I used to be the champion of a world you can't see
    Now I'm drowning in logistics"
I think the whole 2nd verse is about how popular the band became, and how with all this success, the thought patterns haven't really gotten better, the problems have just changed or morphed into new ones. This is so relatable to me, as I think whenever I solve some problems new ones always arise. The stain to me represents both mental illness and creative freedom, as some people want the band to change their style to become more popular. This speaks to me personally, as it's as if people around me expect me to change and behave as if I don't have any reason for behaving as I do. It's like they just don't get it. To me this is perfectly represented in the video as Tyler pays for his lemonade with a burger bun. He has the money for it, as shown at the end when he buys buns for a 2nd time. It doesn't really make sense, but in tyler's mind, the bun represents so much so it is more than a cash payment. At the beginning wee see Tyler throw away something in the same manner a t the end, suggesting that this isn't the first time the buns got soggy , nor will it b e the last. This push and pull of mental illness is all but routine. I wonder if the Saturday line is referring to that maybe Tyler thinks he sold out some creative integrity for a more traditional pop sound in Saturday. I think that is a constant theme from his songs, the push between what's popular and what Tyler wants to create.
I love the ending so much, because Tyler realizes he needs to go back for new buns, and Josh isn't upset. He doesn't go away, he waits for him. I think this shows how if you can find a true friend, they will help weather the storm with you, no matter what it is, or how often it happens. He even checks his phone, which I presume is to c heck and see if Tyler messaged him, he didn't expect him to be gone that long
I'm not sure, just thoughts from a depressed person
(edit: I appreciate everyone's kind words. I am doing okay right now mentally.)

I agree. Live is like a rollercoaster like I put it. It has its ups and downs but we all gotta hold on in are own way. Recently I've been struggling with eating. I don't have an ED but borderline and the rope that's my mind feels like it's slipping and I have no control. I'm slowly going backwards into the horrible. mental spot I was as a kid. It's scary and i find it interesting how my faith in God is more powerful when I'm struggling like I am currently. It always is but it's more noticable to me. And tøp helps as well as my faith in God. When life kicks my but.

Fun fact, Tyler recently posted something on social media with Fall Away in it and thematically this seems like a follow-up to Fall Away.

Specifically Drown, Fall Away, Doubt, and even that end part of Chlorine. Its all about his lost in connection to God but he still calls out for help even if he feels its undeserving. From Doubts: “Don’t forget about me” to now “You should let go, its over my head” bringing back that Drowning metaphor.

He just took a bite & tossed it. It didn’t have meat… that can’t sustain you, there is no protein, you can’t survive & get healthy. I think that goes with going back to our tendencies, going back to something that can’t sustain us. I think the lyrics can have three levels of interpretation - it might be Tyler's conversation with himself from his most successful/creative period i.e. he cannot find the same creative power in himself now; it can be addressed to us, fans, as he wants to make something that we like but it just makes him slide back into old destructive tendencies; and it can also be addressed to God, he even reaches to the sky in one of the shots. Then it might be about Tyler's doubts and questions that don't let him live and create in peace.

I'm so glad someone is on my line of thinking. But I can't shake this feeling of a little deeper meaning. It's on your line of Tyler not wanting to go back to his old type of songs ( as a parent myself I suspected his music would change once the babies started coming, look at the last album. I feel that was a test to see how it would go.) I'm afraid this is a goodbye to us. I'm afraid this is their last album. In Overcompensate, the lyrics "done running, come up with Josh Dun." I'm thinking in this Clancy world there really is no Josh. Just a make believe friend.
But in the end, I really hope its just the end of this kind of lyrics. That they just take a different style in the future.
I also felt it could be a 'church' song.
It's the emotions in his voice when he sings that drives the lyrics deeper. I tend to get a lot of goosebumps while listening to them.

When you get older (especially if you struggle with anxiety and/or depression) you're rethinking a lot of your past actions, achievements, failures. Not only mistakes but things that might have seemed good before. All those intrusive thoughts can make you go back to your old habits or old state of mind. personally, I think is a cycle of him struggling within him, and trying to be the best (for josh in this case) and because he doesn't want to let him down, he wont tell him that he couldn't bring the buns, he would repeat the cycle (alone). and josh is there for him, wondering where he's at, not knowing that he needs help.
take this as a sign to ask for help, your people is there for you, you just have to let them know.🧡

When the song mentions the pull it’s almost certainly a reference to the line in fall away that says “I can feel the pull begin”. In a Wikipedia article, the definition as relating to the Bible gives falling away as an alternative to the term backsliding.

  • @yeti4814
    @yeti4814 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

This music video blew me away. As someone who has ocd, I feel like it very very accurately described the cycle that I go through with obsessions and mental rumination. The idea that you’re trying to do this one thing but you keep sabotaging it and having to go back and try again is the core of ocd for me. “Tendencies on repeat,” “strength enough for one more time,” the idea of trying to “solve” all your problems just to find another thing come up and having to brush the other problems under the rug, and the idea of backsliding in general all speak to the obsessive compulsive cycle of repeating unhealthy habits and not having any control over them, as well as to how exhausting it can be because you don’t WANT to participate in compulsions. And, especially after you’ve had a period where your ocd has been in remission, you just don’t know if you have the strength to deal with it once it starts creeping up again. It’s overwhelming like the tide he mentions in the chorus. This might be a bit of a stretch, but to me the “throw me a line” and “you should let go” lines are directed at friends and family, begging for help, but not being able to overcome the guilt that you’re just weighing them down by pulling them into your cycle. It could also refer to reassurance seeking and knowing that people shouldn’t indulge in your compulsion. I could go on and on about this, deep down I really hope this song is about ocd because it makes me feel so seen and heard. If it is, it’s possibly the best execution of addressing ocd in media that I’ve EVER seen.

my perspective of the video was widely different than yours! In my pov the song seems desperate, like he is begging someone to save him from becoming depressed again, feeling like the tide (metaphor for depression) is over his head, and he is kind of acknowledging how he was not treating the people he loves right and despite wanting their help he also calls for them to let go of him. also if you notice the end frames- its not that he does not let it bring him down, he quite literally is backsliding. back to where the video started (the end shot and the start shot are the same from different angles, we see tyler throw a bag in the trash, then goes in and buys some buns- both in the start and the end. he is repeating the cycle)

It’s crazy because Josh directed this video, it’s so simple but at the same time deep

  • @CrashMk
    @CrashMk 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

My personal interpretation of it sounds like a cry out to his friends who he feels like he has let down because of his "backslides". It really hit home with me at the very end when Josh was flipping his burger, and checking his phone like "I hope he responds soon". Maybe it's not even relevant, but I noticed that he was just making one burger, which kinda represents how he invited his friend over for a simple meal just to spend time together, but he knows he probably won't make it because he's dealing with some stuff. It doesn't stop him from trying though. I've been both of those friends at different times in my life, and I can really feel it here.
The lyrics "I'll take anything you have, if you could throw me a line", has me thinking literally towards Josh, or that one trusted friend in a person's life. Just help me get out of this, and I'll prove that I'm a good friend. I can get those burger buns there safely this time, I promise. I'll "love you better", and appreciate you more. At the same time Tyler is wondering if he's even worth saving, or if he's just going to bring his friend down with him, and that is one hell of an internal struggle.
Lastly, the buns themselves. I read something like this in another comment and it made so much sense, but I can't take credit for it. The buns represent Tylers (our) coping mechanisms. Sometimes we try one, and it's not working like it did before, so we toss it aside without following through. The child in the video seems like he's talking to himself in his youth. Even his younger self needed help to cope, which is why he accepts "1 burger bun" as a form of payment.
Realistically, all of this stuff can be interpreted about a billion different ways, and I don't think any one way is the "right way". But, I think we'll hear what we want to hear, when it's important to heal, and that's all that really matters.
Stay above the tide, y'all. There's always strength enough for one more time. |-/

I agree that it could apply to a conversation with God. Another angle I saw was a conversation with a faithful friend that sticks with you through life's storms. At the end Josh is there, still cooking burgers, waiting for his friend. No matter how many times he fails and has to go back for more buns, Josh will be there with the burgers when he comes back. May not be what he was going for, but that angle speaks to me, as well as the conversation with God. Well written song with many levels for the listener.

Its interesting how his effort to not backslide and his worries about starting over again lead him to overthink and throw away all of the bread he got to begin with.
When he gets to the end, he realises that he, in a way, cornered himself and brought himself right back to the beginning.
Out of fear of changing... He repeated the cycle.
    That's just my theory🤷🏻‍♀️

Might of missed a few things. At the start when tyler shows at the store he throws something away. At the end he had a empty bag and threw it away at the store. Hes stuck in a cycle. Getting the buns. Going through them getting where he wants to be but they are ruined so he goes back for more. Doomed to repeat. Also "kinda wish i never did Saturday " the song Saturday. A very upbeat song from scaled and icy. Not their usual tone. Something about it he regrets. Maybe he is getting some push back from it. Or maybe its a message about what he gave into to do it. Many many layered video.

At the very start of the music video, you can see Tyler throwing an empty bag of Ted’s buns; I think that it’s important to see it as a repeating cycle of Tyler going back to buy new buns but always showing up with them ruined- a cycle of tendencies that he hasnt figured out how to navigate alone.

My interpretation of the flowers as he's biking:
As someone who is going through depression and never wants to leave the house even as the seasons change, seeing flowers or blooming nature which used to remind me that life goes on now can definitely be triggering because I feel like I should be recovering faster and making progress but instead I'm backsliding. It feels like the world is moving on without me when I am stuck in my current mental state. Maybe that's what they're getting at, especially with the swinging camera angles suggesting he feels alienated from the neighborhood he is familiar with/grew up in.
