I think the song is basically saying he's made some progress and doesn't want to go back to the problems he used to have - he does have some conversation with somebody and it could be like internal or possibly with a higher power The irony is in the video he does backslide...he keeps making the same mistake in not being able to get the buns to Josh
My take on this may or may not be correct, but I'll give my two cents: The bread is "Ned's Bread," (see the label) which is Tyler's creativity. Tyler tries out some, but when he doesn't like it, he tosses it to the side. By the time he gets to where Josh is waiting, Tyler has nothing to offer that is any good. He has to turn around and start over. In the meantime, Josh is ready and waiting, because it is the two of them together that is needed to complete the burger (project). I also think that, "bad place, on a hundred dollar bass, I wish I never did Saturday," is referring to the song Saturday from Scaled and Icy, because the album did not receive critical acclaim with critics or fans. He then says he's "drowning in logistics," or getting the music out to the fans that they will love. Of course, it also fits our lives in general, as well. We all need someone to help us when we are down, because we are always making progress, and we don't want to backslide, or start over (which Tyler does in the video). Also, I agree that Tyler is talking to himself (and possibly God as well).
I think it’s a triple edged sword, talking to God, the fans, and himself. I think you have a point with SAI not having critical acclaim and fans were torn over it, and therefore he wishes he hadn’t done it. I’ve also seen people bring up Migraine, and how Saturday lies between the best day and the worst, and he can distract himself by painting the town but the day after will always be Sunday. I also think the “lemonade” is actually “chlorine”, since we see Tyler drinking out of the same cup in Chlorine. I have two theories about the kid; he’s either a representation of the fans/Tyler’s loved ones, or it’s a representation of God. The kid gives Tyler a little bit of creativity, maybe that’s a song that came about due to giving away some of his bread (creativity).

Also, on a bit of a side note here but I swear, it’s actually quite ridiculous how many reactions I’ve seen where they either fail to see the credit that says Josh was the Director of the music video…or even worse they think the video ends with Tyler putting the money on the counter(again) and so they just completely miss the bit after, in which the credit is shown while Josh flips the burger and all ffs!?🤦♀️😤🤷♀️
I love how much you all love TOP and analyze the lyrics --- it’s years and years and layers and layers - some that were written well before they ever out them in an album. It’s all mental health related with some “that’s fun” (per Tyler) and he Lore of it all. Keep digging and reacting - you won’t be disappointed
definitely a deep and relatable track! love how many different ways there are to interpret this. this was the first video that josh (drummer) directed, cool to see the visuals he paired with the lyrics.
It ended the same way it started, Tyler is stuck in a cycle while Josh is just there waiting for him at the end. I think Josh already ate his burger and the patty left is Tyler's cause he taking so long to get there. But Josh always gonna wait for his friend. That's my opinion idk if it makes sense 😅
I believe that the relationship with everything ... especially between Tyler n Josh might be troubled, but at least we know Tyler gonna keep trying. Even in the midst of his tendencies to cycle through trauma and, in turn, affect what he'd bring him in the end.
Yeah, I think that's what he's referring to because Saturday came out during Covid, had a happy vibe to it, and people weren't ready and accepting to it. Perhaps he regrets it.. I personally think that he made the SAI album to get his people/fans out of the doom and gloom feeling during that time. I love the album. No matter what that song represents, it's always good to Backslide to reminisce his life. This Clancy album Is a gift wrapped perfectly for his fans. To me Next Semester and Backslide are really sad songs. I get goosebumps every time I replay both of them. |-/
In the video it seems like Tyler is resigned to things being the way they are, he seems defeated and at the end is like yep, here we go again. Not even outwardly annoyed, just, meh.
