I met Travis at Warped Tour 1999, he was hanging out side of stage on the ground doing rudimentary snare drum warmups, traditional grip at an insane tempo. He was originally a marching band snare drummer and it really shows, drum line was and still is some of the best forms of percussion with the most advanced stuff. Chad Sexton from 311 is also a drum line player from back in the day.

I find that you can use pretty standard wrist technique until about 230 - 240 bpm and then you hit a wall where you really have to learn some of the more advanced techniques like Moeller. But if you aren't going to be playing or soloing extended 32nd note phrases faster than 120bpm just wrist suffices after alot a practice.

At 58, full of Psoriatic Arthritis, and Folsom Lake Blues, trying to revisit these speeds has resulted in wood-stickles dangling from the ceiling like ice-circles! But I do get some relief when I top 60BPM and full woody!”

Slow. The key is playing very, very, slow and scrutinizing every technical flaw. Once you do, the speed is simply muscle memory. (Unsolicited advice)

For anyone starting to learn any instrument, the biggest things are confidence and relaxing. If you tense up, it’s not gonna sound nice and fluent and if you’re nervous, you’re more likely to mess up. It doesn’t matter how good you are, own what you can do and have fun. I used to be so nervous and tense playing, and it never got me far. Once you get comfortable and confident, that’s where the real progress lies.

That trad grip is always in the left hand, obviously this vid is reversed, it comes from marching over a hundred years ago when drums slung over the shoulder and hang off the left side of your body, the left hand play traditional grip allowed you to play the drum in the position much easier than you could with matched grip.. try it with your imaginary drum angled & hanging by your left hip 🖖🏼

I love how practical this lesson is. It gets directly to the point of pulling off whatever you need to get around the kit. It's not any rare rudiment to "memorize". It's three tips to pull off about anything you run into.
