It runs like a deere lol! It is a nice saw, Im working on getting my hands on it since I fell in love with it nursing it back to life :) Im attached to it now hahah thanks for spending time on the channel and watching the video! I appreciate it!
Good morning Jay! Well done! It’s humming nicely now. Real smooth running now. I’ve got an old Poulan saw I need to nurse back to health. This video gave me some good ideas on how to go about it.
Alton! Glad you like it! I was so happy when it roared back to life! I’ll be cutting with it this week don’t you worry! Please follow the channel so you can see! Thanks for watching!
Great job! Every time I see a good mechanic like you adjusting a carburetor, I see a wizard. I never got the talent to tune up a carburetor... BTW, you may want to grease the bearing on the clutch/sproket. While spinning at the end, we could hear it was running fairly dry. Thanks for sharing Jay!
Joe! Thank you for the kind words as always! You say I am a wizard? LOL there is no witchcraft or wizardry to tuning a saw lol you just have to listen to what its telling you! If you hear it bog then rule of thumb is 1/4 turn and rev it and see what it does. Generally you want to find the max RPMs on the high jet then back it OFF a quarter turn ( so you dont blow it haha) some old school saws you can wind right out till they explode haha. for the low jet you wanna set it where it doesnt bog and has good power through the first 1/3 of the rpms. If you go back and watch the 12:10-12:25 ish mark youll see me play with the low jet and at first it bogged and wouldnt rev up so I turned in a 1/4-1/2 turn in and it woke up! You will hear/feel when you get that sweet spot! I can make a video of tuning a saw if you need me too! Just let me know! Good point on greasing the sprocket, there was no oil flowing around the chain so good point to add some grease if I am not running a chain and bar! Thanks again Joe!
So far the carb on my small engines are doing fine. If only I could set my Case 430 tractor a little bit better. If ever the carb is the problem. When cold and humid (yeah, that is where I have a doubt about electrical issue), then it takes a while before I get good power. BTW, the chain oil does not go to this bearing. I really mean the clutch bearing and not the bearing at end of the bar chain. I might suggest to take a look at this link if you don't know what I mean. Thanks! th-cam.com/video/QqbkhHw8dgE/w-d-xo.html
How's she goin'? Huskys are good saws. You did a nice job on this and getting it started was a job!!! Setting the idle and high speed is a tricky task and you nailed it. Nice going!!!
Mike! Appreciate it! It runs like a charm! Largest saw ive ran and I cant wait to get her into some wood! Tomorrow I will get her cutting, dont worry Ill have a video on it! it is always tricky sometimes to get the settings right but the saw will tell you what it needs, its about listening and feeling how its running and getting that sweet spot! Thanks for watching!
Hey there Jay! Hope you had a great weekend. The saw sounded great when you got through with it. I thought you may have to go into the carb. but like you said the PB Blaster had it a little flooded. I love that PB Blaster, been using it about 17 or 18 years. You have the same fence in your back yard as I do. I put mine up about 10 years ago as a privacy fence to the next door neighbors. Hope you have a great day buddy!
Bruce! Hope you had a great weekend as well! I was SO pumped that it came back to life, I was assuming it would of course cause I was told it was a good runner! I was happy I didnt have to get into the carb, this video goes to show you that something stored properly will come back to life with minimal effort! Partly why I had so much trouble was the PB blaster lol but my old neighbor and mentor used to say "Id rather change plugs than pistons" so thats my mentality is Id rather over oil something and flood it/foul a plug than seize it up! I LOVE pb blaster as well, it works so well I would recommend it to anyone who does anything mechanical, it penetrates well and also burns cleaner than engine oil, if I oiled this motor with engine oil Id still be pulling it hahah! Plus the pb blast at first start up (white smoke) helps lubricate everything right away for the first critical seconds it starts! I like the white fencing, it helps hide the wood piles, looks good when your pulling up to the house, and the opening in the middle is access to the outdoor wood boiler in the winter time! Have a great week Bruce!
Glad this helped! If you get anything that sat for a while your better off over oiling like I did and nursing it back to health slowly! I might make a video on how to buy a used chainsaw but well see! They are relatively simple machines but like any project they can sometimes be expensive lol thanks for watching!
Nice job Jay! I love my Husky. They are really good saws. Can last a long time and do a lot of work if you do the maintenance regularly. Have a good week!!
John! They seem solid! I havent had many saws besides my Echo and old Mcculloch and this things a powerhouse! I agree with you, anything will last if you take care of it! Have a great week to you as well! Thanks for coming by!
I have the same saw and there is deff an idle screw under the high low screws. Also I would run 32 to1 in that saw. Been running mine for years that way and never had a prob. Lastly you should deff tune the saw with the bar and chain on.
Hey Matt! I did notice the idle after I was done filming lol The saw rips! Ive re-tuned obv since this video I was just getting a baseline setting! Ive tuned it in the wood like most guys do and it rips now! I put a 28 inch Oregon bar on it with skip tooth and she cranks! Check out my other videos to see it! Please subscribe!
@@HomesteadJay I was at my friends house and saw the 257 laying on its side in some tall grass it had been there for month's I asked him why he left it there he said it was junk and said i could have it. I took it home put fresh gas in it clean the carb and it fired right up! Absolute awesome saw. I willl deff check out your others videos.
Hey Matt! Wow that’s sad someone would leave a vintage saw out abandoned like that. It’s quite powerful and handy! It blows though fuel haha but it’s like a hot rod! You don’t buy it to save gas LOL glad you subscribed to the channel! Hope to see you comment on future videos’
Awesome vid! Be careful revving it up and tuning without a bar and chain on there. Tuning will be different with a bar and chain on there. Without bar and chain, sprocket could fly off and hits that gasoline can and kaboom!!! No bueno...
J, There is a retaining clip that holds the cluth on so it wont go anywhere! You are correct the bar and chain adds restriction (obviously) but to get basics you can start here! Tuning in the wood is the best thing to do but thats more advanced.
Hmmm I’ll have to look at it again! The other half dozen saws I’ve had or worked on it was always right under the air filter! Thanks for watching! Please subscribe!
Depends which way up the carb is mounted. Metering side up, like in a 257, it's below the mixture screws. Anyway the black plastic tuning guide should lead straight to it.
I havent seen or ran the 450 ranchers but they seem like good units! I am happy with this Husky for sure, I feel all older saws were built beefier, this one is heavier lol its all cast not a lick of plastic on it besides the air filter cover. Sort of like old cars lol they were all steel and weighed triple compared to new plastic composite cars haha! I love nostalgia regardless of what it is! Something about old school stuff Thanks for watching!
Yeah thats a good point! I want to get another saw that can use the same style chain! I run a powercut 3/8 oregon chain and it would be SO much easier to run two saws with 20" bars that run the same chain!
Great vid, thakn you so much!! I have been running my 257 (I call her the workhorse) alongside a smaller stihl and love them both... I was thinking of using the 257 as a sawmill, putting a bigger bar and ripping chain... what are yr thoughts? is the 257 big enough and any recommendations on bar size? I am still fairly new to the 'chainsaw scene' so feel free to talk to me like a child lol.
Hey Nick! I’m glad you like your 257! I have a 28inch bar on mine and I specifically use it for slashing brush and bucking logs so I don’t have to bend over with the short bars. My plan was to try and mill with it as well for dimensional lumber. I don’t know it would do for milling I wanna say with the correct milling chain it would be good for pine dimensional lumber but idk how it would mill on hardwood. The 257 has good power but I think it could mill hardwoods but it would be slower for sure! Hope this helps brother! Please subscribe if you haven’t yet!
💥 Very nice, runs like a champ now. That will be a nice chainsaw for either you or someone. Way to bring it back to life.
Keep on tractoring!

Very helpful video. I've been looking at used saws but scared I won't know what to do with it. This boosts the confidence a little 😁

I have the same saw blown up 16 years later and a 20$ piston ring and it's still going strong love my husky saws.

I have the 570 and it's 13 years and three hurricanes old. lol It still runs like the day I bought it! Really pleased with it!
I am getting good vibes for husqvarnas! I see top loggers running them and got good vibes so I will deff try and get my hands on it!

The idle screw is the hole underneath the high and low screws

I second. I have a 257 I use every week. There is definitely an idle adjustment under the low and High
Depends which way up the carb is mounted. Metering side up, like in a 257, it's below the mixture screws. Anyway the black plastic tuning guide should lead straight to it.
I have a newer Husky (450 Rancher) but it's been very reliable so far. I bet the old ones are even better
I havent seen or ran the 450 ranchers but they seem like good units! 450 is ok, but I wish I went with the 455. more common link length, etc. (3/8 vs .325)
Yeah thats a good point! I want to get another saw that can use the same style chain! I run a powercut 3/8 oregon chain and it would be SO much easier to run two saws with 20" bars that run the same chain!
@@HomesteadJay so be warned! 450 is .325. 455 steps up to .365 ;)
Hmm thanks for the tip! I have to see what this 257 is! If its the same chain as my oregeon powercut ill be in luck :)
The idle screw is about an 1"-1 1/2" below the high low adjusters.
Yes thank you. At the time I couldn’t see it for some reason hahah
