- Hi Everybody, its Time for another Commander Deck tech. Today we're looking at Jon Irenicus, Shattered One from the Battle for Baldur's Gate.
Jon doesn't need his creatures, do you want them? Give your opponents big threatening beaters with a notable downside then set them lose on your other foes. Other players will only be allowed the creatures you give to them, but they shouldn't complain much as they will be very effective at taking out your other foes. Once we've given out enough threats, we clear the way for them with controlling magic and mass destruction spells. Sit back and laugh while everyone fights each other, with the weapons that you have given them.

I added a few things to help when it gets to 1 v 1 at the end, "Homeward Path" and from MOTM: Staff of Compleation and Archfiend of the Dross
I am highly considering building this or something very similar myself and I have a lot of questions. Thanks for sharing helpful wincons!
Is your deck otherwise the same?
How's it been performing (% win)?
How's the table been responding? (salty, enjoy it, etc.?)
Last but not least, which cards did you remove to add these suggestions?
@@Lppoley
The deck is a bit different, I don't bother with as many one off donate effects to get in some of the UB good stuff cards, Rhystic Study, Capsize, Demonic Tutor, Phyrexian Arena etc. but it's personal preference, the core of the deck is Jon + Undercosted drawback creatures. I also put in Heartless Summoning, super good for our deck.
It has been performing lousy. I won the first game and then my play group got scared and have dogpiled me ever since when I break it out, so like 8% win rate?
The table loves it. It's prime puppetmaster when player 2 is angry at player 3 for being goaded into being attacked with one of my creatures and I have never had more fun at a table when the plan works. But these days it almost always makes two players target me, whoever I give the creature to, and whoever that creature is attacking both decide they don't like me.
I can't remember offhand what I cut, I think it was rust elemental for the archfiend. Just a basic land for the homeward path. I don't run any swords either so that's an easy cut for the staff. Never sleep on All is dust though. Best card in the deck and it's not even close.
@@ELKvideoify wow, didn't expect that detailed of a reply, but appreciate it! He's on my list of maybe commanders, but this certainly helps a lot!
Out of curiosity, what are your favorite commanders you run that are enjoyable but also fairly powerful, don't have a tendency to draw out games way to long, and also don't have a tendency of getting totally ganged up on all the time?
@@Lppoley For power/win without taking forever/no dogpile go mono color the commanders are just less threatening (I Highly recommend Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed if your budget allows or your table allows proxies).
It can be literally anything, though mono black is real good at getting up big mana.
Cabal Coffers + Urborg Tomb of Yawgmoth
Extraplanar Lens + Snow covered swamps (in case your opponents also run black)
Magus of the Coffers, Nirkana Revenant, and Crypt Ghast
Then just have fun playing the rest of the deck in whatever flavour or theme you like. Zombie, Vampires, Demons... humans? Chainer, Dementia Master is a fun reanimator/steal your opponents creatures out of their graveyards type affair if you mix in some group mill.
Isshin, Two Heavens as One (WRB) is on my next to build list. Three colors is always nice, will let you play around with anything attack trigger related (off the top of my head: Djeru and Hazoret - Velomachus Lorehold - Winota, Joiner of Forces - Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal, Aurelia, the Warleader (two extra combats, but only one untap). Anthem of Rakdos will also give any creature +4/+0 for two life and double that damage with no cards in hand.
Nice deck tech, thnx!
Cool intro btw
I was just about to build this. Great video my favorite is the budget substitution recommendations.
Love the intro with the Shadows of Amn dungeon start!
I enjoy the ability of passing Jon himself to opponents on the promise they will give him back. This way he gets big quick and attacks twice per turn rotation
How can you trust anyone
I dont see many deals broke in Commander
I would strongly suggest against high cmc creatures .You want to keep up protection for Jon at all times. Better to donate a 3cmc and keep up countermagic
Oh my god, I need a deck list for this.
I love the addition of koskun falls super deep cut
I enjoy the card a lot and feel it needs a little more love. When I was testing the deck I kept getting hated on for some reason, so I decided to add a little more defense. Glad you like it!!!
Fun intro!
because of how cumulative upkeep works with phyrexian soulgorger you can just choose not to pay the upkeep and nothing is sacrificed
I'm making a version ofthis for a friend for secret Santa. Im second guessing playing against this.
That’s not how Jon + soulgorger would work.
Hi friend, I understand the confusion as its cumulative upkeep and part of the payment for it is to sacrifice a creature. But what is the consequences of not fulfilling that payment? It says sacrifice, but it can't be sacrificed because of the clause given to it by Jon. Is there something else I'm missing? Admittedly smarter players won't sacrifice anything to satisfy the upkeep cost, in which case they have a goaded 10/10.
@@allconsumingnerdom3397 this guy explain very well how jon and soulgorger work ( th-cam.com/video/HcqEGdFuPFA/w-d-xo.html ) also the not super nice thing with plague reaver is that if you want to give it goaded you have to sac all your creature because both trigger are put on the stack at same time, that made me remove both card from my version of the deck
@@allconsumingnerdom3397Cumulative upkeep is a may. So it will continue to add age counters. If you decline, the permanent is sacrificed. However a 'cannot be sacrificed' ability takes precedence and so it remains in play. Pretty good to give away a 3 mana 10/10 beater though.
im just hoping that by building this deck my friends will still actually play with me lmfao
the only problem is when the game becomes 1vs1. Then all the goaded creatures start attacking you.
