      This mainly happens for various of reasons but some main ones would be..
      Too hot so the buds aborted.
      Not mature enough so they abort buds.
      The genetics of that variety may just be a variety that aborts often.
      May need a fertilizer with higher potassium and calcium.

      @@GraftingDragonFruit Thanks for the reply. In my case, these plants have been bearing fruits year after year until recently. The fertilizer I used hasn't changed, and it is hotter this year than last. However, I think that the plants have passed their maturity and productive stage. Could that be the case? I have had these plants for about 8 years. How old are your plants?

    New subscriber and proud first time dragonfruit owner here. I'm binge watching your vids. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience so generously. Question: My 1 yr old Purple Haze is producing a flower bud. Didn't expect it this soon as I am still trying to grow the main stem toward the canopy. Will flower bud delay the grow of the main stem? Also I don't have another plant to cross pollinate yet. Some nurseries say Purple Haze is self pollinating and others say it is self sterile. Not sure what to do.

    I have my dragon fruit plants budding for the first time, 11 days ago. Got them on a trellis last year and followed your direction on the soil content and occasional adding of compost and monitoring the moisture content. We here in NorCal are having a terrible heat wave (100 + 30 days, this week 110) while the budding began. There are 3 buds on the growth from last year but 2 of the 3 are yellowing. Could it be from the heat or needing to check the nutrient balance? Not sure how to check the nutrients.

    I planted 8 cuttings last summer and now have 10 flowers forming on my fully developed plants. I was so excited to see my first flowers open up and was ready to collect the pollen by brushing out and applying to the stigma. To my surprise, the pollen was not a powder at all and I could not brush it out. It was solid threads. The flower opened and closed in one day so I may have lost the opportunity to pollinate. I did physically pull some pollen threads and place inside the stigma. Does anyone have an idea on what is going on with my flowers?

I followed your videos to learn how to cut and plant the cutting she gave me and it has exploded in growth!! It’s nearly doubled in size now and I am over the moon! I’ve learned so much from your videos, thanks so much for making this so easy for those of us that are now addicted to growing DF! My question, (my apologies if you’ve already covered this in a video I haven’t seen yet) is that I live in zone 7 (Central Virginia) and it gets extremely cold here. Would you please advise on the Ecuador Palora species please - under my care they seemed to take much longer to reach maturity comparing to Vietnam Red. Hi Cindy, if you haven’t already placed your EP in full sun then go ahead and bring them to an area that has direct sunlight. They do very well with the heat and thrive in it. EP usually produces fruits later in the season so you’ll see them pop up around October.

    Nice buds!!! My plants are having their older stems dry out despite me watering them everyday. But the new branches are good. Is this because there are too many branches sucking juice from the lower branches??? I heard you talk about this in another video

    • @GraftingDragonFruit
      @GraftingDragonFruit  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Watering everyday can actually give them root shock so it won’t take anymore water. Let the soil dry back 2 inches from the top before you water. They need oxygen and can suffocate if too much water is within the roots. Also, heat can dry them up if it’s very hot. I use an umbrella to combat the 90F+ until it cools down to 80s

    • @GraftingDragonFruit
      @GraftingDragonFruit  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It could mean that bees are coming to visit early and now know you as a pollen source so they collect them leaving very little. Another reason could be the plant didn’t have enough energy to produce pollen only enough energy to bloom. Keeping up with fertilizing will help ensure you get the pollen you need. Try tying a mesh bag over your flowers before it blooms this will help with bees coming and can’t get in.

      Are they getting to bloom before they fall off? Or is it buds just falling off completely before getting to bloom?

      They can’t survive in the desert. They are tropical cactus and require lots of water and weather in 75-85F

    I have a mature Purple Haze which has flowered for the last 2 seasons. It flowers very well but no fruit. Does this variety require cross pollinating? I tried to pollinate the flowers, It is sometimes covered with bees but no fruit. I also have the red variety that flowers and fruits very well with no help from me.

    • @GraftingDragonFruit
      @GraftingDragonFruit  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Purple Haze is a self sterile variety that requires cross pollination. When it blooms pollinate it with your red varieties pollen. This will ensure it to bear fruit successfully.

    Richard I learn so much from you. Question: when I water or fertilize my DF I see a bunch of ants coming out from the pots. Should I focus on killing those ants? Cuz they can’t be good that they ate there. I’ve seen videos of people using Borax to kill them using a bait box.

    • @GraftingDragonFruit
      @GraftingDragonFruit  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ants usually don’t harm dragon fruit. They tend to feed on the dew from the new growth and buds. Unless they are chomping on your branches or buds then o wouldn’t worry about them.

  • @amwangiyo
    @amwangiyo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    please let me know if your dragon trees are self pollinated or self fertilized. Mine had 2 fruits for the first time, and I did pollinate 2 flowers with the brush. the second time. 2 flowers bloomed, but I did not do anything because I saw many bees hovering them. But no fruits. By the way, we live in Pasadena. and no dragon fruit trees near by. Take care!

    My dragon fruit plants aren't loaded with buds- they only get two or three buds and all of those fall off and I have never gotten any fruit- why is that?

    • @GraftingDragonFruit
      @GraftingDragonFruit  ปีที่แล้ว

      These are some things to consider,
      1. Is it getting enough sun?
      2. Is it too hot over 90-100F? This will cause buds to drop. Provide 30% shade cover if its too hot.
      3. Dont over water, too much water also makes them abort. Let the soil dry back 2 inches from top before you water.
      4. Are you fertilizing them? Give them a organinc bloom booster. This will help keep buds as well and even produce more.
      5. Also, if it isnt mature enough they will also abort buds.

    So I have a new cutting that just started rooting in water..I noticed a bud/flower. Will that result on aborting?? Or should I just plant it in soil and wait and see. I feel so sad removing it :( it's the first time I've ever seen a new bud ever. I posted a video of a new growth in my chennel. if you'd like to view. Thanks

    Hi, I hope you can help me because I can’t find anything online when I search for it. I have a Vietnamese white plant that just formed it’s very first flower. The fruit started to grow, but I did not realize the flower had to be removed so quickly after blooming. I left it on for about a week and it started to rot. When I pulled the flower off, the stigma came off and there were some maggots where the stigma was. I scraped everything away and it seemed to dry out well in the Florida sun. However, the fruit has stopped growing since then. It has been the same size for about two weeks now. This is my first fruit and I’m not sure what to do. Is it normal for growth to stop like this? Or should I remove the fruit and allow the plant to form another flower? Thank you in advance!

    • @GraftingDragonFruit
      @GraftingDragonFruit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When this happens it’s because of one main reason.
      Your dragon fruit is a self-sterile variety. It’s not being pollinated to be fertilized to se fruit.
      The solution to this is to grow another variety that’s different from the one you have and use their pollen once it’s mature and has a flower. This is called cross-pollination, you can find all these videos on my channel.

    Hey Richard, thanks for the super helpful videos btw! Question fairly related to this video. I have a PG that has budded for the first time this year ton of buds initially about 50. Many aborted, but 25 flowered, kept it 2-3 per branch, most had only one per. I was able to get few types of pollen from a buddy, Ab, S8, mixed, and Rixford red pollen, I actually had pollinated all with each type. Not a single one set fruit can't understand why? Pollen was good was fresh and kept in fridge. What would cause them all to abort? It's about 2 1/2 yo. Is that normal for first year buds? TIA

    • @GraftingDragonFruit
      @GraftingDragonFruit  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Taron, when you got the pollen did you let it dry overnight before storing it in the fridge? If it’s still wet it can make the pollen not viable anymore. Also use silica packets to help pull out the moisture. This can be a reason why it didn’t accept the pollen because it wasn’t viable or stored correctly.

    • @taronheath3471
      @taronheath3471 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GraftingDragonFruit Thank you for taking the time to answer this for me! I am almost 100% sure he didn't set the pollen out overnight to dry before storing in the fridge. I do know he wasn't using desicant packets in them. I also collected a ton of pollen from my PG, and PH and didn't let dry first, however I did add the packets to the airtight containers before storing in fridge. Do you think that it's likely not good at all from doing this? When taking out to use I would let it come to room temp before opening. Wish I had this info prior, and didn't ruin my supply.

    • @taronheath3471

      They will start pushing buds when they are ready. There's no telling before hand unfortunately. Had all of mine 2 + years super healthy and huge; this year they all budded all of a sudden. Soon as one pops up there are definitely more to follow. Keep with it, keep it happy, it will surprise you one season for sure! Happy growing 🤙
