I think it's time we stop thinking of orangutans as merely "animals" and start thinking of them as a sibling species. They are more like us than most people want to admit.
It used to be that "animals don't use tools, only humans do". Now, there's plenty of evidence of animals using (and even making) tools. Besides primates, I saw a vid where a crow, trying to get a treat out of tube, took a stick and trimmed the stick down (pulled off the pieces poking out from the main stick) to the correct size to fit the tube so it could push out the treat. That's a step beyond the chimpanzee picking up the stick to knock down the banana it can't reach (another experiment).
I once found a fuzzy, silver-green plant growing in the central coast area of California that smelled like fresh pine sawdust when the leaves were rubbed. Following the traditional standards for determining potential edibility, I tasted it. It was not bitter, caused no irritation and did not provoke salivation. I then chewed a small piece and immediately my tongue went numb. I spit it out and did not attempt further edibility tests. I later looked through many plant guides to try to identify it but never found a clear answer. It was low growing with small, furry, silver-grey leaves distributed not very densely along branching stems. It was growing in sandy soil in late spring. Any help in identifying this plant would be appreciated.
The beautiful novel 'Apes of the Wildfire' suggests the culture of orangutans may be so developed they even express themselves artistically. After seeing this it seems possible!
I image with 150 orangutans that would require a lot of cameras. Mr Beast recently recorded 100 people in a contest. it required 300 cameras, a world record, the most ever used for a single production. So they'd need 450 cameras. That would require several millions of dollars. Be reasonable.
Some day in the distant future, orangutans will be talking about how there used to be a race of super orangutans that once lived here on Earth before them and eventually left. Most orangutans won't believe it...
Might be the first time seen by Max Planck Sanctuary staff but wasn't the first time ever as the behavior has been seen before at another sanctuary. Believed to be mimicking vet staff but with herbs.
yeah well, maybe that might work for the orangutan but not for a human because maybe the orangutans saliva, when mixed with the juice of that plant, creates the perfect medicine for a wound but because human saliva probably has a completely different makeup it probably wouldn’t work for a human
I will say the same thing i just said to the other person who asked this dumb question. 150 orangutans that would require a lot of cameras. Mr Beast recently recorded 100 people in a contest. it required 300 cameras, a world record, the most ever used for a single production. So they'd need 450 cameras. That would require several millions of dollars. No science team has that kind of money. Though it would have been nice if they had at least got their cell phones out.
So, can no medical doctor attest to the medicinal value of the plant? If they cannot, and it actually turns out to have a medicinal value for healing such wounds, could we say that he surpasses the medical knowledge of medical doctors in such environments? So much is lacking here. What species is the plant? Was it just one type? Why count the minutes like that and tell us... seven? Is that more important info than the whereabouts, the age of the ape, the relation with the group?
Another report said he's 30 yrs old & was in a fight w/ another male. They reported that the wound on face & in mouth closed & healed w/ in a week & was never infected.
I don't know why this is such huge news. Except maybe to actually teach people that pharma doesn't have your best interest in mind with pushing drugs on you. 🤷♂️
Of course they are not humans.m, nor distance relatives. But one major think we have in common for sure is, we all have the same creator! Animals were given a level of intelligence. They have emotions and thought processes
Nobody claimed it was new. The point is that now there is evidence that can be used in scientific research. Unless you were capable of conducting a study, what you’ve seen doesn’t matter any more than big foot, martians, or a yeti.
So annoying on several levels... First I didn't see anything anything, juice or pulp being applied in their video. Secondly, in the wild state an open wound closing would be the same as a wound healing.. I think they were just prattling on without watching the video or thinking about the words they were saying.. typical news,
I don't understand what value the second speaker provided to the discussion. He repeated the same thing the woman said. Was it because a man's point of view is more believable?

Absolutely incredible
Animals are a whole lot smarter than people give them credit for
people credit animals with being intelligent all the time
Clearly intelligent behavior - clearly a human like trait. Treat them as such

Dr. Rakus is in the office. Please book an appointment with the receptionist.
I wonder if the plant had an effect on his mouth that clued him in. Perhaps it made his tongue numb?

Not surprising. I seem to recall a similar account of chimps doing the same many years back.
