TurboGrafx games? Let’s go. This is the best channel.
YES. This is actually TG16/PCE game number 2! He did Beyond Shadowgate a while back
@@waylonoconner9121 Wow. Even better!
I'm glad you left out a few details from Jim Cummings' voice acting resume. We'd be here all day. Though, I will admit to being marginally disappointed you didn't mention that he was EVERY male character in Army Men: Sarge's Heroes.
He's a video game VA legend.
Darkwing Duck!
Also Michael Bell? I thought Dark Fact sounded like Raziel.
2:00 Amazing that Adol made it to port on a ship. You know how rare that is for him?
Dude is banned from all cruise liners.
I ove that his constant ship wrecks becomes an actual plot point that gets him in trouble in Ys 9.
I'm pretty sure that changed that for the DS remaster and the ship crashed.
I wonder how many times Adol has woken up on the sand and thought, "Damn it, not again". I could see someone making a joke of a leery Adol standing on the gangplank gently putting just his toe aboard the deck, only to have the ship immediately drop beneath the waves, people screaming as it drags them down with it.
I thought the same thing. I hadn't played the original in years and had last played only the remake and in that version, his ship sank and he was found on a beach (surprise, surprise). Despite my loving criticism, I love the franchise.
@@roberthunter479 This reminds me of a great joke in Ys 9. You complete the optional objectives and make Adol the best sword in the game. Then, you're prompted with a choice as Adol gazes upon this ultimate weapon. One of your options is to have Adol think to himself something to the effect of "I'm probably gonna lose this one too". To which the other charcters respond by asking Adol why he has this far-off look in his eye. I never laughed so hard at a self-aware joke in my entire life.
The priests raised an entire city into the sky to protect the people of Ys from the calamity occurring down below. It's not hard to believe they would have ways to try to conceal themselves from the demons so that they wouldn't give chase. Great video btw. You are going to usher in new fans to the wonderful world of Ys and it's many sequels.
I was absolutely not expecting you to do a TurboGrafx game, let alone a TurboCD title! I don't have a lot of experience with the Ys series, but I do have some experience with Falcom's titles. I have vivid (and painful) memories of Legacy of the Wizard, and (much less painful) memories of Faxanadu, both on the NES. Thanks for doing this.
Wow! I wasn't expecting this. I played the SMS game in the late 80s and picked this up when it released. One of my favorites.
Right. I played it on the SMS. When I got TG16 I never got the CD. So I missed out on this version.
My favorite piece of Ys knowledge is that Dark Fact is just like, a guy. He has family with the last name Fact and they mostly have normal names like Hugo. His first name is actually "dark".
But he is the direct descendant of priest Cain Fact from Ys Origin (and by extension either Hugo or Toal, both of whom accepted demonic power from Dalles). So he's already from a bloodline of exceptionally powerful magic users.
I would argue they mostly have silly names. Cain decided to rename himself 'darm', which is silly, then there's "toal', another strange name, and of course 'dark'...
Hugo is a relatively normal name but He's a confused child where he's an insufferable jerk who SHOULD be a villain but somehow isn't...except he kinda is in the canon route.
So yeah, it started normal with Cain, but then one day he decided 'I hereby declare to rename myself something weird, and all my descendants will forever be cursed to have weird names too! And he missed hugo somehow. Probably cuz Hugo was a magical prodigy and used the famous fact shield magic to avoid the curse.
@@Ghalion666hugo is my favorite character in the series, actually! He is socially tone deaf but he has a good heart, i think
@@birdonline2751 He's also got the most devastating sick burns.
@@-Keith-so it sounds like you know your shit about Ys. That's fucking sick, I just want you to know that. Anyway, are Hugo and chick there with the axe plus claw guy related to Adol? I never beat Origins on Vita as I used Hugo and wanted a sword but he had just magic and that turned me off. I think the chick got a sword but I hate playing as girls in games so just never beat it.
This is a great place to start this game series because it allows you to Ys into it.
Nice
I've never seen or heard about this game before this video. Thank you for showing me this
Ys 1-4 (4 is a fan translation) are amazing. The music alone makes them the definitive versions of all of them. There's a sound setting you need to change in your emulator (if you're going that way) though, or you can't hear the voice acting. There's a volume you need to either lower or crank up.
I'd agree with the previous statement and add Ys IV on the Turbo but not Ys IV the SNES. Falcom is really good with their music.
@@roberthunter479 I was specifically talking about the Turbo CD versions of the games though it looks like I didn't actually say that (oops).
I've never finished IV SNES, but hey it's there if you want it and it's gotta be better than V....
I feel like this guy knows every game that i start playing. First link's awakening, ff4, and now this? Glad to see a new upload
He watches all of us.
@@iami3rian394 He watches all of us? Gee, he did have that comment about the Red Wings distributing presents to the good little girls and boys toward the beginning of the recent FF2(IV) walkthrough... I'm starting to wonder if maybe he just might be Santa Claus. 🤔🎅
@@neutraltral8757 Santa or a saint.
He's definitely magical.
I remember when the Ys games were all over the game magazines back in the day (especially after Wanderers From Ys was featured in both Nintendo Power and GamePro). I never had the opportunity to play any of them myself, but I did play the heck out of Lagoon, which was _very_ inspired by Ys.
Dude thanks for these videos. I don’t have the patience to play these classic games but I love watching you play them 😊
Fun fact, not only is the actor who played "Sandman" in this game but also the voice actor for Spiderman from the 80s cartoon "Spiderman and his Amazing Friends"
Just stumbled on this channel and my god, it's like watching an old strategy guide from the 90s. Subbed.
Great Port of a great game. I've always described Ys 1 and 2 as The Legend of Zelda meets Daytona USA 🏁
Amazing comparison 😂
I mean, that would be the Turbografx game “final lap twin”
No really. The first Ys 1 and 2 (even the 4 on Super Famicom) remind me more Hylide. Zelda on NES to SNES have animation for swinging the sword while Ys 1, 2 and 4 doesn't. It look so primitive if you compare Ys 1 & 2 to Zelda, mostly ALTTP. So isn't factually true.
@@MidoseitoAkage Hey man it's just a fun description. Not something people expect to be "factually true". You don't swing a sword in Daytona USA but that is what the bump combat and CD quality music makes me think of when I play 🏁🏁🏁
I'd give that title to Shining Wisdom, both for the "gear" system and for having an actual Daytona Car item you can use
Duuuuude! My favorite TH-camr doing a walk-through of one of my favorite games! Thank you!
I played Y's on sms more than 30 years ago!!! :( I was 7 and in hindsight, the fact that I got to Dorm tower is astonishing as I had NO idea what was going on lol. I was never able to get to the final boss until years later, nor did I know there was a book 2.
Lastly, everyone should play the remakes on steam, they are amazing.
Thank you for this!
Now you're speaking my language!
I've played through at least one version of every Ys game - glad to see my favorites in the series get some love.
I've only ever played Wanders from Ys 3 on the SNES, but I immediately recognized the track that began playing @ 2:38. That track played every time the player entered an area from the map, and would continue playing until you entered the area proper.
Also interesting to see the UI remain the same throughout the older titles, despite being on separate consoles. Speaking of which, the gameplay for the first 2 Ys games reminds me a lot of another game from the same era. Lagoon for the SNES looks and plays a lot like this.
Ys 3 is my jam. Never played any other but fascinated would conserving checking them out.
I just stumbled upon your channel and I watched this video in one sitting!!! I love Ys I and II. I actually own the same PC engine Duo you have! I'd go so far as to say that Ys I and II are definitely in my top 10 favorite video games of all time. From the voice acting to the music to the gameplay it's such an amazing game. When I finally beat it 2 years ago the ending with Feena really tugged at my heart strings and sealed it for me. I haven't had a game that made me feel that way in a very long time. Thank you so much for uploading this video. I'm really looking forward to seeing the next one on Ys II. Have a great day!
The Ys series is one of my favorite series of games. I love that you've now covered the first two games in the series! Awesome video, keep up the great work!
Sooooo happy you are giving this game some much needed and deserved love
Oh boy I don't remember if I requested this or not but I'm really happy you finally covered Ys Books 1 & 2!!
I personally modded Ys 1 & 2 Chronicles to play the Turbografx OST and it's definitely the definitive way to play it in a modern style!
Thank you. This has been a franchise that I've been meaning to get into. Haven't had time, and my backlog keeps growing.
nice! TurboG content is always welcome!!
This is very cool. My introduction to the Ys series, and probably the same for most players in the US at the time, was Wanders from Ys III on SNES.
I was one of the fortunate few to have a Turbo CD and this very game back in the early 90s. All of my friends were in disbelief that there was actual talking in a video game at the time and that it was on a CD of all things. We even wrote a letter to NEC with some ideas we had for the system and the CEO even wrote us a reply. We were 100% fanboys of this system and the incredible RPGs it had. Please consider Cosmic Fantasy 2. I saved my allowance for a long time to get that game at Babbages.. all for the spicy shower scene (wink & a nod). Thanks again!
My older brother had got a Turbo CD, and Ys and Cosmic Fantasy 2 were the ones that wowed me too. I actually beat Ys book I and II, but I don't think I beat Cosmic Fantasy 2, it was much harder? So it would be nice to see it covered here as well!
@@hereticmoses CF2 was a massive boring grind, I'm surprised I managed to beat it, but the ending was pretty epic so it was worth it.
@@mikeydawise that's probably why I never beat it, I couldn't keep attention to grind. But in Ys I could put something on the directional pad and leave to level up haha
I never miss your videos when you post one. Even if I don’t like the game, I give it a full watch to get you that engagement. Thanks for your hard work.
Just wanted to thank you for being you and doing what you do. I appreciate you. I really enjoy your content and always look forward to watching your newest video.
Another awesome video. I had played about 3/4 through Ys 2 years ago. this inspired me to start over and just finished it.
This channel is ao awesome. I didn't even know these games existed!
The Ys series is so fantastic! Ys Origin, The Oath in Felgana and Ys:VII being among my favorites
7? You don't mean 8?
@@Ghalion666 7 is the last one I played. 8 and 9 are on the backlog though
Oh shoot! Ys! Love these games. Hope you end up covering Ys III too. I haven't played that one yet.
love the turbografx, great episode!
Never played this or heard of it, I just love this channel. 😀
I hate the bumping into enemies for combat, it runs counterintuitive to every other game we play. It also reminds me of Hylide which is terrible.
Two quick comments:
First, I love the treature box key mechanic. It's nice that you don't have to find indevidual keys to open most chests.
Secondly a question: Can you sell weapons and armor you don't need in order to get even more cash? Or is there a reason to keep it? Or does it just vanish when you equip an upgrade?
Excellent guide, as usual. Thanks for putting in such hard work to create these, UCBG.
I played through the Sega Master System version of Ys for the first time just last year. Overall, I really enjoyed it. The pacing is very good, and it does a lot of story telling with a relatively small number of non-dungeon areas in a way that makes them feel large and full. Vagullon was very frustrating -- I don't know if this was just the Master System port or if it affected others as well, but his hitbox seemed to be a pretty small area only around his feet, and he was only vulnerable for a few frames while fully in non-bat form. It does seem like there are some differences between the ports -- it feels like the bosses on the Master System took more hits than here. By the end of the Dark Dekt/Fact battle, I had about half of the platform left; I had to plan where on the platform I was going to hit him so as to not leave myself trapped. It was a brutal battle -- difficult without feeling unfair (unlike Vagullon, who did feel unfair).
The way XP worked on Master System, you had to max out your level for Vagullon to begin with. That would be the same as a low level run in the TurboGraphix version and thus yes, that has to be unfair
Great to see more Turbografx-16 love!
I had this game when I was a kid, along with my SuperGrafx, wish I still had both. Incredible game with amazing music.
Love this channel so much
I actually played this one back around 1990-1991 because my brother had gotten a summer job and bought a TurboCD system. I remember being blown away by the anime cut scenes and voice acting, felt cutting edge at the time. Great memories!
Wooot woooot ...adult version of Saturday morning cartoons!!!!
Nice. This will be a great watch. Love Ys.
i would definitely love to try this. this looks very interesting.
It's refreshing to hear someone pronouncing Ys correctly! lol
Love your videos! God, the final boss fight in the PC remake version of this is SO damn hard. Seems much more reasonable in this version.
Ys 3 is such a classic
The only channel I try to hit like on every video
I had the Turbograx CD player and this was my favorite game.
You can buy Ys book 1 and 2. on most cell phones.
Possibly my favorite RPG series ever!
The way this game is presented reminds me strongly of lunar the silver star. I guess that's a quality of early cd games in general, and not just these two.
I really love the TurboGrafx an unreasonable amount for almost zero reason.
Did I own a TG-16? No. Have I ever played Ys 1 & 2? No (but I did play Ys 3 for Genesis).
Did I watch this entire video? Hell yes.
Man I loved this episode, thank you. I wonder though if this is the same composer that did the NES Might and Magic music, the overworld seems very similar
Thank you so much childhood favorite
Can not wait for your Illusion of Gaia video.
Ohhh fudge, I played the Turbografx 16 version of this game long ago on Wii virtual console and I LOVED it, but I think I got stuck at the part where you need to use the Mask of Eyes. Thanks so much for making this guide, the Turbografx CD version looks (and sounds) WAAAY better--I sure hope they re-release it somewhere one day!! (Or maybe I'll try Ys Chronicles+ on Steam....)
Who here loves @UCanBeatVideoGames because of his super in-depth intros on the background of the games he helps us with?
Your guides make games Y'sy!
Thanks for doing another TG-16 CD game
Ys was considered one of the 3 legendary game franchises in Japan, along with Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. It's still very very popular.
Also, Wallcrusher Dogi is just as popular as Adol. If he's not in an Ys, it's considered to not be a canon game by fans
Legitimately one of my favorite game series of all time. I hope more of this series makes it onto this show. Haven't watched the video yet, but good luck against Dark Fact.
Post-watch edit: It's crazy how different the TGCD version is from Chronicles, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't frustrated at how easy Dark Fact is in this version (just me being salty about how much trouble he gave me in the Chronicles version). Great video! Can't wait for book 2.
Wow i have never heard of these games. Cool
BLAZING LAZERS next please!
Many thanks U.C.B.V.G.🤘
Excited to watch. Maybe we will get a neutopia and dungeon explorer 1&2 episode some day!
Oooooh! Ys! Actually took the trouble to play through the entire series lately, it has been an absolute blast! I actually beat Ys IX a day or two ago, concluding what is an EXCELLENT series, favorite is probably Ys VIII but 7, 9, Origins and Celceta are all excellent titles and the other ones are charming and pretty short to pick up and play. :)
Too bad Ys 5 is lost to time.
Im rrady for part 2 cant wait! Ive never made it this far.
I played Ys Book 1 on DOS back near release. When they started doing the modern PC re-releases, I finally got to play the entire game. Ys 3 was also fun, but the jump from 1 to 3 was a huge change in playstyle. I still prefer the first 3 over he modern releases.
YS, one of my favorit series!
Another UCBVG masterpiece two-parter? On one of the greatest 8-bit games ever? Sign me up!
One of the best games ever made, played the hell out of it on Master System then bought a Turbo Duo which included this, Gate of Thunder, Bonk, and Bomberman for free. So baffling how that console failed with 5 of the best games ever included for free in the early 90's.
Sorry I haven't been keeping up, but seeing TG-16/TGCD and Ys 1 & 2 made me flock to this one.
I hope Book 2 will come this weekend!
This used to be my favorite game. I loved it. Somehow my Turbo Graphics CD got away from me. Watching this really makes me jones for my old system. I can't wait for you to cover book 2. Cool , now Adol gets magic.
This is one of my favorite channels.
Great game. I love that they based the game on a lesser known legendary city than Atlantis. The music is among the best imo.
Wow, this soundtrack goes hard.
This soundtrack was amazing!
There was nothing that came anywhere close back then.
I've never heard of this game before. It looks pretty cool. The combat system is a little bit odd, but I like the graphics and soundtracks.
The soundtrack, when you get an important item, reminds me of "Metroid".
Looking forward book 2.
I've always liked the Ys series and good ol' Adol, who seems to have to save the world every few months. Though funnily enough my favorite is one of the few if not the only one Adol isn't in "Ys Origins" which as it says is a prequel to entire series.
Adol has a terrible habit of waking up on beaches after trashing his boat at sea. In Origin you can unlock him in the boss rush mode.
Origin is what got me into the series actually. I saw it in a shop in Taiwan while itching for a new Switch game, and despite thinking Ys sucked, it looked Zelda-ish so I figured it'd be okay at least and it wasn't expensive so why not.
Holy crap though, that game was awesome. I thought I didn't like it because my only previous experience with the series was Ys III on SNES which I rented and remembered just absolutely hating. I think I must have cheated and rushed through the game with god mode on or something because I remember getting through it in no time, and have vivid memories of Potato poop meteors from the final boss.
After playing Origin I played Ys 1 & 2 for Turbo CD, which led me to the dreaded Ys 3. The music was so good on 1 & 2 for Turbo that I had to stick with it for part 3. I loved part 3 this time around and kept wondering if I really did play it all those years ago, because it seemed different. I remembered just kind of aimlessly going to the right and having nothing to do until I got to the boss. Not so this time, but... potato poop meteors at the end.. .so I guess I really did get through it before.
Don't miss the Turbo's version of part 4, which is fan translated. I tried to play V after that but got bored real fast. I think I just went to Ys VIII after that, which I loved, but I thought the music was so weak compared to those Turbo CD games. Haven't played any others, though Ys 9 is in my stack of games I haven't played on the Switch yet.
The only Ys game I ever played was the 7th game. It was basically the PlayStation 4's verison of Legend of Zelda.
Try 8, it's an amazing improvement over 7. Someone here says they like 7 the most but I legit think they just did a typo or got their count wrong. I've never seen anyone who has played 8 who doesn't absolutely adore it over the others, not that the others are bad, 8 is just miraculously good.
Didnt play ys till the 4th one but played the remakes of the 1st 2 on pc and loved them
You ask all of these silly questions, than can easily be answered with one word... MAGIC!
How convinient, I bought a duo analogue and I was building a game backlog
Oh man. That 70's porno music from Darm tower really brings back memories.
Also, I recommend everyone, who hasn't seen it before, go and TH-cam the cinematic scene between Ys 1 and Ys 2 and crank it up! It's so badass.
6:35 Dark Fact was voiced by Micheal Bell. Who voiced Duke, Xamot, and others ion GI Joe. as well as Prowl, Sideswipe, and Swoop on Transformers.
Oh, and the last boss of this version of the game is easy - In the Steam port, the final boss is difficult due to removing somewhere around 30-35 tiles, here it was like 10 tiles. :)
Yay finally moreTB16!!! Love it when the turbo gets some love. I was the only kid that had one back then (still have it to this day). Friends and people would come over to play something on nes or snes and would ask what’s that thing next to the Super Nintendo. It was so horribly marketed in the US a lot of people didn’t even know it existed. I didn’t either to be fair I bought it at a flea market in 1991 for $20 with a bunch of games.
They’d always want to try it out and loved it. Such a shame NEC put zero effort into actually marketing the thing it was an awesome and criminally under appreciated console in the 8/16 bit days.
I hope you do more Turbo Grafx 16 game play because this console has amazing games that we missed out
You labled the Volume Gemma as the Volume Messa on the map
love the chronicles version
Excited for ys 2
How come I never heard of the TurboGFX in the 90s
I love the RPG episodes, and it's nice to see one that won't take an entire day to watch, hah!
I'd like to see you give your treatment to Batman Forever for Genesis.
That game is so bizarre, and has so many perplexing design choices. It would be nice for someone to finally take that bag of snakes and lay them out straight for us.
There was obviously a tangible amount of care put into that game, it's just buried beneath fifty different kinds of confusing.
If it was hacked or remade with a control scheme that made sense, and some of the needlessly and ridiculously cryptic things were addressed, I don't think it would've been so poorly received.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but it actually has some cool and interesting mechanics and ideas.
I don't believe it to be a hidden gem or anything, but after all these years, it deserves a more fair shake than it's endured.
So I first encountered the franchise with Ys III on the SNES. I had mixed reviews of it but remember wanting to get the game only for the music. I later met someone in college who told me about the first 2 games and he told me that this game alone was worth getting a TurboGrafx. Boy, was he right. I like the remakes too. Also, my Turbo Duo came with another CD game I hadn't even played, called Exile. Maybe I should load that one up too?
Never played the first one..but I did have Ys on SNES and the current Ys games on playstation
43:58 @ucbvg the type to hang out with you while you do your first level grind
Always enjoyed the Ys series so this is a fun one to watch. Also, Ys X is coming out in the west later this fall!
Ah, yes! Another TurboGrafx game. I always enjoy it when you cover games from systems outside of the NES, SNES, and Genesis. (Of course, I enjoy those videos too.) Also, probably dating myself, but I think of Lyle from Wings first when I think of Thomas Hayden Church.
You forgot to list the Gameboy, he played Gameboy games as well. Final Fantasy Legends, Super Mario Land, and Metroid II as far as I know.
@@DawnLynnCat That would fall in the outside NES, SNES, and Genesis category since. After posting this, I did consider adding Game Boy, but the number of games covered is still small, so I decided against it.
