- Igor Levit is the pianist of the hour. His self-description is: “Human being. Citizen, European. Pianist.” These days, few classical music stars are as politically outspoken as Igor Levit. www.dw.com/en/star-pianist-ig... The musician was honored with the 2019 International Beethoven Prize and the Prize of the International Auschwitz Committee in recognition of his decisive commitment to fighting racism and anti-Semitism. The 32-year-old has taken a clear stance against Germany’s far-right AfD (“Alternative for Germany”) Party and its supporters. And in this Beethoven celebration year, Igor Levit is one of the most in-demand performers of the great composer’s 32 piano sonatas. For the past several months, the German-Russian pianist with Jewish roots has been receiving death threats, so his performances take place under increased security. DW met up with him in January 2020, ahead of his first concert at the Pierre-Boulez-Saal in Berlin.

grateful for this portrait of a living artist and delighted that he is only 32 years old
This guy is the greatest Beethoven pianist today IMHO! It doesn't surprise me that he is also a remarkable and brave human being. I fully support him in any way I can! These fascist movements are pure garbage in my opinion! They must be denounced!! More people must speak strongly against them in every society. (I'm from the U.S. and we see it happening there as well!). Bravo to you Mr. Levit! In every way!!

Igor is an amazing pianist and human being. It's completely ridiculous that such an artist gets death threat. I hope he will be well protected from these criminals.

holywoodschem oder bollywoodschem Elan in Szene. Was der Künstler und
seine Firma ,,absetzen" wollen, muss unbedingt gut verpackt sein. Man
muss wissen , wie man die ,,Ware" anbietet. ...Nackte Schulter- ab und
zu sogar etwas mehr- junge Damen passen zu jedem Instrument. Ein Wolf
oder ein Schwan verstärken die Wirkung. Hauptsache, etwas fällt auf!
Geht es um die Musik? Die Interpretation? ich befürchte, beides ist eher
nebensächlich. Wenn man meint, Beethoven nicht ,,a la Lang Lang"
verkaufen zu können, so verkauft man eben, sieh Cover, Lang Lang ,,a la
Beethoven". Nach Glamour besteht Nachfrage. Er dringt in alles ein. Auch
in die Musik. Handel und Händler regieren die Welt nicht schlechter,
vielleicht sogar besser als Politiker ..."
Oh yes, his sonata recordings are top-notch, that's how I learn learn the sonatas, specifically op. 5 no. 1, op. 14 no. 1&2, quasi una fantasia and pastoral

Its not the Kunst der Fuge, but the fantasia contrapunctisticca from busoni, which uses elements of the KdF. The piece will be in his new album.

I saw Igor Levit on 60 minutes! And brought me here. He is an magifencent pianist! I close my eyes listen to the black and white keys that brings the music beautifully. How poignant! Black and white keys come together to fight racism and I feel like I am there! Thank you for speaking out against hatred! If more people like him spoke out there would be less injustice!

That's how it looks to me as well. It just seems odd that police would allow this to go on. In Europe, people are arrested merely for saying mean things online or having the wrong political opinion. And so it seems strange that they would allow actual death threats to be aired openly without reprisal or investigation.
