Amazing performance. The tape recorder scene in the end gives me chills whenever i watch it. Its so raw and real. Complete embodiment of character and her emotions. Just brilliant.
The ending whenn she is alone in the factory always scares the sh** out of me even though I know she isn't killed.
I really like the scene where she is with the old man and gives him comfort.

Charles Cioffi is rarely mentioned but he did a really good job portraying a disturbed killer in that scene.
Everyone was holding their breath wondering if she would make some political statement. But her father Henry Fonda advised her to stay "there's a lot to say but I'm not going to say in tonight". And so that's what she did. A very classy thing to do.
Lucky for her because she was sick with the flu and had a temperature.She still looked truly beautiful.

Jane Fonda's papa, late actor Henry Fonda died, prostate cancer in August, 1982 in his 70s. He's been outlived by daughter Jane, who's still currently living in her 80s. Speaking, people in their 80s, in 2023 both male vocalists in late Gordon L'ghtft, Jr. from Canadian Town, Orilla, Ont. 🇨🇦/late Kenyan-born Roger Wh'ttkr died in 2023 about 4 1/2 months apart. In fact, late Roger Wh'ttkr died in France 🇫🇷 6 months back. He was well in his 80s at time, his death

Jane Fonda's performance in Klute is one of the best performances ever recorded on film by an American actor. Stunning, brilliant, and extremely intense, that film was all Fonda. Well deserved Oscar for her work. Likewise for her work in They Shoot Horses, Don't They?

Yes, I agree, one of Jane Fonda's best performances, hence her Oscar win. One thing I loved about the film were the therapy sessions between Fonda and Vivian Nathan. Very bold (for that time period) and intelligently acted by both women. From what I've read those scences were somewhat improvised by Jane and Vivian.
Klute was about a high class "call girl" in her early 30s who loves her job at one level, but fundamenatlly wants to get out of the businesss at another. She gets involved with a cop named John Klute from PA who is investigating the disappearance and possible murder of his friend in NYC.
I love her acceptance speech, she said so much with so little and was very gracious at the same time

Her father advised her not to say too much political. So she heeded advice that and kept it short. Jane, also was quite sick with the flu that night. She had a fever and felt very sick when this was announced. Jane looks so beautiful here despite being ill. Such a natural beauty back in the day.
Love the way she bowed and turned back to the audience as she was walking up to accept. She was really sick that night too. With the flu I heard. I think she threw up that night after the awards She still looks great.

Her performance in Klute was mesmerizing (her best performance), very well-deserved. I liked her speech, but her second speech was better.
Janet Suzman is one of the best and certainly most underrated actresses of the 20th century. HEAVY COMPETITION HERE! (Redgrave, Jackson, etc.)

Actually, as Jane Fonda herself pointed out in her autobiography, she followed the advice of her father and did not regret it.

Jane did win the creme de la creme New York Film Critics Best Actress Award in January 1970 overwhelming for "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" and again two years later in Jan. 1972 for "Klute" (Gena Rowlands was first runner up for "Minnie and Moskowitz" a cute comedy/drama directed by John Cassavettes

Thank you for your service Sir. My brother was a Marine KIA January 1968 at 18 in Vietnam. I love Jane Fonda. She tried to stop a war and worked tirelessly to help the Indigenous and others in a society that are not treated equally. I am so glad to see a Marine speak up for such a dedicated woman whose crime was to challenge the system and speak against an unjust war.

Fonda's very short remarks were entirely appropriate. She was still to win a second Oscar six years later for "Coming Home". Also was nominated for "Julia", "China Syndrome", "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?", AND "On Golden Pond"

@@david.hirsch4235 I was looking for that criticism to arise. Vietnam was an utter catastrophe, just as Iraq and Afghanistan have turned out to be. Fonda was a bit player in the whole affair, but felt the wrath of the betrayal Americans rightfully felt over the war. However, that wrath was never aimed where it should be, at least not fully, which belongs with the Johnson and Nixon administrations. We were lied into that war, then lied to again by the Bush administration in 2003. That's where Americans should place their anger; our own sick government...and ourselves for electing and re-electing them...
A deserved Oscar win for a superb screen performance. Politics have nothing to do with it. Very nicely put by Jane.

@broadjumper1 true and she has apologised for that one statement in 1988. It was an emotional response to the killing that was taking place, but it wasn't right for her to insult PoWs. That doesn't make her a bad person, just human.
Thank you Jane for your efforts which helped hasten the end to the illegal United States war in southern Vietnam and the horrific bombing of northern Vietnamese cities. Jane was very brave and she was correct, she saved many lives by trying to end this war, eventually the protests succeeded.
And there are still people who actually say they ‘hate’ her for being a ‘traitor’. These simple -minded misogynists need to learn about Robert McNamara and his ilk.

i saw klute for the first time this past weekend, and it was a MARVELOUS performance. i can't wait until klute comes out on blu ray so i can marvel at her acting constantly.

Julie Christe was in Venice, Italy filming "Don't Look Now", otherwise she would have attended, as she attended the BAFTA awards the month earlier, closer in London,UK for her 2 nominations for both "McCabe&Mrs.Miller" and "The Go Between". Most critics predicted Jane Fonda would win, as she swept The New York Film Critics Award votes for Best Actress, similar to her same win (NYFC) two years earlier for her equally sublime work in "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?".

Jane Fonda in fact does do Broadway and in fact received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Play, two years ago for a play I believe called "44 Variatons", as she is a genuis talent in cinema, television movies and on the stage.
My favorite speech of all-time by one of my favorite actresses of all-time, both acting-wise and personality-wise.
Does anyone ever mention the performance? Brilliantly played, well deserved. A shame Donald Sutherland wasn't even nominated.
Just saw "Klute" earlier this evening in a phenomenal, pristine 35mm archival print at LACMA (thanks, AMPAS!) I liked the film more than ever and Jane is certainly deserving of this award. She played that character perfectly. And seeing it on the big screen as it was meant to be seen, one can really get immersed (I certainly did) in the character, mood, paranoia psychological tension of wonderful storytelling.
And looking back, this is a great speech. As everyone knows, this was Jane's "controversial" period, and keeping it mum was the right thing to do. A class act all the way!
In my opinion, this was her finest moment on film... a "must-see."
I can understand a lot of people apparently were not too happy with her stands on the Vietnam war, but I am always a bit surprised by the huge controversy she still causes by simply expressing her opinion. Celebrities have the same freedom as speech as 'normal' citizens have and people who have a problem with that are maybe not entirely capable to think for themselves.
Go Jane! Always respected her, she's such a personality, so diverse and interesting! Actress, activist, fitness guru etc. Oh and she looks like her dad SO much! When I look at her I kind of see Henry :)

The 1st is a sequence of acting Oscar wins for films shot by the great Gordon Willis. Between the period 1972 to 1978 Marlon Brando, John Houseman, Robert De Niro, Jason Robards and Diane Keaton would also win. Despite these successes, Gordon went overlooked for every single one of these films.
Gordon Willis' eye and painterly compositions are breathtaking. Don't know if you've seen his only directorial debut "Windows" but if you haven't, go find a copy and see it.
Frankly, I don't care about Fonda's political opinions, at least when it comes to here. She gives one of the best performances ever, and she is one of my favorite winners ever.

I saw her receiving her Star in April 2013 during TCM Film Festival week-end. She looks amazing. Even though she obviously has had plastic surgery she didn't go the extremes of many. She is looks very physically fit for her age. Peter looks great too. Good Fonda genes I guess.

And you are correct; how do young actors receive their stars ie Eva Langoria so quickly and not Jane. As Sam Elliott so accurately expressed; 'today it's all about the f#*kin youth' when talking about seasoned actors not being offered work.

Imagine also Doris Day has never rec'd an honourary Academy Award. Not many have had such a diverse career. I wish I had the time right now to devote to a petition. A great idea!

An Oscar well deserved... and a speech well said. Jane wanted to speak out against the injustice of the Vietnam War, but, at the advice of her father, Henry, she was suggested not to, but the way she stated what she said, said so much to the humility and respect she has for the movie industry, the American people, and for those experiencing the trauma of the times. A true activist, an amazing actress, an American hero.
Jane was not silenced. She actually said that line on the advice of her father.

Jane was great in this film and deserved this, her first oscar. 1971 was a very good year for female actor performances. In fact there were about a dozen performances that year deserving of an oscar nomination but as always just room for the top five which were Jane Fonda(Klute), Julie Christie(McCabe&Mrs.Miller), Glenda Jackson(Sunday, Bloody Sunday), Vanessa Redgrave(Mary Queen of Scots) and Janet Suzman(Nicolas and Alexandra); seven other terrific performances that year that sadly could not make the cut were Kitty Winn(The Panic in Needle Park)-she won The Cannes Film Festival BestActressAward), Ruth Gordon(Harold and Maude), Julie Christie gave a second great performance that year in "The Go Between" as did Glenda Jackson in "Mary, Queen of Scots), Gena Rowlands(Minnie and Moskowitz), Shirley MacLaine(Desperate Characters) and Jessica Walters(Play Misty For Me)

NO Glenda Jackson has never been nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category.
The B Supporting nominees that year were Cloris Leachman, Ellen Burstyn, Margaret Leighton, Ann Margret, and Barbara Harris. Apology accepted.

Klute was a masterpiece and Jane made it so! Klute and Looking for Mr. Goodbar with Diane Keaton are at the top of my all time favorite movies, these women were at their apex! I can't leave Natalie Wood out, Splendor in the Grass was magnificent in every way!

Given what was going on with her and politics at the time, it's astonishing she said almost nothing. Today this would have been a three-minute lashing out at every single person in America.
I think it's fair to say that the Oscars has become a "bigger deal" since 72,can you imagine 3 out of the 5 best actress nominees not attending the ceremony today?Also,interesting to note that only 1 out of 5 nominees is American,wonder if that's ever happened before or since?
