Great comparison Shug. I never realized DCF had more volume. I backpack with young grandchildren and need extra space in my pack. Some day the table will turn and they will carry more of grandpa's gear. This was VERY informative. Thank you. Love your music and your paintings. You're very talented. Remember, the healthiest place you can be is in the woods. Thanks again.
I'm a generation younger, taking the kids out. Last summer walked 12 miles up the local river, hammocked and walked back next day, me and the two boys. Suddenly all my UL stuff came in handy again having to carry three of everything! Anyway, having kids is a great excuse to need more camping gear...
Using snake skins with DCF tarp will increase volume. But if you fold and roll a DCF tarp, you can get it down much smaller. i recieved 6 sq yards of DCF. It was folded to the size of a couple cd cases stacked up, like 3 or 4..
DCF = Dyneema Composite Fiber. Cubic Technologies was the name of the lab that originally created DCF. Close enough but just for those who weren't around when Cuben came on the scene. EDIT: Just saw you guys jamming out at the end of the video. I love it! Very cool!
One of the main reasons I switched to DCF on my tarps, is that they absorb zero water. I seem to keep picking backpacking trips when it rains a lot and let me tell you the water retention of sil nylon is significant where the DCF has none. Volume is no issue for me and I use either a 38L Nero or 62L Arc Haul, in both cases my tarp is always on the outside in the back mesh area. I've always kept my tarps on the outside in the mesh so I dont have to open my backpack up to setup tarp and cover in case it is raining. And back when I used SilNylon tarps, it was nice when they were soaking wet to have them outside my pack away from dry stuff. Would be nice if DCF had less volume, but really I just domt see putting tarps (or stakes) inside a backpack and that is where your main Liters of semi dry storage is at any way
Yeah, for those of us up here in the Pacific Northwest, this can be a big factor. When your tarp or tent can be shaken dry in the morning, it saves a surprising amount of weight over waterlogged sil fabrics. Plus you don't need to be concerned about it drying out.
After watching your channel for a few years, I finally pulled the trigger on a s Hennessy Exp Classic. Can't wait for warmer weather to test run it. Thanks for taking the time to share your wisdom.
Great info! Of all my tarps, I love my DCF winter palace. Same as yours, but just a little wider. Absorbs zero water, great coverage, doors are awesome, and I built a internal pole mod for mine so I can porch mode it in ideal wether without hiking poles. Hike on my friend!
I know this isn't the topic of the video, but I got to say it. I\ve watched basically all of your videos and have been on some decent trips with my hammock. The last trip I want on was a few days ago. I slept miserably. I got home and watched some more videos and found out that I had hung my underquilt wrong and my pillow is too hard (it's a self-inflatable). I went out today and tried out with a down pillow and hung up my hammock and underquilt properly this time, and I promise you. It was like laying on a cloud. I'm so happy now with my DIY hammock and I know I will be sleeping comfortably on the next trip. So I need to thank you. Shug thanks for putting out great videos, I'm a happy young man with a comfortable hammock setup because of you.
Thankee Shug for bringing your form of normality to our community. I've got a new tarp arriving tomorrow, so I've been looking over your tarp videos - Thanks for them too, buddy.

Being part of that 70+ club my son's don't want me going out to get anything any longer. The snake skin is so slick and practical. Your paintings are looking good. "Light as a barrel of rabbits" then the entertainers gaze to drive home the point. The wife was dancing around during the picking at the end as well. Great stuff!

Great comparison it's always nice to things side by side. Volume is really the only reason I have not switch to a DCF tarp. Once I start doing long trails that's when I can see picking up the lighter guy.

You answered a lot of questions for me about tarp materials. Is there any major difference in durability?. Good luck with the colonoscopy. When I schedule one I mark my calendar with a big smiley face.
They are all durable. Silnylon is really tough. DCF will poke easily when piched tight but is tough on the pull. The seams are usually glues where sil and silpoly is sewn. DFC will patch with duct tape. Sil and silpoly won't.
Volume's usually the issue for me, too. Even in "ideal" conditions, I tend to carry for all weather (because we're likely to get anything, here), which leaves precious little room in the pack for much else. Weight's less of an issue to me than volume.
Thanks for the comparison. I didn't know that DCF packed up that large. I'd like to see a video comparing how loud tarps are in the wind and in the rain. Isn't DCF more noisy? Thanks again.
It is more a matter of "pitch" with the sound. One gets used to it. There will always be tarp noise in the rain. I do find silnylon the easiest on the ears. But, hang a tarp a bit looser and it lessens the sharp pitch sound.
Do you sale any of your paintings? I really never thought about weight vs size just if I could get my pack down to a weight that I could easily manage while getting older. Thank you for make education entertaining. God bless and stay safe.
Found your videos the other day looking for a little info and stayed as I was entertained and informed. Jim Varney 70%, Robin Williams 25%, and Professor Proton for the rest. All enjoyable.
@@shugemery Thank You! My five year old loves your vids and is willing to go hiking and camping this year with me due to your vids and not my prompting. I am getting a lot of enjoyment out of your channel. Be happy to share my bottle if we ever meet on a trail.
Thanks, Shug. For me, size is more important than a few grammes. And cost is more important than both! For me, silpoly is a happy medium in terms of packability, cost, and usage. Hmmm... I wonder how long each tarp ‘lives’ before it starts a-leakin’. What’s your opinion, Shug? P.S. hope your shoulder is all good and 100% now.
Hmm, I'm a sculptor who hammocks. The hammock adds to the creativity somehow. The swing? The sway? My first hammock tarp was a 9 foot square of poly off a giant roll bought at big meadows ( AT, SNP) camp store. Not small and not light, but cheap. I still have it.
Great apples-to-apples comparison. In hindsight would you have preferred the HG green color instead of camo? Does the less translucency of camo (ie. a darker sleep on moonlit nights) make up for the slightly greater weight and cost than the green color? Thanks. WB!!!
Easy snake skin MOD: Get a loofah and carefully cut or untie the string keeping it bunches up Then slide it over your tarp Add draw strings at each end if you want it a straw around the two middle openings if you cut it in half to have it slide out from the middle
After watching one of your videos some time ago , the Superfly was the first cottage industry piece of equipment I was able pry the money out of my wallet for. Probably the best money I have spent . It feels like castle , takes up very little room, and only weighs a little more than a pound. Unless I hike the AT some day (which is on my bucket list) this is the only one I (really) need. Although it would be nice to have other options. Thank you for your videos. And thanks for the jam.
I'd love a DCF tarp both for hammock and ground camping. Wish it was a bit cheaper though! Even just buying the material works out about 200usd (here in Europe anyway).
How well does that HG camo blend in? It looks pretty good in the video but I've seen others where it seemed kind of reflective in the light. Could just look that way on film.
I haven't made the jump into hammocking but in your opinion which is the better silpoly or silnylon? and good luck with the probeing I just had it done.
Hey Shug! Love your stuff, thank you for educating this old soul in countless ways as we prepare for our hike of the CT this summer (we hope). I’m curious to know if you notice whether heat retention is better in any certain fabric. I.e. Is a Silpoly tarp noticeably warmer in the winter than a DCF? Thank you and hope your are well and stay so.
Good stuff as always. Any thoughts on what size tarp you'd need to cover two hammocks using spreader bars? I know Dutch has a new two person tarp. I've got one of the 12' Journey tarps from Hammock Gear and am hoping I can make that work.
I've never done it since I am a solo guy but have seen folks using and trying all matter of tarps. Journey is pretty wide to you might be OK. Give a try and see. It is all a matter of pitch.
Which tarp do you tend to carry more on backpacking trips? I'm looking at DCF to keep the weight down similar to my tent setup, but a total newb to hammocking. I figure worse case senario if I hate hammocking I could sell a DCF tarp easily. HG palace is what I had my eye on if I go with DCF, but worry about it being overkill.
I think id go with a minifly in DCF so that its both light and not too terribly bulky but that doesnt exist, so it's silnylon. which is absolutely fine to be honest.
I thought DCF was Dyneema Composite Fabric because it’s a composite made up of dyneema in the middle with something like a mylar or other PET material on the outsides. And DSM is the Dyneema fibers.
Finally!! Someone covering volume, not so much weight!! I go out on a bicycle, volume is 100 times more important than weight for me!
Very true. That real estate space on a bike is critical.
Great comparison Shug. I never realized DCF had more volume. I backpack with young grandchildren and need extra space in my pack.
Oh yes. They lend themselves to folks that like to fiddle around a bit.
Always love the vids shug
Thank ya'
I’m an artist, and paintings look great.
Well thanks. Really fun to find painting this late in life.
Great Comparisons Shug Thanks for sharing and i hope ur bum feels fine next week... Dennis, Canoehound Adventures
My bum and I thank you. We get flushed Thursday.
At the beginning, I love the new painting in the hammock, seems "paisible" (peaceful)
I thought it captured a good hammock moment...napping!
Thanks for the picking and-a chatting.
Y'elcome and thanks for watching.
Love the music at the end.
Thankee for that.
Great apples-to-apples comparison. In hindsight would you have preferred the HG green color instead of camo? Does the less translucency of camo (ie. a darker sleep on moonlit nights) make up for the slightly greater weight and cost than the green color? Thanks. WB!!!
I kinda like this camo. Price was not a consideration for me.
@@shugemery Very helpful. Price wise, I'm on Santa's "nice list" along with you.
Easy snake skin MOD:
Get a loofah and carefully cut or untie the string keeping it bunches up
Then slide it over your tarp
Add draw strings at each end if you want it a straw around the two middle openings if you cut it in half to have it slide out from the middle
I hear of a lot of folks doing that....whatever works right.
I tried that, not durable enough for me.
Loved the pickin!
Whooooo Buddy...thankee.
I knew what snake skins were from previous videos. =D
Great info..
Thanks for the video.. enjoyed the music at the end.
I know some know but now the new know. Know what I mean?
Hello,
Do you know a Silnylon tarp in 3.5x3.5m dimensions? Thank you!
Check Warbonnet......www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/tarps/
After watching one of your videos some time ago , the Superfly was the first cottage industry piece of equipment I was able pry the money out of my wallet for. Probably the best money I have spent . It feels like castle , takes up very little room, and only weighs a little more than a pound. Unless I hike the AT some day (which is on my bucket list) this is the only one I (really) need. Although it would be nice to have other options. Thank you for your videos. And thanks for the jam.
I use my smaller tarp for 3 seasons but been using the Superfly for Winter and when I know I will need the coverage and wind block.
@@shugemery in a related subject, do you spray permethrin on your tarps? I'm a little concerned about deteriorating waterproofing. Tanks alot
I'd love a DCF tarp both for hammock and ground camping. Wish it was a bit cheaper though! Even just buying the material works out about 200usd (here in Europe anyway).
I prefer my silnylon and silpoly tarps as they pack down smaller. For me pack volume trumps weight. Apples and bananas I suppose.
@@shugemery I will remain content with my silnylon then :)
Shug.....you made my day !!
Whooooo Buddy))))
Love the paintings shug. Are they going to be for sale
Thank you. I may do prints down the road. Been looking into it.
They are very good. Im sure they would sell
Hey shug a few friends and I have a trip planned for the BWC this weekend. Any issues with closures due to the virus that you know of?
I have no idea. Best to call the closest ranger station I think.
shugemery thanks brother!
What stuff sacks do you use for your tarps? I have mine in snake skins, but have decided that I want stuff sacks for them as well.
I use the stuff sacks the tarps came with.
Tyvek and a pair of earplugs for the extreme budget minded. DD for me, or 4lb double tent. Cheers
Whatever you gotta do..do.
How well does that HG camo blend in? It looks pretty good in the video but I've seen others where it seemed kind of reflective in the light. Could just look that way on film.
Pretty well. But of course a lot depends on locale. It does have a sheen to it. But I ain't hiding!
Try being a bartender in a small town for 10 years. You'll hide lol. Stay in school kids!
I haven't made the jump into hammocking but in your opinion which is the better silpoly or silnylon? and good luck with the probeing I just had it done.
I think silpoly absorbs a bit more water in rain. But I like the feel. Either does the job.
No tarp is actually warmer in my opinion....but keeping the wind off you is a great thing to keep the heat you have while sleeping.
Does stuffing, as opposed to folding/rolling, alter the water resistance properties of the tarp?
Always heard folding can develop a crease that may become a weak spot...so I was always a wadder/stuffer.
Cobid 19 ! Those paintings were amazing!
Got the sillpolly mountain fly tarp works perfectly here in Utah (not much rain) keeps the sun off of ya!
Righto! Good little tarp.
I carry my DIY Blackcrow tarp the most. 11' x 7'. DCF s very expensive. It is light but does not pack down as small as Silnylon or silpoly.
@@shugemery thanks so much for your reply. I know you get a ton of questions and comments and I appreciate you taking the time to answer mine.
Hey Shug, You ever thought about hiking the Bartram Trail ?
I haven't really. Don't know much about it but have heard there is a lot of road walks.
Thank you for the information. What guidelines do you use for your tarps?
I use this currently.....www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/product/tarp-guyline-yellow/
@@shugemery thank you does it work with line locks 3
I have never tried so can't say for sure. It more than likely would I think. Best to ask the vendor.
@@shugemery Thank you
I think id go with a minifly in DCF so that its both light and not too terribly bulky but that doesnt exist, so it's silnylon. which is absolutely fine to be honest.
I like that tarp too.
I thought DCF was Dyneema Composite Fabric because it’s a composite made up of dyneema in the middle with something like a mylar or other PET material on the outsides. And DSM is the Dyneema fibers.
Technically, that is correcto!
