Provincial parks are open and operating at 50% capacity. I did manage to get a reservation for Algonquin Canisbay lake campground for a week. Randy and the gang at Dream Hammock. Always will do a great job. With the custom work that they do. They are tough to beat. Soon I will be ordering the Sparrow. With the trees 22 feet apart. Thanks. Always enjoy your videos. I'm in MN too. Preparing for my first hammock camping trip to the BWCA this Sept. Trying to figure out what SIZE tarp to use. My hammock is about 9.5' and my tarp is 10x10. Set up, doesn't seem like both ends well be protected if it rains. Ordered a 14x14 tarp too, but it's poly so bulky....idk...
Who cares which is faster or easier... I care about which is more comfortable, versatile and best in all kinds of terrain. The tarp and hammock wins hands down. I hike in the Colorado mountains and having a tarp and hammock in the trees, on steep slopes or even over a flowing mountain stream makes for a comfortable nights sleep. Very light weight. And less bulk. Not so good at blocking the wind. Or to have in a sever rain storm. Thank you demonbushcraft 570 for watching. I really appreciate it.
One of the best videos on putting up a tarp! Great job, marine. By the way, have you ever hiked with Shug? You just said you were from Minnesota. I have never seen you two together in a video. I bet you guys would get along. God bless you. John
Shug and I where at the 2019 Wisconsin Frozen Butt Hang. One night we stayed up till 2:00 in the morning just shooting the bull. He is a great guy, with a very interesting life story. And I consider him the God Father of Hammocking. It is really hard to do a trip video when there are two cameras filming at the same time. If I where to do a trip with him. The video would be about Shug. But who knows. Maybe some day. Thank you John for all of the video watching. I always appreciate it. God bless
Being in a hammock is like being in your mothers womb. That is why we love to sleep in a hammock. Thank you for watching 71 S-works. I always appreciate it. Cheers!
@@AdventureswiththeMarine I was wondering about that. I live on the Texas Arkansas border and I get inundated with them every summer so I was wondering about that.
I recently started getting away from car camping and started kayak camping with my hammock. I was wondering if you could show some knots that are easy to tie and set up a rain fly? Last night I was camping from my kayak and I had to adjust all my anchors into storm mode and we recieved about 4" of rain. By the time I got all my knots undone I was drenched and everything was soaked. Thanks for any advice.
Using stingerz. Makes lowering the tarp quick and easy. When not using hardware. Slip knots are the quickest and easiest when using knots. Last month. I did a video called: 'How to Hang a Tarp/secrets to the ridgeline" It will show how I use the slip knot. Thank you for watching AWSKAKER77. I really appreciate it.
Hey, one problem that I was having with my hammock, was the water was coming down the hammock ropes and onto my hammock. What are your ideas to eliminate this problem? The Trees I can usually tie to are Manuka Trees and they don't have to much of a canopy
I did a video last fall called Hammock, Tarp, and Camping Tips/Episode #2/Water breaks and driplines. This video will explain how to solve your problem. Please check it out. Thank you FALLEN5200 for watching. I really appreciate it.
I think the best time i been hammock caping was when i climbed up a mountain on a very very steep angle and i found a clearing and had a perfect view aof a beautiful mountain and slept great even knowing if i fell i would die
Those are the hangs that I am always looking for. The ones with the epic view. There is no way you are going to fall out of a gathered end hammock. But you have to be careful in those dangerous hangs. Especially getting up a night to pee. Thank you for sharing that 4x4 Texas. I really appreciate that.
I have been attaching my tarp via carabiners to my HG ultralight daisy chain so that I no longer have a secondary line running to the trees. Does anyone else do this? I haven't seen any videos detailing this method of setup.
I have all my stakes with orange Lawson Reflect-it. Bright color to see during the day. And having reflect-it ( which shine very bright when you shine your flashlight towards the hammock ) to see during the dark of the night. Plus, with the cordage tied to the stake. You will never again lose or forget a stake. Thank you for watching Craig. I really appreciate it.
Good question! You can hang your pack and boots ( with the laces tied together ) on the end of your hammock, with carbiners. Most of the time. I will lie all of my gear, on a tarp underneath my hammock. Where it will be nice and dry. So far no critters. A few years ago. While hiking on a island in Lake Superior called: "Isle Royale" There was reports of a fox or foxes, stealing peoples boots. On that trip. I hung the boots. Thank you for watching L Q.
I’m sure you have answered this many times and I’m sorry for asking again but can you provide a link to the gear in your videos? What tarp are you using? Do you have an affiliate link that we can click to help support you?
Sorry that I did not get the links in right away. I just got done putting them in . That is very kind of you for wanting to support this channel. When you buy something from any of my amazon links. I get a small percentage of the sale. But the biggest way to give support. Is by watching and leaving comments. That inspires me to make more videos. Thank you for all of your support. I always appreciate it.
Great video! Really hit some major points of tarp pitching. We use them all regularly and you did wonderfully explaining them. Is that a Zpacks Hammock tarp with doors? It’s super transparent. We stealth camp 90% of time and for this reason i could never have a tarp that light of and color. I’ve sent an email to Zpacks asking if they would consider building one in Camo. Still waiting to hear 🤞 Hope you have a great day Marine and hope you staying strong. Big respect from my pups to yours ✊🏼 Thank you
I know. When i been researching hamochs and tarps, they are all advertising neon orange, green ect. I could never sleep in that! Too vulnerable at night for flashy colors. I found that subdued brown is best camo for wind breaker matterial. Woodland camo works... but subdued brown works the best. Hope that helped!
The tarp that I was using in the video is the Hammock Gear Winter Palace. It is a big tarp ( 11' X 10.4' if I where do it over again. I would of bought the 12' ) with doors. Dyneema Fiber is super light. But bulky. Dose not absorb water. You just shake the tarp and it just flies off. But very expensive. The transparent is great if you like to get up early in the morning. And on a rainy day. It is also great with a lot of light being transmitted underneath. For cooking, reading or playing cards with friends. But if you are looking for a stealth tarp. Then a camo, brown or olive is the way to go. Thank you TheHikingShibas and Frogman# for watching and sharing.
Backpacking With a Hammock Thanks Marine for the informative reply. I just had a gander over at Hammock gear and they do offer the palace tarp in Camo in 12 foot. I will give Zpacks some more time to reply if they would consider making their hammock tarp with doors in Camo for me, since i already own a Duplex in Camo, Arc Haul backpack and 10F Solo quilt from them. I like to stick with one company (when i can) when they make such quality gear. I’d like to continually support small cottage companies. I feel they notice that and i tend to get better quality customer support when i have specific questions and requests. I agree too about DCF i love my duplex with the DCF material. I just shake it off and pack it up. My ENO House fly is great with all the options i put on it like dutchware clip-on pull outs and shock cord loops on all guy points using Ringworms and zingit guylines which are all permantly attached to the stakes. Here is the downfall though on the ENO, it weigh 28 ounces (dry) in its mesh snakeskin and i haven’t weighed it in the morning after a rain but when i pack it up when it’s wet, i can image this silnylon is weighing closer to 3.5 pounds when it’s saturated . As far as the packability, this does not bother me in the slightest because the Duplex lives on the outside of my pack (usually right on top) and the Tarp in snakeskin lives curled up in the big mesh Pocket on the outside of the Arc Haul 👍🏼 with the two pups i hike with, we like to camp comfortably and give them the large full coverage shelter of the House Fly to the pups, while I’m in the Duplex. Upgrading to a DCF Hammock Tarp with doors with save me so much weight and still give my kids full coverage 👍🏼 yeah it’s $550 vs the $80 i paid for the ENO on sale . The way i look at it though, i use my gear so much that it’s worth the investment. If we camped once or twice a year the ENO is fine. But we camp outside once or twice a week outside for fun. Also key for our Thru hike next summer on the CT 🙌. Sorry rambling on Marine. I love Hammock camping a lot and go one for days about it. Thanks again for all your great content you do for us! You’re one of my top 5 favorite TH-cam channels and the friendliest Marine i’ve never met. Hope to see you on trial one day! Live Life & Stay Strong Marine 🙏
Backpacking With a Hammock so i heard back from Zpacks negatively on my request but also came with some interesting news i thought i share: “Thank you for reaching out to us regarding the Camo Material. As of now, the Camo has been discontinued and we will not be restocked. We will however be getting several new colors in July. Burnt Orange .75oz, Sand .75oz, and White .55oz. We apologize for the inconvenience.” So i guess Hammock Gear and I will be the big winner with a 12ft Camo Palace! It’s a hefty tag but i do use my gear so much it’s worth the investment. I figure, I’ll have to pack up my wet 4 pound Silnylon tarp a handful more times before i convince myself of the benefit 🤪 i also realized that the Zpacks Hammock Tarp with Doors is more comparable to the Hammock Gear Standard Tarp with Doors. The Palace Tarp seems one of a kind in size 😮 I hope some of that info was interesting for you and i do hope you having a good day sir. Thank you
You don't have the 360 degree view. But when it is very windy. That is a great way to block the wind. You will have to tie it out on the stakes of the other side panel. Otherwise the side panel of the tarp would be flopping in the wind. I have used this technique a few times and it works very well. I love how you are thinking and improvising. Very wise. Well done Maryanne. And thank you for sharing that and watching. I always appreciate it.
I did not use a continuous ridgeline. I was using a ridgeline that is more like a hammock suspension. I did a video last month that covered all of the different ridgelines called: How to hang a tarp / Secrets to the ridgeline. Please check it out. I believe it will answer your questions. And if you have any more questions. Please ask.

Backpacking With a Hammock i just saw how much i wrote. Sorry so long, if it’s too long and don’t wanna read i understand 👍🏼
Thank you
What about just flipping half the tarp back over the ridge line until bad weather comes?
You don't have the 360 degree view. But when it is very windy. That is a great way to block the wind. You will have to tie it out on the stakes of the other side panel. Otherwise the side panel of the tarp would be flopping in the wind. I have used this technique a few times and it works very well. I love how you are thinking and improvising. Very wise. Well done Maryanne. And thank you for sharing that and watching. I always appreciate it.
Do you use a ridgeline or do you attach line to the tarp which you tie to the trees?
I believe he does not use a ridgline. Atleast not in this video
Please ask.
@@AdventureswiththeMarine I saw it. I use a continuous ridgeline with a trucker's Hitch to get it tight
But doesn't it still get covered in dew?
The top of the tarp in the morning will in most cases be damped from dew. But dry's off quickly. Thank you for watching EnchantedOcelot. I really appreciate it.
1st
Darn! I am never 1st. Thank you Tanner for being first.
