I don't really use VBs.......so that vid could be a long time coming! Well, other than bread bags in my winter boots with wet snow now and again. But the one time I tried a VB, I was warm but wet.
thanks, Shug. did my first seam seal on a tarp just two weeks ago. wasn't pretty and not what anyone would consider a factory sealed job, but after watching this I feel a lot better about the way I had to try to do it in my small kitchen with limited space and in small increments. the best part of the whole thing was that I put it up in SE MN last week before we got the snow and rain that cold-soaked everything and it worked! Hurray! so all my worry about getting it 'just right' was for naught and after watching this I know a couple of easier things/ways to do it on my second one, which will be in a week or so when I get the time.
Thanks for yet another great show, from a regular viewer. I am just setting up to proof a new DD 3.5x 3.5, a 2 man Gonex and a bunch of other gear. Your tips will come in handy. I like your choice of the sponge brush, looks ideal.

Perfect timing. I got my Superior Hammock and am surching for a tarp. You told me I would need to seam seal it when I got it. I'm new at hammocking, and this video will help a lot.
In the sewing section in Walmart, little tubes for a buck. That tube will do both sides of your tarp. Excellent tip to ensure dryness Shug. Good to see ya my friend. I have a new tent I'm going do the seams I bought Kiwi silicone spray don't know if you have used that product, it suppose to be excellent for waterproofing. Love the tune at the end sounds great 👍 have a great night my friend
I'm in my mid 70's and grew up camping and never once did we ever seam seal our tent. Never knew that was something we needed to do. But it's a real good idea. We've been in many storms in our tent and mostly dry inside. Did get a bit of moisture inside once which I assumed, incorrectly I guess, that it was condensation. I'll be pulling out my tent when it gets a bit warmer to make sure it's still in working order and then seal my seams. Thanks never knew that was necessary but makes sense.
A good project for a tarp while out camping on a nice weekend too. Time to kill, able to let it bake in the sun to cure. Good stuff, Maynard! And that clean-up tip is for "Rindercella Slopped Her Dripper". We'll see how many are old enough to remember that line, and where it came from.
I believe the spay was called camp dry years ago in the military we used it can spray on anything just another thought nice to have options if anyone is interested. Thanks for great vid as always my friend 👍
New tent comes this week. It will be the first one I seal before using it. I may pitch a couple of my old ones and go over them too. Oh, I need to check my tarps too. Gonna be a long day.
Great video Shug. It came one trip too late lol. Just finished a hike on Ice Age Trail and Tuesday night/Wednesday morning got rain/sleet/snow. I seam sealed my W.B. Thunder Fly weeks prior but should have tested it. Seems my seam sealing skills seriously suffer. The lower portion of the "V" on all four dripped a little. Nothing too bad and nothing ruined. But great lesson. I shall endeavor to persevere in your footsteps o Master of the silicone/ mineral spirit.
Nice! I might get that Dutch tarp that is 4 point with a few extra tie outs & no seam. It is like 12.5 foot on the ridge & one can do a few funky things with it, given the tie outs. I'd change the fact it is 12 feet the other way though. I'd take it more like 10 or 11 feet. Maybe someday I will build a custom Sector Seven Franken Tarp.
I'm not a hammock camper, but enjoyed learning about something I'll never use or even ever thought of. And get to see if there is anything new in your control line inventory. Nice Renault shirt too.
I didn't think mine would leak without sealing it. I can't believe how much water actually came through. I did mine the same way you did. Inside and out. Dry as can be now. I really enjoy your vids. Thanks! You seem like you might have lots of empty tuna fish cans laying around. Lol.
Been putting off seam sealing my new silnylon tent for about 6 weeks now because I don't have a ventelated space in my apartment. Kind of stuck until the weather improves! And it's a trekking pole tent which doesn't help - never even pitched it! Nice to see that beautiful painting of yours make a cameo. I have my print hanging on the wall right next to me and I love to sit and look at it on the days I can't get out. Moved to Scotland recently and got in my first hang of the year last weekend right on the shore of Loch Katrine. Unbelieveable view. I think it's going to be a good year. All the best Shug :)
Being old and cheap, I tend to to buy cheapo, thin, lightweight tarps because they are light and compact (and cheap). They require seam-sealing because I worry about poorly sewn seams and corners leaking of course. But there is another reason to apply seam sealer, especially when the stitching is less-than-perfect. I find that the sealer acts like glue and reduces the chance that a loose thread will continue to unravel and allow a seam or pull-out to come apart. Of course, this is less of a problem on a higher-quality piece of gear, but anything sewn can potentially come un-sewn, and a little bit of insurance is a good thing.
Thanks Shug for another great instructional video. I just used my new Dutchware Bonded Sil-Poly Tarp in snow and freezing rain this past weekend. Dutch just made seam sealing obsolete for affordable tarps.
Its a good idea to set your tarp up taut before applying the seam sealer. The more exposed the seams are when being sealed, the better seal you will get
Well it was March here in Minnesota and cold and snow-covered outside. FYI...I did stretch it out as I applied the seam sealer. Never leaked on me to this day.
Awesome video Shug thanks! I too have seam sealed many, many tarps and tents and read a tip years ago about using Permatex 81730 flowable silicone windshield and glass sealer - and I've never looked back. Flowable being the key term. It comes with a nozzle that you can cut the size of hole you want and I use that and push the bead into the threads with my fingers while wearing nitrile gloves. Works fantastically well. Also got a tip to load up a curved tip dental syringe with your sealer of choice- will try that too next time.
Hey Shug! Have you thawed out from the FBH? Thanks for the vid. Why shouldn't you put the silicone directly from Menards (without thinning with mineral spirits) on your tarp? Got a new Thunder Fly and about to seal it. Thanky! I hope to see you out on the trail again soon. Jeremy

I know this might be an overcooked question but in your Elder experience; what is a better pack fule; alcohol, sold fule tabs, gas, or wood? I'd say it is personal preference. For me in 3 season I tote alcohol for ease and quiet. Fire is always good. Winter I use white gas to melt snow for water . And fire. So it all depends.
Great info and demo Shug! Getting ready to seal my Lanshan 1 pro soon and this picked up my confidence level. Ugly seams are better then a wet sleeping bag buddy! Early!
Excellent tutorial sir! The one thing that always baffled me about this... every cheap tarp or tent I've bought comes with taped seams, never had a leak. Every expensive cottage handmade tarp or tent, seems to require seam sealing. For that kind of money, is it unreasonable to expect them to take a few extra minutes to do it?
Un related to this video , but I have just started using a hammock and love it , I have a ETROL PELICAN hammock, I was hoping you might be able to do a review on it , or perhaps suggesting proper set up for this type of hammock. Thanks , I love and have learned a ton from your videos.
Well after the drying period is over, any issues with how they stuff back I to their stuff sacks? Even after the tacky phase? Will that sealant ever crack due to the stress of being compacted? Great video and appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
I used the gearaid (back when it was seam seal brand before gearaid) for the PU nylon to fix a hole in my tarp from a boy scout trip, someone tossed a river rock in our fire and it exploded burning a hole in my tarp. That was in 1993 or 1994, I still used that tarp a couple times a year and have not had to replace the seam sealer that I used.
Great. I have this going on right now. I made my own tarp, as I do. Thanks! Hey, Beanie Boy wants to go to the BWCA. I can see it in his eyes! It would be a great time.
Thanks now I dont fell bad my seam seal on my home made tarp is sloppy too. At first I tried just staying on the stitch lines but ADHD and squriles in the yard I got out of line rather quickly. I haven't put side pull outs on yet future project. I wasnt sure exactly where to locate them . Lol
I usually give my seam sealing jobs 24 hours and still use the baby powder. Recently got an Amazon cheapy (I know the mantra, get what you pay for) and it had a tape seal but it wasn't well applied and there was a leaky spot. That's why I backyard test. Anyways, I followed these same instructions and next trip it rained and no more leak.
Thanks Shug, always excited for a new vid. Quick question: New tarp, new trip?? The mandolin at the end is the cherry on top for me personally. Nice pickin'!

Un related to this video , but I have just started using a hammock and love it , I have a ETROL PELICAN hammock, I was hoping you might be able to do a review on it , or perhaps suggesting proper set up for this type of hammock. Thanks , I love and have learned a ton from your videos.
I don’t have one to review. Enjoy yours.

Well after the drying period is over, any issues with how they stuff back I to their stuff sacks? Even after the tacky phase? Will that sealant ever crack due to the stress of being compacted? Great video and appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
I have never had one crack. Stays pliant. My DIY tarps are still going strong since 2007.
Great Tips Shug... I have a couple of ugly tarps as well
Ugly tarps are loyal!
Great. I have this going on right now. I made my own tarp, as I do. Thanks! Hey, Beanie Boy wants to go to the BWCA. I can see it in his eyes! It would be a great time.
He is like my daughter.....more a fan of a spa day than camping!
Lol
I don't trust a pretty tarp.
I found if you stretch the tarp it opens the stitching holes and the sealer goes into the stitching
Too right~
I love watching all of your videos even if I don't have a tarp to seal.
Someday...you may have a tarp to seal. I hope.
Thank you
Y'elcome....
How'd you know I was just finishing my first tarp and wanted to know how to seal it right?! Thanks!
I know things~~haaaa. Enjoy that tarp.
I'm always dubious about a tarp ridgeline seam unless I do it myself or add to existing. Good on ye'!
Thanks for the video Shug. Just a quick note that our tarps are actually SilPoly :) Happy Hangs!
Well I got the Sil part right at least. 🤠
Drink every time Shug says “seam seal”!
Or have a cookie!
@@shugemery Now your talkin. Even better!
Nice video!
Whoooooo Buddy)))))
In case of emergencies, you can probably smear some cheese danish on a leaky spot 😄
And can lick it off when emergency ends!!
Is there an easy way to know what your tarp or tent is made of? I have a DIY tarp and not sure what material it is made of. Thanks for the video Shug.
Silnylon is very slippery. Ripstop nylon less so. Duct tape will not stick to silnylon.
Thanks Shug, always excited for a new vid. Quick question: New tarp, new trip?? The mandolin at the end is the cherry on top for me personally. Nice pickin'!
I'm hoping to get out but I have to have a skin surgery on my nose reconstructed today. A kink in any plans. flic.kr/s/aHBqjzHsyJ
Maybe in a couple weeks I'll get out.
Do you still add talc powder even if it's left out to dry for 14 hrs ect...
I don't one it has set well and good. Only if packing it up within a few days after sealing.
Yup. Every stitch is a leak point.
