An electrifying, powerful and sensitive achievement of directing, acting, cinematography, editing and production. It stands as a complimentary companion film to Dufeys' other phenomenal short film Vertiges.
This is a beautiful, sad, and gorgeously filmed story. The breakup, while painful, was inevitable. But when the kid is a bit older, if they both still have such strong feelings for one another, who knows.....
Triste, mais c'est la vie quand on traverse une telle ligne. The young man, who is precocious, finally says he still doesn't get the chemistry. I'm sure others understood that the chemistry problem is one of attraction. What draws two people to each other? What causes them to revolve around each other and holds them together? Who is the nucleus? Perhaps that isn't important. In this case, the atom is unstable and has to break apart. Fission creates a devastating, powerful nuclear explosion--the outburst on the stairs? For the young man, the explosion is clearly developing from the beginning of the film, a gradual melt-down of his core, yet fission solves the problem for each of them. The wonderful thing is that the young man works it all out, takes charge and then action to free them both from the impossibility of their attraction.
Their attraction to each other is not impossible. It is spontaneous, authentic and valid. The impossibility is due to the rigid societal limitations of their environment.
i dared hope bc it's a film but the moral of the story now and always is, don't give in and act on your attraction to your student/teacher. the suffering will be greater.
WELL, THIS DOES NOT HAVE TO BE BAD. I NOTICED A LOT OF YOU SAYING THAT TEACHER STUDENT RELATIONSHIPS ARE BAD THING. WELL, ALTHOUGH TEACHER STUDENT RELATIONSHIP ARE AWKWARD BECAUSE THEY HAVE CONFLICT OF INTEREST SITUATION, BUT ASIDE THAT, PHISICALLY IT IS NOT SUCH A BIG DEAL. THIS BOY LOOKS LIKE HE IS MOST LIKELY 17 YEARS OLD. IN MOST COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD YOU CAN HAVE RELATIONSHIP WITH PERSON OF AGE 17. IN MOST OF THE COUNTRIES LIMIT (THAT IS, AGE OF CONSENT) IS SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 14 AND 16 YEARS, AND THERE IS EVEN ONE COUNTRY WHERE LIMIT IS 11. ANYWAYS, UNLESS THEY LIVE IN COUNTRY WHERE 18 OR MORE IS MINIMAL AGE, THIS DOES NOT NECCESSERLY HAVE TO BE BAD. I THINK THAT THEY LOOK CUTE TOGETHER. IT IS NOT LIKE HE HAD RELATIONSHIP WITH A 12 YEAR OLD LIKE BOY FROM THE END OF THE MOVIE. SO, 17 IS OLD ENOUGH, AND IF WE PUT ASIDE STUDENT TEACHER RELATION, THEY COULD BE VERY NICE COUPLE. ☺
The age difference, which isn't very great, is not the issue. It is the social circumstances. Teachers cannot have this kind of relationship with their students. It is patently unfair and unequal. This kind of relationship usually, beyond the wrongness of it in the context, will only hurt one or the other or both of the parties involved. One of the bad outcomes is the jading of the younger person prematurely. Young people need to explore love and sex with their peers, not with the adults in their lives. Adults should always be safe havens for the young, not a source of turmoil and conflict. The amazing thing in this short film is the decision of the boy to leave, which is a very mature choice that saves them both. IMHO
@@Richard-zm6pt omfg... so peers of similar age are always sources of comfort, no turmoil, no conflict and unjadedness?... un fuckng believable. Stop the hypocritical moralistic scolding and look at this film in the context of two adult humans whose genuine love and attraction for each other are destroyed by rigid societal taboos.
@@messengerpdx We see things a little differently or saw this story a little differently. I think you drew a lot of conclusions from what I wrote that do not reflect my own views and attitudes or mischaracterize my remarks. The word "always" doesn't apply to anything I said. Platonic relationships are not being discussed. I don't know how you can characterize me as hypocritical or moralistic, and I certainly wasn't scolding; I was musing about the situation. Your final point about the effect of societal taboos may be right, but I don't know.
@@Richard-zm6pt The words I chose in my response to your reply were over-reactive, mis-directed and hypocritically scolding in their own right, for which I apologize especially if they mis-characterize you. There were triggers in your response (as well as other replies in this thread) that initiated strong emotions and my response. While you started your reply with the inappropriateness of the relationship in the context of the student-teacher relationship in a high school setting(which I agree with you), your wording indicates a "wrongness" with the age difference outside of the school context that also has bad consequences...["beyond the wrongness of it in the context, will only hurt..."] "will only" as well as "one of the bad outcomes is the jading" came across as written-in-stone-definitive for an intergenerational relationship regardless of context. The way in which only negative wording(wrongness, jaded prematurely, sources of turmoil and conflict) is used for the intergenerational relationship while for age similar peers the wording is the positive "exploring love and sex" made me interpret your musings as an "always" judgment. Perhaps you've been hurt in a relationship by an older or younger person, which I respect your experience. Certainly my personal perspective, opinions and experience with intergenerational relationships formulates my response and interpretations of the film. Thank you for your response.
First off thanks for the English subtitles! To be honest not sure how to react to this short movie! Seems to be like a boarding school type setting for children of all age groups not exactly an appropriate place for anything to be going on between a grownup and a child and yes, he was a child! The fact that he is now missing out on his education because of an affair with a man there really sucks to be honest! Anyway, thanks for the short movie and touching on a sensitive subject for all to talk about and reflect on!
No, he is not a child. A child is pre-puberty and even puberty is an ambiguous delineation of desire and attraction. The young man you are calling a child initiated interactions based on sexual and emotional attractions...that's adult, regardless of how you think the older man should have responded. The fact that they are both missing out on love because of rigid societal taboos is what really sucks to be honest.
@@messengerpdx This is not Ancient Greece where the men took responsibility of the child or young man his housing education food clothing and so forth when an affair between an older man and someone younger took place! And it was clear in the dialog they had a sexual affair before this latest rejection the man admitted it was wrong and would not happen again if you paid attention.
