      Didn’t realize things needed to be dry! Thanks for making this video! I just bought a countertop compost bin on a whim at target but there were no instructions so was surprised to see that everything was horribly wet and moldy inside after using it for a week.

    I dry bones and eggshells and grind them but sprinkle them directly into my worm bin. Everything else except grease or fat gets composted in a tote before going into the worm bin. The tote is large enough to lasagna fresh waste into one end and take finished compost out the other. Adding to an active bin speeds the process up. The compost bin and worm bin are both in my basement covered with landscape fabric to keep gnats out and it is oderless.

    Very detailed explanation 👍🏻, could you please share the link for the outside compost bin you are using , thank you

    Hello Veronica, thank you so much for sharing. I'm finally trying to get into growing a few fruit trees and vegetables indoors but I live in an apartment. I already use coffee grounds and egg shells for my citrus trees and coffee grounds for my gardenia and Pothos plants. And I've hated throwing out the scraps so looking forward to doing this. But since I can't use an outside compost bin, can I just keep it indoors in a small bin and can I use this compost for my houseplants as well as, for fruit and vegetable plants?😊🙏🏼🙏🏼

      @Cici1791 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would NOT keep your compost going indoors unless you are using a Bokashi, vermicomposting or Lomi setup. Otherwise, you are going to intoxicate your living space with mould and other putrid toxins.

    I have that exact bin in storage. Can I just start throwing stuff in there? Would you recommend that I start it with grass or dead leaves, then add tangerine peels/strawberries/coffee? Or can I just start with that?

    Do you have to stop using the outside compost bin for 30 days for it to decompose? Also how long does it take to fill the outside bin? And how full should it be …. Lots of questions please make another video

    • @MiniUrbanFarm
      @MiniUrbanFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      LoL I'm working on mute compost videos! My bin has 2 compartments. So once one side is full (like 3/4 of the way) then I leave it alone and start filling the other side. Usually it takes me a few weeks to fill up each side but then it can take a few months for it to decompose, depending on what you put inside. If you add things like sticks and whole egg shells then that takes a while. But vegetable scraps and crushed eggshells and lawn clippings decompose much faster. Hope that helps!

    When outside compost bin is is ready for use, can one conceal it in a bag for the following season?

    • @MiniUrbanFarm

      Usually what I'll do is take out the compost and put it in a separate container until I'm ready to use it

    Loving your content! It’s nice to see a full time working mom in a house with a small garden producing so much food! So many women in the same position. It’s really motivating me to get my garden going again. My littlest is six month and oldest is four, so it’s been busy, but I’m not using them as an excuse anymore.
    Have you looked at bokashi composting? I’m looking into it because you supposedly can put meat and dairy products.

    • @MiniUrbanFarm
      @MiniUrbanFarm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Soo glad I could inspire you! I've never heard of bokashi but that'd be great not to waste meat and dairy! I was looking to get into worm composting actually so I'll have to look that up too! Thanks for the recommendation 💕

    short cut put veggie waste thru the blender with alot of water! before you put it in the counter top composter. drain as much water as posible! or if you have a yard, scatter the organic material in the dirt, or grass. I just throw mine water and all on my lawn, and let nature take it's course!

This young woman and her video I found very informative and she is trying to educate and do something nice for the environment that everyone seems to be banging on about theses days. So if you have nothing nice to say then say nothing. Show some respect or is that too much to ask?
