Never once did I think you were hoarding food. Lol. Your family eats 3 meals a day, 7 days a week at home. Of course you are going to need thousands of jars on the shelf. Praise God that you have many helping hands. Love your canning videos ❤️

Absolutely. I have friends say this to me sometimes too. Although we are a family of three we don’t go out to eat very often. I don’t need to go to the grocery store either because I have fresh food at home that I have canned up. It also putting meals on the table quick. We put the work in ahead of time. Plus we know what is going into our food.

First, I applaud you for your patience with clueless people. We are a family of 2 but I can everything I am able to do. People call me out all the time. I just smile. I know what it takes for a family your size. Growing up our neighbors had 14 children. I went there often and learned so much about feeding a large family and frugality. I was an only child and secretly wished I would blend in and they would think I was one of theirs. Lol I'm 74 now .

@@mommabear2many People are losing their minds, I think🤦‍♀😂. They don't seem to understand you are a large family. I'm weighing out all of my food that I've grown so I can figure out the percentage of food we are growing and raising for ourselves. I sure don't have to go to the store as much, which is seriously nice! Inflation is just getting worse. Even if you were hoarding food, you would be right to, especially these days. Some of these people are not going to fair very well if they don't figure things out soon.

One of the bonuses from this challenge is finding out how much we eat of each item. Which we can grow? Which we need to buy in bulk? Which we can stop buying? It is a wonderful experience to get through the challenge and have learned things about yourself and family. Thanks for keeping it real for those of us not as abundantly blessed with so many children.

We are only two as our children are gone and on their own and I still get questioned by some family members about the amount that I can. We are off grid and I can everything from butter to meats to fiddleheads. Its a way of life. When you homestead, you preserve what you grow and hunt. Makes me laugh when people don’t engage brain before making comments. Obviously people have questions which is fair enough, I only have 3 people in my house and a dog so my food consumption is tiny in comparison and I do all my shopping at the grocery store. My question is I would love to have a tour of your pantry! I do love a good look at other people’s food it gives me ideas for my family. I do love your sassy side it makes me smile x

    LOVED YOUR MATH LESSON TODAY.
Sooo many people do not get the MATH when it comes to canning meals for a year per person/family.
    Does your family eat fish??
I am very curious--- How many canning jars do you think you have in your pantry? quarts pints and half pints.
Do you have a vegetable or fruit you do NOT can- as in you hate it?
I love your videos - sooooo real and down to earth!

I'm just starting to can for myself but I'm hoping to slowly work up to a well stocked pantry like yours. My backyard planter garden didn't do well this year, so I'm already thinking about how I can improve it for next year.

We’re now empty nesters and I still garden and can everything possible just so that person who complained, and any others, will have more of those gross canned goods for themselves. I bet they don’t even realize how many food recalls we’ve had in the past few years. In the meantime, we’ll enjoy our years worth of nutritious home canned foods while they make the grocery stores CEO’s richer and lug all those heavy canned foods home from there.

As stated, when you eat at home - 3 meals a day, plus snacks, it adds up! Even for just two people. We have learned how much we consume over the past two and a half years - raising chickens (we eat more chicken than we thought!), raising pigs - butchered one and went through that QUICKLY, and bought half a cow, and I was able to spread it out almost over a year….barely. This does not include any fish, or other muscle proteins - just what we have transitioned to raising ourselves.
You are 100% correct that the daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, however often one does them grocery runs definitely hide the number of pounds of meat or any food we consume. We never considered adding up what we bought over a year before we began raising animals. When you start raising or even growing and preserving food for your family your eyes are opened.
I also had no idea the amount of broth or salsa we used. That was shocking!
There is never a harvest “too big”. Like you mentioned, if the harvest is abundant one year, preserve the way that works best for your family because it may not be as abundant the following year. I thought I had an abundant tomato harvest last year. Turns out we need many more plants than I thought I needed for one year.
This is such a great quick video for helping someone think through the transition and to consider how much is needed. Thank you!

I really can't believe that someone would ask you such a question.
They must not watch many of your videos.
I remember my mom canning for days from our garden and we only had a family of 8.
We also butchered our own animals we raised. They consisted of hogs, cattle, and chickens.
I do know that we butchered at least 3 steers a year, many hogs, and 157 chickens a year.
We sold eggs to help with the cost of feed for the chickens.
We were lucky and grew up on a farm that we had our own crops for feeding the cattle and hogs.
We also had 3 milking cows at all times.
So mom made a lot with the milk and cream that we didn't drink.

I think most people eat out a lot and shop a week or two at a time and have no realistic understanding of what they consume. If they planned ahead or kept a journal of what they used in a year they would understand.
Multiple that by your family size and the amount you need to can makes sense.
We eat high protein low carb and our meat consumption looks insane but it’s necessary for our health.

We generally ooen 2 commercial, 15oz-ish cans of green beans at a meal. This gives plenty on a regulsr night, enpugh on a night one of us is particulary hungry, and a variable volume of left overs. 3×52wks (call it 150 cans, and over 12 dozen or 12 flat cases) is a huge number of cans and your tableis much, much larger than ours.

  • @LadyCinnamon312
    @LadyCinnamon312 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

One last thing. We are only 3 here at home but I do multiply each item by how many I think we will eat in a year. So green beans I did 73 quarts. Honestly I think we could easily go through 150 quarts if we ate them more than once a week but we only had that many. We get all our produce from a local farm share.
We can easily go through 2 cows and a pig and whatever chicken we can get in a year. We have to eat high protein for health reasons. The only thing we may have 2 years of stuff canned is pickles… simply because we did a ton! And I don’t like them lol. My hubby and daughter do but they don’t go through them fast enough to make a dent. We mainly eat meat and veggies, my hubby and daughter do fruit, potatoes and occasionally homemade bread. Simple food simple life.

Ignore the people who question your needs. Like you said, you do you.
They’re the same people who go out to eat 5 times a week and the rest of the meals they open a package. Any canned foods they may eat are full of chemicals and salt.
They use the freezer instead of cans.
I use the freezer for my daily needs, but I buy my emergency foods in cans. I don’t freeze or can my own food much 😢 anymore.
I do rotate through the canned goods to check the expiration dates.
Freezer food does not keep if the electrical grid goes out except during winter months.
Freezers also cost money for electric.
    People have no comprehension.
You eat healthy. The food you can will sustain your family in case of emergency.
