Thank you mahle for the very informative video. I just purchased a set for my 377 build. I would add that I used to use convensional but good motor oil with zinc and diff weights etc. I got on the amsoil train on my last 3 builds, I must say I have learned a lot and am truly impressed. Not only did break in go better, but faster as well.
I used to think orienting the end gaps of the rings was overkill and that the random nature of their rotation would suffice, until we had a short block rebuild Mazda V6 that came back in time and again for smoke and it wasn't until the most experienced mechanic (a pom) on the FOURTH return for excess smoke, pulled the pistons out that we found the rings end gaps all lined up... Blow me down with a feather! I also had a 660cc yamaha single that had been rebuilt and used heaps of oil and fouled plugs regularly that I suspect was a victim of not orienting the ring end gaps (as well)
Great info. Just re-ringed my LQ-4, and noticed the prior ring job hack. While I was comforted to see the rings were gapped .028/.030, but they were installed carelessly, one will all the oil rings aligned, several with the dot facing up, down, facing each other, just whichever way. And, the 1st and 2nd ring was directional. Happy to know I have the right ones in there now.
May I humbly suggest that any cast iron rings be warmed before fitting them as they are so easily broken, and so difficult to replace, sadly I learned the hard way.!
What if the ring 1 and 2 are keep getting stuck in piston and doesn’t move freely? There’s any fix for that or how do I fix that? I have 347 stroker kit.

hello, this is an excellent video, thank you for this work,,, please I will change my connecting rod bearings on a mustang V6 ci 200 from 1966,, can you tell me the tightening torque of the bearings,,, thank you a lot
I'm installing a set of Mahle rings for a 2002 Saab. The second compression ring has no markings except a paint stripe. Am I correct in assuming that this goes to the right hand side when viewing the side of the piston?
Shouldn't the oil rings be orentated? My personal preference is first top ring at 12, and second one at 6. One oil ring at 9 and one at 3 o'clock. Spacer ring don't matter much... but then I'm no professional, just sayin.

I’ve seen so many people use so much crap assembling engines are used to use 30sae non detergent oil and hyper lube 50-50 mix so you’ve got your sticky assembly lube mixed with sae 30
Do you not need to gap the rings specific to the block??? Surely this is a must with any engine build! I always use a feeler gauge etc to gap the piston rings to spec.
@@quidly259 if theyre not file fit. i wouldnt touch em. some are. all power adder/higher performance applications are for sure. but its application specific
No, and to note most of our rings are file fit .005 over. The customer then files the ring down with the correct equipment to get the desired ring gap.
Bought a set of Mahle Original 50785 rings. They had previously been taken out of the box and I am trying to find out which ring should be the 1st and 2nd ring. Both rings have a dot to mark top (up) of the rings. One ring is square with NO bevel and the other is beveled on the top (inside). Which ring would be the 1st ring and which would be the second ring?
Hi Jay, those aren't MAHLE Motorsport rings so I can't speak definitively to that, but I think we can get you going. Which way is the bevel facing? Also, the outside face of the top ring should have a gray/silver look to indicate the coating, that's another good indicator to differentiate the two rings.
OK, there is not distinct color difference as in your video. Both rings have dots on the top to indicate (this side up). Both rings have bevels on the inside ring edge. One has a very small bevel on the bottom side of the ring (opposite side of dot). The other has a larger bevel on the top (dot side) inside edge of the ring. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm having similar issue with my Perfect Circle rings. One ring has a dot and chamfered on the inside top. The other ring has the word TOP on it and chamfered the same as other ring (inside top) I've heard/read that marks always face up, but chamfer s should oppose each other? Ideas? Thanks
Hi Alonso, we have pistons for the 1.8L Turbo, you can find all our listings here: www.us.mahle.com/media/motorsports/2016-app-guide-final-rev1-compressed.pdf

To clarify the top ring on most PowerPaks have a silver look to the outer edge, and the second ring is typically darker in color. A dot or and M signify the top of the ring.

Thanks for the great information guys. I was curious about how much oil to put on the pistons, as well as which type. Very helpful, cheers.

I just bought Mahle rings for my Peugeot 205. Thanks for the information as I'm installing them this afternoon.
The "expander" is the oil ring? A 3-piece assembly?
Thank you so much on orientation of the gaps. This really helped a ton sir.

Precisely what I needed.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Obrigado pelo comentário, tem algum vídeo para montar os anéis da Ford Ranger motor ohv 4.0 ano 1995?
so have a ring black/with dimple/ mark E .... this is the bottom ring ? and i have a chrome ring with no dimple/ mark E .... this is the top ring ?
Chrome would be your top, the black would be your second. If it has a dimple or an E/M that side faces upward.
what about piston ring one set have red and white coating on it
I'm assuming it's top ring one

Did not see if oil support rails were together at bottom or oil ring was between, why only stand piston up instead of showing? 🤨
Awesome video. Very well detailed. “Congrats!”
Great video
So the top ring has a chrome face and the second is black?
Can you use a moly fortified motor oil on start up?
Buenas noches, mi pregunta es como verificó la originalidad de los anillos, ya que hay muchas copias en el mercado.

Well now I fully understand how to address rig gap
Can the oil scraper go upside down?
No, the scraper is designed to face down.
excellent presentation. awesome job.
why you dont use the fitting pliers? all manufactored want it
