    1) Upload your video toast to TH-cam.

    3) Put a link to the video in our comments with the hashtag "#toast".

** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax-deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
    11:27 - boof
    austinwhiskyvault.com/whisky-d...
    ** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

Just got back from a camping trip with my girlfriend and brought a bottle of Knob Creek. I had a mooch's poor before going to sleep the first night, she did not. Next day she can't understand how I slept so good, tell her the whiskey helped. The second night she has some and wasn't a fan at first, but it grew on her. So for the rest of the trip she needed some of my Knob to help her sleep. Cheers!

I'm from West Virginia, so when I heard about Smooth Ambler, I HAD to check them out. I went down to the distillery for Big Level and Old Scout 107, and they give free tastings on five of their products. Daniel and Rex are spot on with the notes! These whiskies are so good. Thanks for the MB that sent them to the Vault.

If I remember right, "wheated bourbon" just means that the 2nd most plentiful grain in it is wheat (after the 51% corn). Usually that second most used grain is rye.

Hey guys, have you tried any Finnish whiskies?
We have a couple of distilleries that make some really nice small batch whiskies. One called Teerenpeli makes single malts that are very fun to try. And then kyrö distillery makes a 100% rye whiskie, they started by making gin called napue and now are moving to whisky also.
It would be wonderfull if you could get your hands on some of these.
Thanks for the great content, keep it up.

So I found out what they do is “age” whiskey in the bottle. They call it the “spire” the toast and char the spires how you would normally do on a barrel. The spires they use can be white oak, French oak, cherry, maple woods I messaged them to see if they’ll tell me if they source or distilled their own whiskey

This is a very blue collar look for Rex. I like it. But I think when Rex is sporting this look they should concentrate on Campbeltown whisky because they've always conjured up blue collar images for me. The denseness, oilyness and earthyness of those whiskies bring to mind industrial, construction and farming. Perhaps we can have a theme day when they dress to suit the whisky. :)

So good news Daniel.... On October 9, 2017, Diageo announced that it will re-open the Brora distillery with production resuming in 2020. Just putting it out there also will you be attempting to get some of that Warehouse 30 collapse reclamation bourbon from Barton/1792.... just saying you can taste that scarcity! wink wink

That's a hell of an episode, man... Awesome. I learned a lot of whisky stuff. I want that red bottle. I'll have to try to find that.
It's like I want to know who is making Daniel's life tough, but then I remind myself I'm here to watch a whisky video... but... I want to join Daniel's posse and go take out those dudes who are giving him a hard time... I mean... (ahem) clearing throat... I mean go help Daniel while obeying all laws and while being totally civil to my fellow man... Ya, that.
    Great video... Cheers!

What would you recommend for someone looking for someone way out there. I really enjoy wines that’s are like nothing I’ve had before I enjoy the unique and different and have been experimenting with whisky for about a year and enjoyed everything I’ve had so far. So I’m trying to find whiskys that are NOT your traditional flavor profile but it’s not as easy as finding a wine from an uncommon region it seems. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I'm surprised Rex is still in these video's seeing how he was recorded killing/murdering a bald eagle which is protected under the Migratory Bird Act and still considered an endangered species. I figured he would be on his way to Mexico to live out his remaining years mooching high quality Tequilla. Question for the tribe, since he murdered the eagle should it still be featured in the MB screenshot? Love what you do boys, keep up the good work.

In episode 193, there’s a mention of cigars. I started out smoking cigars before I got into whiskey and being able to dissect different cigar flavors, read into how they are made and find how the flavor profile changes as you smoke a stick is the whole reason why whiskey all the sudden made sense to me. Would you guys ever consider doing a small series on cigars and potentially cigar whiskey pairing?

There are similar spirals of wood that are available for sale to basically make crappy whiskey taste better. In my personal opinion it doesn’t make it better by itself but from some playing around with it. One thing you can do is soak it in sherry or rum or basically anything that’s barrels are usually used to finish whiskeys in. Basically to add a little flavor too. One other thing you can do which is much less class and a little more hillbilly is put on in either vodka or moonshine and it will have a similar affect as barrel aging. But not quite as good

I wonder if the “sour funky leathery green” in smaller crafts is a function of oxidation, mishandling of barrels... seems like age of the whiskey compared with the larger distilleries is comparable, but they have better barrel-handling techniques? Or do they just get bad barrels? (seems unlikely or they’d seek out better ones). Anyone know?

Oak and Eden's website FAQ says they source and that they plan to have a distillery one day...FAQ gives the mash bill and a few other tidbits. Ohh Hayy there Daniel and Rex! Hope alls good, being malted up, and venting surly banter.
I have a serious question, in regards to muffing heavier peating / Islay distillery whiskies. I do apologise this coming off like a novella, but needed to, in giving some snippet of backstory.
I've always been told if one can handle bold / spicy foods, have great odds in coping with more intense liquors - aka, Scotches / smoked whiskies. NOw I can totally enjoy the HECC outta spicy foods from Jamaica, India, Ethopia, etcetera etcetera. I've unfortunately cannot take in these heavier smoked whiskys, without going through a violent fit of coughing, before actually drinking the damn thing, which in turn would be sustained violent fit of coughing and invert a lung #asthmasucks #laphroaigisouttokillme (my PAINful threshold is to Highland Park; not pretty at all, but its there). Have you guys encountered means of alleviating the smokiness, that would not need to do a blending of whiskies? Now in the case of blending (which I am willing to do; have a Japanese Whiskey that'll likely NEED it), are they any go-to whiskey/bourbon pairings (and respective ratio), that'll tone things down towards manageable levels? In the meantime, I need to go stand up next to my bicycle, because its two tired
Hope the distillery progress is going to pace; would like to visit the grounds next time I'm back in home country, and take in Austin area for 1st time (got yanked away from TX too young). While you're awaiting your final aged product(s), are you looking to source a base alcohol elsewhere, towards making the desired palette? Or looking to produce other items (Gin, unaged alcohols, etc), as your development period / startup cashflow?

Whisky Prepping and Pairing. From watching your videos, it’s clear that you guys have the ATFs recommended 3 month reserve of drinking spirits in case of national emergency. But what would you drink it with?
Continuing my pairing experiments, I opened a can of Russian Tushonka. It’s basically slow-cooked beef roast in bay-leaf seasoned sauce that gives it an undeniable dog food aroma when first opened. But, it’s canned to last until Russia has an actual democratic election, so basically forever. This can was only a few years old...
Heated on the stove and mixed with rice, I see why it is up there with French MREs as the go-to prepper’s food of choice for those... special meals.
I chose Lagavulin 16, Macallan 3rd ed., Glenmorangie Nectar D’or, and Oban Little Bay. The OLB is just good for what ails ya, and I’m king of going through an affair type thing with it right now, so I’m far from objective. The Saltiness of the meat and bay leaf are the main pairing flavors. The very tender meat and beef fat are the mouth elements at play.
There are basically 3 things a pairing can do. 1. Match, 2. Augment, or 3. Modify the taste, and all three happened in these pairings.
OLB I found matched with the saline but balanced with the light sweetness. M3ed. augmented with its complexity like the beef had been cooked with fruits and spices. It wasn’t overwhelming enough to really change the core meal. The D’Or did though, modifying the taste to one of eating the beef with a fruit chutney.
The L16 was the major Modifier though. From the first sip, I was immediately eating bar-b-que! Heavy, Smokey BBQ.
Conclusions: you can (and probably should) drink OLB with anything. The M3 was the least pleasant pairing for me, but that would likely not be the case for someone who drank Macallan more often. The D’Or was delightful, as a salty beef and a sweet chutney is already a good thing. This is my choice for ‘best’ pairing for a global SHTF scenario.
That said, no matter what you are eating repeatedly, it will get old after a while, even if it’s keeping you alive. (There’s a relationship metaphor there somewhere..). In this case, the L16 will save the day. Having that BBQ flavor will be a life-saver. And it will probably help take the edge off a nuclear winter as well.
Here’s to Whisky, Prepping, and Pairing!

Sorry, but while I might have a little bit of time for fun, shenanigans, and socializing, I have none at all for in-depth research to get "quality" upvotes.

I'd like to see what would happen if you attempted to "proof up" one of those budget bourbons you feel is missing something by being only 40%, by using that 199 proof polish moonshine you got on a previous donation.

It's not the alcohol content though, it's the dilution of the flavors after the distillery cut the % down. Adding tea leaves to weak coffee doesn't fix the problem of the coffee being weak in the first place.

surfacingcom The difference here being that they cut the alcohol % by adding water. The stuff I mentioned is 99%+ alcohol. It would literally be raising the liquors alcohol % back up. Would it give it more burn or bite, cut some of the oils, open up some of the alcohol soluble flavors more. Or, do nothing but make it harsh. It's an experiment. I'm curious.

1:00 daniel has admitted that he cannot function without a drink, and that he drinks when he is "in a bad place". Chad, it is time for you to reach out to him, maybe take over.

That Scottish guy that does recycled reviews pronounces it Clinn (rhymes with bin)-leash.

That Scottish guy is Roy, AKA Aqvavitae. He pronounces it clinn-leash, and Ralfy pronounces it the same way that Daniel does.
