Easy fix, ban commercial expeditions. You want to climb Everest? Arrange it yourself and climb it yourself. Like it used to be. But Nepal wants that money from commercialization and allows it, so they are not entitled to whine about it. Sorry, but it is true.
When I climbed Everest the Sherpa are a different breed .they carry everything so my personal Sherpa I gave him 10k dollars when I finished that hike. He said nobody tips them and they only make a few grand risking their lives everyday .
I have read often times the Sherpa's pay is extremely low. Most of their pay are tips. It's nice you tipped. I would assume this was a generous tip? I truly do not know what is average or generous. I have also read there have been people who either didn't tip or gave their Sherpa barely anything. Nepal is a poor country. They have commercialized climbing Mt Everest. Some climbers have very little experience and climb anyway because of the commercialization. So many have died either for the money or rich people wanting to gloat with friends over the fact they climbed Mt Everest. Who would ever want to do this in a line with 100 other people? If one person in line becomes ill, untethering to get around that person is a big risk in itself. If I were a professional mountaineer, Mt Everest would no longer be appealing.
The entitled behaviour of the climbing teams has been shameful. Most would have been well aware they were taking advantage of the community by leaving their garbage but nothing was ever done voluntarily. The sherpas are the hero’s.

“A bit of a head scratcher” when talking about the yaks and reduction of helicopters. No, no tf it is not a head scratcher. Whoever wrote the script for this video is absolutely apart of the problem. Everest is not your yearly vacation destination, it is not where you go to base camp to spend a week when you want to experience the wilderness. And unless youre fully committed to devoting every second of your time to climbing preparation (no lounging on couches and sipping tea while having a laugh) or fully devoted to the support system of those climbers, then you don’t freaking belong at base camp. The reversion to yaks makes perfect sense, the issue is that there is too many people on the mountain and too many of those people are completely care free. It is that simple, there is too many people. If you have an issue with traveling by yak and were expecting a helicopter transport so you can get an easy ride all the way to base camp, then you don’t belong on the mountain in the first place. The trek to base camp with all your tents, food and water, and climbing gear or materials has stood as a proving ground for decades. If you have an issue with doing that trek the “old fashioned way”, then you don’t belong on the mountain.
They should have a limited Permit Draw program for each season for say 100 permits. Come up with a system to give preference points to verified experienced climbers. It shouldn't be about how much money you have to spend, but how much dedication and experience you bring to the team/endeavor.
It use to be that way. You couldn't step foot on Everest without having climbed at least three 8000ers before applying for a permit. The government changed that rule a few years ago. A lot of experienced climbers are still upset about it. I don't blame them either.
@@chasecoughlan1038 couldn't you just charge more money for fewer spots? There would be fewer Sherpa crews employed but we've established the government doesn't really care about them anyways. Better idea would be to police the agencies that offer the trips, ensuring that they are vetting prospective climbers for suitability and experience with challenging climbs. There are companies that do this anyway but the lure of a fairly hefty sum of money means some companies will overlook this in favour of simply taking anyone who has a big enough bank account. And if someone gets turned down by the more discerning agencies then the lure is that they’ll just go to the more unscrupulous places and hand over the money anyway. I’m a scuba diver myself who’s training for cave diving. I’m still very much a beginner and the agency I train with lays it out clearly that you can’t just speedrun your way to being an advanced cave diver by getting out the chequebook. You need to actually be in a cave and doing a bunch of dives to build up experience and key skills.

I did the Everest Trek in 1979. Even then, Base Camp was notorious for being an emormous pile of litter and abandoned equipment. I was advised to go up to Kala Pattar on Pumori's flank, and keep climbing until you couldn't. (This was on bare rock and involved nothing remotely technical.) At about 18,600 feet it started to get difficult, so I stopped. A tiny sliver of the South Col was visible at that point. A glorious view in every direction!

Certified summiting of three other 7,000+ meter peaks (of which there are dozens in the Himalayas) before you even get to go to Everest. It would spread around the work for guides and benefits to the local economy away from that one mountain (Everest), and it would reduce crowding and accidents on Everest because only proven, tried and tested climbers would get to even be there. The 'mystique' of summiting Everest would go back to climbers who have earned it by previous hard mountaineering experience and previous support to the local economy.

When you want to summit Everest. First you spend 100,000 dollars or more to “buy” a permit. It goes downhill from there.
Nepalese government has Everest as their cash cow. They are not going to do anything that curtails their ability to make money . The greatest ability to promote safety would be to not allow people who don’t know what they are doing to even attempt the climb. They can throw all the technology they want at the mountain, but if they don’t police the access to the mountain, all the poop bags in the world won’t change anything.

It use to be that way. You couldn't step foot on Everest without having climbed at least three 8000ers before applying for a permit. The government changed that rule a few years ago. A lot of experienced climbers are still upset about it. I don't blame them either.

Certified summiting of three other 7,000+ meter peaks (of which there are dozens in the Himalayas) before you even get to go to Everest.
