I think you missed a VERY important tip: If it is at all possible, ( i know some machines don’t have this option, but Harvest right does) set your machine to no higher than 105 ( 95 ideally) I have been dehydrating and freeze drying for years for culinary and medicinal reasons. It is so important to keep the volatile oils within the herb in tact and keeping it at this temperature will give you the best quality outcome.
Have you freeze dried feverfew and if you have or an herb like it, do you remove the leaves and flowers from the stem? I’m ready to do mine and I’m kind of nervous. Thank you.
@@glorytogodhomestead3495 Indeed I have. I freeze dried the flowers and leaves. I cut only about 6 inches with the hopes of getting another flush of flowers before seasons end. Those I save for tea. However at some point I will cut some stems to add to whatever I can harvest in order to make a tincture
What are your low temp setting for herb drying? I've only ever run my tray temp in the 50s. I thought these machines needed to get below freezing to remove moisture as temp rises, but cant see plant matter doing well at freezing. Any info you can give on temp setting during the process would be appreciated.

Hello Angela You are one of the best presenters on the you tube, I watch lots of videos all day and I can tell your videos are full of interesting information and has no unwanted saying. My idea of watching videos is to get educated and learn without knowing what name to suggest for your new born piglets (lol there are plenty of people who ask these questions) and also you don’t have any music playing while telling your thoughts. Only thing I can say is to May be make more videos, I know it’s hard to find good content to make videos but this is my personal expectation. Happy holidays and new year to you and your family.
Thank you so much. I have a full docket of videos scheduled for the new year. I'd love to hear if you have other topics you'd like to see covered as well.
Hi Angela I would like to know how you plan all the crops you grow. Do you sell too like market garden or just for personal consumption I will let you as the time goes by, all your videos are of great value and great content.
Would you be able to link the jars and lids that you used for storage? Wonderful video. I’ve watched your videos for a couple of years as I began my first gardening adventures. I just bought a freeze dryer this summer so this is awesome!
Thank you for sharing your ideas. I watched your video and did a batch of basil leaves. I can smell basil in my freeze dryer. I also watched your guacamole video. Now, I want to try that too, as I just finished a batch of avocados. I was wondering how you clean your freeze dryer after you do garlic, basil and other strong smelling items to help mitigate that smell getting into the next batch. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you.
Got them all in after cleaning I had a snail, prayed that all of them were removed, LOL. I did turn the heat down to 105 and now we wait! I put basil, oregano and sage in
Thank you for this :) I was looking at my overgrown cilantro just this morning. When you store them, do you use an O2 absorber? I've found freeze drying enhances flavours, so it's surprising that you need to use more than when they are fresh cut. I can't wait to try them.
I use an o2 absorber if I'm storing larger amounts. If it's a jar I'll be in and out of and use quickly then I don't. Try the amounts and add them to taste. I tend to have a heavy hand with herbs - I like a lot of flavor. Add to your liking.
Thanks for doing these videos! Question, do you every use a vacuum sealer to pull out the air in the mason jar? Do you think it will help make freeze dried items stored in mason last longer?
A harvest right is in my dreams, unfortunately not my budget. Can you add a link to your home page for your book? Your wisdom is down to earth but so valuable! TY for sharing with us. Blessings!
When I first saw this I thought it look like a washing machine with shelves behind you. I never thought of having my own freeze dry machine! Duh! If it wasn’t for the fact I was just hit with a enormous and I do mean in enormous vet bill (4x’s the cost of the freeze dry machine and I’m not through) I would definitely consider this. I will have to keep this in mind and save for it in a future year. 👍
How long does it take you to freeze dry the herbs? I'm freeze drying ginger, tumimac and horseradish. It seems to be tajing longer then it took me to freeze dry beef liver.🤔 Thanks I just boticed your MT at below 200. My MT is at 1200.
You say air-tight lids... Do you use the plastic lids or do you vacuum seal with metal lids? Do you use an O2 absorber? How long do you find that the herbs stay fresh once you have opened the jar? Thank you!

Excellent point. Thank you for making it. I learned about that option after making this video. I appreciate the added insight!

I just freeze dried a batch of herbs for the first time. I was surprised how little time it took. No more wasting herbs. Thanks Angela.
Thankyou Angela it’s always a pleasure to see you post your tips and ideas. I throughly enjoy your videos.

Thank you Angela! Always great videos! Merry Christmas and Happy new year
Great video. Just curious, do you lower your heat? If so, what setting? Thanks!
We love our freeze dryer so much. Thank you for your videos about it. They give us so many great ideas.
You are so welcome!
I ❤ your content,it’s always so useful ,well presented and straightforward. 😊
Great video,,but I don’t have a freeze dryer what else can I use
Dehydrating and/or freezing is also a good option.
Lovely Exactly what I needed to know. Going to do it now. Thank you

Angela is de best. Toot toot 🥰
Thanks for watching!
what temp do you set your freeze dryer for dry temp
😍😍😍😍😍😍
You say air-tight lids... Do you use the plastic lids or do you vacuum seal with metal lids? Do you use an O2 absorber? How long do you find that the herbs stay fresh once you have opened the jar? Thank you!
I use plastic with O2 - but the vacuum seal would be better. The flavor is best for about a year after opening.
What temp should the freeze dryer be on?
Between 95 and 105°F
What dry temp do you use for herbs?
There isn't a temperature setting on my freeze dryer - it's automatic
@@GrowingInTheGarden No, it’s not. There most certainly is a dry temperature. It’s on Customize, Dry Temp.
Whats a capacity of your freeze dryer
Medium from Harvest Right
Can you freeze dry without a fancy freeze drying machine????
No - you need the machine to do the process.
The only reason I watched this video is because your thumbnail showed a jar of lemon grass, yet you said zero about that herb.
Same tips apply for that herb too. You can read more here: growinginthegarden.com/how-to-grow-harvest-divide-and-use-lemongrass/
Interesting, but way out of my budget.
Great tips! Thank you.
