FINALLY, someone who is thorough. You are the first to include the change in temp of the FD. Thank you so much. This is the 1st time I've found your site & i will be watching more.
Appreciate that, thank you 💗
Thank you so much for creating such a detailed helpful video. I was specifically on a search for how to freeze dry herbs and this is by far the best video I came across.
I freeze dried my carrot tops for soups and to flavor my stocks. They smell so good.
Fantastic video! Very helpful, right to the point with no extra fluff. Thank you for doing small batches for demonstration. And I love your enthusiasm for herbs. Thank you so much!
Best, most detailed video to freeze drying herbs!
Thanks!
Thank you for the video! Just got my freeze dryer and want to start freeze drying my garden herbs
This is an excellent presentation in terms of the video, information, and use of the selected herbs. You do a great job with the verbal discussion as well. I think the use of the cheese cloth is a good idea which I will do next time. Also turning down the drying temperature is a good idea. I have share and recommended your video to others.
I have a freeze dryer and have contemplated doing herbs. We will be planting our garden in the next couple of weeks and I am definitely going to be planting some herbs. This is exactly the information I was looking for. THANK YOU!
You go girl! Great video! Very aspirational for me...perhaps someday a freeze dryer. ❤☮🌎
Great instruction video! Thank you!
I am so happy you made this video!!!! I have a freeze dryer and a bunch of herbs outside (on their 3rd year for the perennials!!) and now I know what to do! THANK YOU!!! Loved your video. Love your book!!!!
Thanks! 🥰
Thank you !
Oooh cheesecloth is a great idea. Tho I would have wondered if it would blow around. Great vid! Now, excuse me while I go cook up some of the garlic butter summer squash from your freezer book …
😊😊
This is the first time that I am hearing about the freeze drying process. I put some of the herbs in the common freezer (parslley, chives, celery), but it takes up a lot of space. If I will buy the dry freezer, I will definitely buy it through your link.
Appreciate that, thanks 💗
Great idea will this work for spinach as well.
since i don't have a freeze dryer, just curious @karmengosenca4702, the regular freezer does work?? thanks for your help.
@@DMB_SUNGLASSESGUY Yes, but you have to keep the herbs in the freezer all the time. So, I meant freezing, as in keeping in the freezer. :D Eventually some "ice" can accumulate, but that's it. They keep the colours and taste. Way better than regular dry herbs. But it mainly works for the herbs that I mentioned. At least for me. Thyme, oregano, for example - these I dry in a "normal" way and didn't find them that good, when freezed. :)
I pluck the leaves or chop them and put them in recycled plastic packaging. Hope this helps.
That was an excellent video. I am going to use your link.
Have you ever tried freeze drying lemongrass ?
Thanks! And I haven’t, no!
Can you freeze dry Stevia and how. with or without stems?
I haven’t tried stevia but I’d do it like basil/parsley/sage.
I'd like to see the rehydration of these leafy greens. I can't seem to find any on youtube. Is it because it doesn't come out right?
They aren’t purposely rehydrated, that’s why. You add them to what you’re cooking like any other dried herb.
My question please is can you make ointments and salves out of freeze dried herbs?
I was looking for this answer too!
Yes, I do. But I FD the herbs prior to infusing in oil. Is that what you meant?
For end-of-season harvest, I'm considering pureeing a large quantity of mint with a little water, then pouring that in the tray to maximize yield. Have you tried this yet?
I have not, but I wonder if puréeing it releases a lot of essential oils and could full the flavor.
Have u done cilantro? Also, was that your basil that had black leaves after drying? Is that ok?
That’s a purple variety of basil you’re seeing there that looks dark. Yes, cilantro works amazing like this too!
oxygen absorbers?
She’s. Do many Americans have all these different pieces of equipment in a private home?
Not a lot. A freeze dryer is a BIG investment.
Is there a way we can preserve them without a freeze dryer
You can preserve herbs in a lot of other ways besides freeze drying, yes!
Dehydrate
Can you freeze dry without a freeze drying machine?
Nope
After freeze drying strong smelling herbs, will your next batch of freeze dried food taste like the herbs you dried?
I haven’t found that, no.
Would freeze drying lavender make any sense?
Hmm… I haven’t tried it or seen anyone do it, but I bet it would work. The buds might be more brittle/crumbly than just regular dried. Something to consider depending on how you want to use it.
Yes, then I crumble them into homemade soap or infuse into oils
Can I use my dehydrator instead ?????
You can dehydrate basil yes, but it won’t turn out quite like this.
I have done both. The freeze dryer tastes more like fresh. BUT it is a pricey investment.
I have a question, being from the UK, why is it that you and other americans cannot pronounce the word "HERB" correctly it is pronounced herb with an H not erb.
Firstly, Google is your friend! Secondly, it's a silent H in America. Many countries pronounce things differently. You must be aware of 50 other words *in this video alone* that are pronounced differently than the way it's said in the UK ☠️
Herb is a French word. Why would you pronounce the “H” when you borrow it?
@@princessLailasmomAre Americans speaking French now? 😂
@@annwilliams6438 no but they’ll steal words from anyone
America is a melting pot of people from all over the world, different cultures, speaking different languages. So, I may use "erb" and my neighbor could say "herb" depends on where you live and where your family's from... We know what the other person means...
