Unity in purpose, while deeply hurt both characters understood that this was necessary in order to deceive the opposition, so that they would let their guard down. It also shows the level of determination and willingness to bear pain. It is also why it is impacting you so much. Modern society has forgotten that the meaning of life is sacrifice.
"I, Akechi Mariko, protest this shameful attack by Lord Ishido" Instead of Toda Mariko, she used Akechi, her fathers name. She dropped her husbands name just before her death.
Mariko was Toranaga's queen. It was always Toranaga's plan to sacrifice her. When Mariko showed up and called Ishido's bluff... It was as Ochiba said... if she leaves, Ishido loses his leverage... if she dies, Ishido has a revolt on his hands... Toranaga used Mariko to back Ishido (and Ochiba) into a corner... Kidnapping her was his only move left, and woud foil Toranaga's plan. Mariko could NOT allow that to happen. The best chess players know how to get the checkmate by sacrificing the queen when necessary. I think Mariko went to Osaka knowing she was doomed to die to further Toranaga's plan. As she told John, death can also have meaning. The next episode is going to blow your mind.
It’s important to notice that Mariko is blown up in front of the door by proclaiming herself Akechi Mariko, not Toda Mariko. In her mind, she was no longer Buntaro’s wife. Also, just in case it’s not known, Ochiba means fallen leaf(leaves) in Japanese. Knowing this makes marikos poems (especially the ones she shared with Toranaga in the last episode and the one she shared in this episode) VERY meaningful and lady Ochiba heard the message Yabushige and others didn’t. In front of everyone “while the snow remains/ veiled din the haze of the cold evening/ a leafless branch” To Toranaga last episode “if I could use words/ like scattering flowers and fallen leaves/ what a bonfire my poem would make” As for the jigai scene (women don’t seppuku - only samurais do. Women and non samurai try to pierce their hearts). Blackthorn offering to second was 1) if she doesn’t dieby having head chopped off, Mariko ends up killing herself making it a mortal sin where she is condemned to hell for eternity. Blackthorn was offering to take off her head before she dies so HE would go to hell (for killing) instead of Mariko. Thus his line “hell is no place I haven’t been” (something to that effect). Mariko asks Anjin to “please wait until I’m fallen” telling him not to cut off her head before she’s dead because she can’t bear the thought of Anjin going to hell instead of her. 2) as much as blackthorn didn’t agree with Mariko ending her life, the thought of her having to do it alone behind the screen doors where it could take quite a long time before she died (in agony ) was too much for him to bare. He wanted Mariko to know that he loved her, respected her need to do what she believed she needed to do to be true to herself. Something Buntaro never was able to understand.
They touch on it, but in the book, when Mariko mentions how she is "not a peasant", it was meant as an insult towards Ishido, who was born a peasant and rose to the Samurai rank, instead of being born nobility.
as the taiko also came from lowborn beginnings, you'd think ishido would be held in better regard, but no. 😄 if the marriage did go through with ochiba, he would've been the stepfather of the future emperor and the most powerful lord in japan!
@@vinsanity40k Not the emperor, the Taiko's son. The emperor is out of this game altogether, just chilling in Kyoto and having no power at this time. He's slightly present in the book, as an additional point of pressure on Toranaga, here they just cut him out entirely.
You guys are correct. Mariko was sent to Osaka in order to expose that Ishido is holding many noble families hostage. By confronting him as she did, he was forced to either let her commit seppuku (which would be admission of guilt) or let them all go (freeing them to potentially go over to Toronaga).
Thank you, Nikki & Steven, so much for your thoughtful and heartfelt reaction to this episode, and to the series. Akechi Mariko was based on the real-life Akechi Tama, Christian name Gracia (“Grace”). Her father betrayed the Taiko’s predecessor. He was the great general Akechi Mitsuhide. Oddly he’s now revered as a model of duty (to the country) over loyalty (to his lord). My family and I live about a mile from where his head is buried. I hope y’all can make it to Japan someday.

Best episode of the season imo. Such a fantastic show that always goes in directions you didn’t expect. I love how the show makes us feel so lost sometimes bc of the vast cultural differences, it really mirrors John’s experience of being constantly surprised by what happens and unable to truly understand. But he showed such love and maturity and trust when he agreed to second Mariko. He didn’t understand or agree but he loved her so he just did what she wanted. I love their relationship. Can’t wait to see the reaction for the final episode. What a show!
The book is heavily based on historical events, just an incredibly beautiful and dramatised retelling. I'm actually very against a 2nd season because there's no way it lives up to the beauty and subtle writing of the book. But there is a ton of history to draw from for a 2nd season. I just don't think it will be anywhere near as atypical as season 1, which as Steven said, he was expecting more blood and fights given the subject matter, but this is exactly what makes this season so unique. It subverts every expectation.
Glad to see your reaction to this episode this morning. Always enjoyable to watch and this was just an incredible episode to get through emotionally. I might have been holding my breath throughout when watching it earlier this year, lol. Episode 10 is more of a denouement where they kind of wrap up the story of the characters in the novel but don't touch on the historical battle, not yet at least. Toranaga, like the historical Tokugawa, was more of a subterfuge type of leader. Rarely ever says exactly what he's thinking, and anything that he tells his subordinates in the open is meant to be misdirection regarding "Crimson Sky" XD. Remember the three hearts ;-). Variety did a Breaking Down a Scene featurette of Lady Mariko's fight at Osaka Castle if you're interested.
I think it's fascinating how reactors respond with denial or even anger to the realisation that Mariko is going to die. She said it herself: There's every need. From her standpoint and in her culture, it's a good ending. A tragic ending, but a good one.
The story is very strongly based on the lives of historical figures, and there's plenty more that happened to them after this. There certainly is a lot of material to use for the continuing story of the surviving characters.
Ishido didn't want people thinking that they were captive in Osaka, which Mariko proved was actually the case. If they see that Mariko can't even leave, then why would anyone else be allowed to leave the city, high born or low born? So it was a ploy to turn Ishido's subjects and "guests" against him.
The reality was more complicated. ‘Mariko’s’ father did betray and murder ‘ochiba’s’ uncle - the de facto ruler of japan at the time - but ‘ochiba’s’ uncle also murdered her father (his brother in law) and infant brother. ‘Toranaga’ was the third in command of ‘ochiba’s’ uncle and ‘mariko’s’ husband was an ally of ‘toranaga’. The rest is correct. But the rivalry between ‘mariko’ and ‘ochiba’ was really because of ‘toranaga’ - not ‘mariko’s’ father, whose real name was Akechi Mitsuhide. The ‘heir’s’ claim to power comes from his great uncle through his mother - oda nobunaga (the first ‘uniter’ of japan, killed by akechi mitsuhide) - and his father, Hideyoshi Toyotomi (the second uniter of japan). The council of regent’s always feared the power of ieyasu tokugawa, because he was nobunaga’s third in command and became the third, and final, uniter of japan. "Crimson sky" actually happened 15 years after the end of the story told in Shogun, and was the final showdown between the Toyotomi and the Tokugawa.
I remember so many people complained this episode didn't have a huge battle or army (Crimson Sky) in it but I was happy, honestly really moved by this episode. Toronaga didn't need a huge army, he just needed one woman.

Toranaga from what I can see actually has the emblem that the real Tokugawa clan used and at the end the guards being killed are all wearing the Toranaga emblem so it's his compound in the castle that is being attacked. It's such amazing attention to detail and carries across the whole show.
Slow down, the initial sword fight at the gate to see how awesome it actually is. The Toranaga swordsman makes his first cut at the threat, cutting off his fingers so he cannot draw his sword, deals with the second threat, and then returns to finish the first target.
Another great episode another great reaction, but Nikki and Steve and to anyone who has not yet done so PLEASE READ THE B00K!!!.
