  • Hey guys, Is trimming your onions good or bad? I'm trying a couple of experiments to see. Will trimming onions actually make your bulbs bigger, or will it hurt their growth? Watch the video and see what I'm doing to try and find out. Here's a link to my previous video on onions and please be sure to read the comments. Thanks for watching.

Hey, I can't wait to see the results from trying this. I really do want to see if trimming onions makes any difference. I'll be sure to keep everyone updated. Thanks for watching.

Some types of onions grow scapes ,just like garlic, they need to be trimmed to get a bigger onion bulb but cutting off too many bend over shoots I think maybe I would just leave alone. Have a great day .

@WildernessWarriors791 Thanks for sharing that. Maybe what you mentioned is something that could confuse people into thinking every type of onion needs trimmed. Great comment. Good to hear from you.

Hi, i wouldnt cut them off at the bend . I would cut it off at the base , but only one per plant. You can eat the one one you cut off. The onions will contine to grow even if the tops do bend.

Thanks for sharing. That's a different way of doing it. I don't want to make this too complicated, but maybe I'll try just cutting one bent one on a plant to see if it comes out different. Great comment.

My husband did those two steps and it has done so well. I think it will be a success. I hope it works for you.

Where you cut them the ends will dry up and close up so no bugs can get in there in my area in Utha at over 5700 feet in elevation

I will definitely keep an eye on this when I check my onions. Thanks for sharing this. I really appreciate the feedback, and thanks for watching.

At the bulking stage if the weight of the tops bending over causes the whole neck to bend then yeah it will cause it to stop growing. I trim when they are babies too.

Does trimming when they're young help them get bigger? In the end, do the tops get bigger?

    • @gardenandgrease

@@jonbussey5353 it helps them get thick and strong early on. I trimmed mine 2x b4 going out. But I start mine from seed.

I did read that people will cut them when they start from seed, especially if they use grow lights. Thanks for sharing. Good advice.

With all those tasty onion leaves, I see a bunch of tasty additions to your weekend cooking!
YOu could also dry the trimmed tops and save them for soups and stews.
I wouldn't jump to trim leaves. The hollow nature of the onion leaves seems like it would trap water inside or allow for insects and possible disease. I look forward to seing what you/we learn from this experiment! Thank you for being willing to try this experiment out so that I won;t have to with my own!

That's the same conclusion I came to, and a few articles said the same, cutting the tops can lead to diseases and pests. One person left a comment saying they would close up. I guess we'll find out. If this helps people, I'm more than happy to sacrifice a few plants. Thanks for the advice on what to do with the tops. And I hope your garden is doing great. Thanks for the comment.

Never grown red onions, only bunching onions. If they are anything alike then i guess the reason for trimming their tops is to prevent the plant from going to seed. When bunching onions go to seed i believe they stop growing underground. That's my guess, or that they cut the tops to add to a salad which would make it delicious 😅

You're very correct. That's why I was very specific about the kind of onion I was talking about in the video. Thanks for sharing the difference in certain varieties of onions. This goes along with a lot of the things I read. Thanks for watching. I appreciate it.

i was trying to find some info my self, and ended up geting these guys growing for show starting to pop up on my youtube.gardening with john soulsby\time to start the giant onions, was quite intresting, didnt tuch the topic of trimming, but i havent started to binge watch him yet, im going to check more of his work out, seems like he have grown a onion ore two before, and i learnd about onions pips, that i never have heard about before:)seems like a intresting teknikk. my average on onion growing are about 2 inches across, so i kind of had given up on cepas, and have dubbeld down on garlic, chives, welsh, spring and E.walking onions, but this onion thalk have made me want to try again, so i orderd carmen, stuttgart risen, wolska and alisa graig seeds from poland, maybe il beat my average with some 2 and a half inch onions:) the alisa graig should have some potensial. red gardens have some intersting onion experiments from seed, as well, if you have time to watch more youtubers;) but i belive the most impotrant here is that we all enjoy ore time in the garden, and have fun with our experiments;) have a good day jon ;)

I was the same way, I tried and tried to grow onions with no success, but growing them in a raised bed has really helped. I couldn't agree with you more. Gardening first and foremost gardening should be fun. When it turns work, that's when I quit. Thanks for sharing another great comment. I hope your garden does great this year.

Denise, I am, too. I will make at least one update video to see what's going on. One thing about it whether they do good or bad I have learned a lot about onions. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Great way to experiment. I got on Hoss Seed website and couple other TH-camrs about onions. I, too, have no experience with onions but just learning.
What has been said is early stage of growth is nitrogen but toward end of growth to stop nitrogen so plant directs energy to bulb and not green tips.
Maybe that is with cutting tops down??

    • @jonbussey5353
      @jonbussey5353  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Todd, I believe the same thing about using nitrogen early, and I show how I fertilized mine in the video I made right before the one you watched. I still don't understand how cutting the tops makes the onion bigger when the green part gives the onion the energy to grow. I have read more since making this video, and I think pruning them when they're smaller encourages growth, not when they are bigger like mine. I guess it's something to try next year. I enjoyed reading your comment. I appreciate the fact that you watched my video even though I admit I don't know a lot about onions. Thanks for watching.

I did know to trim my onion and my onions are pretty ice and big. I make green onion powder with the greens after I dehydrate them, it is so good.

It's good to hear that trimming was successful for you. I'm still not sure if it works, so comments like this help me and everyone else who read it. Great comment, thank you for sharing.

You also have to help your onion by taking a little off the soil around it off as they get bigger, so you can see a little of the onions

Another viewer suggested this, too. I did clear the dirt away from some just to do a comparison. The onions I cleared the dirt away from look really good, so I think you're right.

Grab all the leaves at once for each onion and keep about 8 inches from the onion instead of one leave at a time. Do not cut to close to the onion.

So you have had success by trimming them? So far, I'm not sure if I see a difference between the ones I cut and the ones I left alone. Comments like yours help me understand more about trimming onions. Thanks for sharing. I appreciate it.

You don't have to cut them, cutting them gives the nutrients to the onion instead of the leaves.
