The penguins were super useful when I was playing atlas, sometimes the temperatures would completely plummet and we had to hug penguins by the fire to stay warm lol.
Syntac: I would love it if the pteranodon also had taming like this, when you have to get picked up and feed them. Also Syntac: this is the most annoying tame ever

That penguin at the start of the episode is actaully really good. You can ride it like a seaglide in the water and it can spit deceptively high-damage projectiles
Recommendation for flyer: giga eggs might work because you can't stop it from attacking anything but you might be able to tame it in one or two feeds with giga eggs if it's like the snake taming process.
This happens to me a lot, I feel like ARK knows i'm looking for a specific creature to tame and it just despawns them making it harder for me to find one. Also passive tames can be some of the most annoying, especially if they're hostile
I haven't played with Animals of Atlas, but in Shadlos' Atlas Imports mod, the Leatherwing is way more than an improved Ptera. It's the ultimate flyer : it has the C-spin attack of the Ptera, it has a lot of weight (plus weight reduction) like an Argy, and can grab the same creatures too, it glides similarly to a Griffin or Snow Owl... The only thing it doesn't have is a ranged attack like Wyverns, otherwise it'd be all of the most useful flyers combined. Also I find absolutely adorable their little shriek when they're hurt XD And the tame is waaay easier than this :P
Syntac please use your powers to convince them to give us this map with the mods on all platforms for making us wait so long for ark2. This is a gorgeous map with all the locations and different animals. This guy did a hell of a job on this map!!!
To answer your question about the cross hairs. When you look at the ground it will pop up. Hit C. It's an extremely fast dash/divebomb. If you are you touching the ground, it will slide you super fast along the ground.
I think you would just clip through it. From what I've seen of ark catapulting, it is generally done when a creature of high speed hits something while swimming that redirects it's path. From that, I don't think the mechanics of the elevator would work to catapult but I really hope it does.

The best way that Ive found to tame these is to just follow them on a pteranadon on passive and following you.. They'll pluck you off of it.
