  • This is one of those upgrades that no tractor bucket should be without. We show our process for adding a bucket hook to our Kubota BX23S.

    Good job Lucas. If people don't like the weld, then tell them to stop looking at it. Just be careful in case what you are going to pull does not snap and come back at you. I almost lost my truck windshield when my winch cable snapped. Take care and stay safe.

      Whoa, man! I’m always concerned about stuff like that. Good advice for sure!

    The difference between a good welder and a poor welder is the amount of grinding! Haha! Awesome job. That's something I need to add to mine as well.

    Hi there When I was about 10 my dad put one on an old IH tractor and it worked real well a year later we added one on each side . that was 58 years ago Over the years various co.s ive worked for weve done the same thin to wheel loaders and even excavators, they were all appreciated and well used.

      Nice! I’m betting I Will add more at some point. I’m already finding it very useful! Thanks for the comment!

    That was one of the first things I did when I got my welder. I added a hook to my bucket. I didn't buy a weld on hook either just took a hook off a chain and welded it on. It is so handy! I think those welds look pretty good. No pin holes in them or big globby boggers, That's what matters. Nice work Lucas!

    You're gonna love it!! Now you need two more....one on each corner. I still haven't painted mine and they've been on over a year!

      I’ll probably be adding more at some point. I have used it several times already. Way better!

    Hi Lucas, just joining the family of BX owners so I’ve been checking out videos on just what this tractor can do. But I’ve been mig welding for years so throwing some advice your way on welding, “always push your weld instead of pulling, it’ll make a better weld and look better.” If it’s a vertical weld, start at the top and go back and forth between the two metals. “Happy Welding”

      Awesome advice! Glad to get it. I think I’ve always pulled because I didn’t know. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Thanks!

    I learned the same way. I beat the crap out of it with a hammer and if it holds I clean it up with a hammer. If it still holds I paint it. If it don't... I do it again.

    • @PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead
      @PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Seems legit. Lol. In all seriousness, it isn’t nearly as hard has guys want to make it sound and ugly welds can hold plenty for anything I’m doing. 👊

    Good job! Welds look fine! One suggestion is to have at least 2 hooks. I welded both of mine in alignment with the arms for stability and strength. I said heck with the Kubota orangle paint and went with flat black. I already had it. Just for rust prevention. Looks fine and works great! I use my hooks all the time.

    Great Video! You should consider nocking down the hard corners on the angle bracket. This might be a good safety improvement to help with lacerations

    Well, my channel is Fabbed Fun, not Fabbed Well. Not even Fabbed Decent. LOL. The welds don't have to be pretty when you are aiming for functional. I bet it holds just find for the types of things you'll lift with the Kubota. Cool video - keep up the great work!

    Yup it was the new paint that you bought...its got more orange in it. When I bought my spray paint they asked me what year my mackine was. And of course told me I had the wrong can in my hand.

    Sitting here in my office looking at the screen from a couple of feet away,,,,, looks PROFESSIONAL!! 😂😂. I eventually learned to weld once tig welding became reasonably common. I had an old stick welder for forever. I could weld as thick of steel as I wanted and it held. Looked kinda terrible, but it held!! You are not entirely wrong about your theory. Haha.

    • @PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead
      @PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I ran 1/4 in x 1.5 angle accross the whole bucket and welded the hooks to the angle iron. Strengthened the top of the bucket. Put 2 hooks in line with the bucket cylinders

    Looks good man! Don’t worry about the youtube experts on the welding job! Im in healthcare by trade and im doing the same as you with welding-trial and error haha
    I welded hooks on each side of my bx23s bucket about 12 inches in. Doesn’t look perfect but functionality is all i cared about and it’s solid!
    No doubt you already know on the paint but i got a 6 pack of the Kubota 2 orange (krylon brand) for about $40 on eeebay. So you can definitely stock up for later that way. Seems to match pretty good too
    I also added a clevis mount in the middle of my bucket on the inside upper lip. May come in handy someday for using a tow strap or something! Keep up the amazing videos!

    I have a 100amp Lincoln mig. Have had it sense 08. I use Flux core .35. Bought hooks from Harbor Freight less then 10.00 for 2. It was one of the fist thing I put on my sub compact.
    On your weld. If u put a small weld on top and on lower under weld to make it 45 deg weld.

    "Chick(en)s dig my BX!"
    The first thing I did with my BX is weld a couple of hooks onto the bucket (right at about a week into owning it). I had the same problem with getting matching paint, so I just rolled with two different colors of orange on the bucket for a few months until I happened to find some paint labeled as "Kubota Orange" at Tractor Supply. It really didn't bother me to have the two different colors -- I didn't get the BX as a status symbol.
    As far as the welds go, as long as they don't fail, they're strong enough. It's not like bucket hooks are all that "structural", and it's not like a BX can lift thousands of pounds. If I *had* to critique those welds, I'd say they were a little cool...but I'm in no way any kind of a welding guru and I tend to run hot and fast with my welds. Aside from the heat, I can only think of two things I really would have done differently:
    - I would be to have cut a couple of "ears" off of that angle iron and fit those ears into the gap on the bottom of the hooks for a little extra welding area (you'd get a "triangle" of welding area along the hump and bucket, instead of the gap).
    - I would have used more of an up-and-down or "zig-zag" motion on the big part of the hook body to bring a little more weld into the mix. Maybe even multi-pass the big part of the body... That hook is thick so it absorbed a lot of heat.
    Kudos for actually welding it, and not using the "tack tack" approach to try to make it look like a "stack of dimes".
