    A lot of people don't understand how tricky machining can be especially once you scale up. A mistake of 0,02mm can scrap parts that cost ten thousands of euros. Machinists have a job that requires a lot of knowledge, craftsmanship, intelligence, math and strength. They also also make the world go around! Much respect to all machinists out there!
    Great job on the part btw.

    You should machine a big-ass spike from a really skookum material like N690 steel, give it a very sharp but also sturdy pointed tip, harden & temper it and polish that sucker to a mirror finish. Then mount it on the hydraulic press and stab the crap out of stuff. I bet you could easily stab an anvil with such a tool.

      I thought about tungsten (actually, cuntstain-targlide, the paragon of materials) too, but it's probably too hard to machine. I really think N690 is the way to go.
      Also, if we're talking exotic materials, let me throw in amorphous metal. Put that through the ol' gargler and get your mind blown.

    5 start!? My math doesn't go that high :)
    I do want to know what part of the machine this goes to. It's hollow so it can't be for anything that's high load, but the 5 starts give a lot of speed and torque. It starts on either end and meets in the middle, so I would assume there's a matching left and right side that it attaches to. Whatever the case, that's a LONG worm gear.
    Guess I'm gonna look up a paper mill and see what I can find.

    What is the purpose of the giant threaded thing? Why does it thread from both ends into the middle?

    • @Beyondthepress
      @Beyondthepress  6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      It's paper machine roll and the thread probably keeps the paper in center of machine. I am not totally sure since I am not paper machine engineer

    • @adomix

      Beyond the press actually it streches the paper from the middle to the outside, so it doesnt wrinkle on its way to the next roll.

    • @mephInc
      @mephInc 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      adomix2002
      Well that answers my question......a bit.
      Why the 5 start? Couldn't they go with a simple 1 start worm and just change the roll speed?

    • @aritakalo8011
      @aritakalo8011 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Bearistopheles do you mean the rotation speed of the roll? You cant exactly make it roll slower. That would hamper production. Paper machines roll at pretty insane speeds for their size, since the faster the rolls go, the more paper you make. So everything is optimized to go as fast as possible.
      As non paper engineer I would say the reason for five threads is proper pitch. It also is probably optimized to guide the paper correctly without tearing it. And they want even threading so doing it with one thread would mean either to tight pitch or too sparse thread.
      Metso or whoever made the paper machine probably had some finnish engineer optimizing that thread pattern for a year, because Finland.

    Did you say that is off a paper machine, if so my dad retired from one here in Natchitoches, Louisiana in the US and my brother is working at one in Counce, Tennessee, I did work at one too as construction electrician But I'd never seen one of the roller being made. Awesome

    What is the big roll normally used for?
    Why is there plastic inside if it is used in paper factory?

    Did some sumerged arc build up welds on a steel mill roller that big once, how much material do you think is removed in this process?

    What was the giant roll made out of? Some sort of steel or was it stainless?
