"Harden" is not really the greatest work of the NOA translation team. Other translators have provided the translation of "Stiffen", as a more accurate representation of the original Japanese name of the move. It's much more understandable for a Snorlax to stiffen than to harden, outside of the famous Snorlax mating season.

If a usually useless items video comes out I have a suggestion for it, Chansey in gen 4 UU sometimes runs mail to prevent it from being choice tricked since trick/covet/knock off can't get rid of mail
A funny set I liked to use sometimes back in gen 5 was Fling Iron Ball Bisharp for that 1 time 130 Base Power stab physical dark move. Was good for when you switch sharp in to scare something out just so you could Dome the switch in for big damage and not suffer from the detriment of holding Iron ball.
Mamoswine also used Peck when Buzzwole was in Gen 7 UU, it would never OHKO it from full, but Mamoswine used FLYINIUM Z to Supersonic Skystrike it onto oblivion. Good times.

The poster child of questionable movepools is how kyrem black can't learn ice punch despite having an arm made of ice, and wooper can despite having no arms. But the full list is several miles long, especially when considering gross base stat to move mismatches that kneecap the utility of a mon. (Like pre gen 4 sneasle, both ice and dark were all special on a mon with all attack and no special attack, and after the split it was still disrespected by its available moves)

I brought confide primeape to a draft league semi finals once because my opponent had a xatu so I could selfactivate defiant on the switchin, long story short, opponent didnt bring xatu BUT confide ended up coming in clutch, lowering the opposing tangelas special attack so my camerupt could stall out sleep turns and I won the game because of it

That tier is always fun to play, I love when the ladder is more populated. Seeing Rhydon using Zap Cannon as an actual viable option to 2hko Cloyster is just fun. Resttalk Sunny Day is Moltres' only viable set rn, which just looks insane compared to today's gen 8 meta. Great video, and fantastic music choices in this one. When Duelists of the Roses started playing, I was in heaven.
@@Begeru I didn’t until I ended up facing down curse skarmory in a very shitty position and found spamming growl would win me the PP war and keep me safe from all attempts to set up with curse. It forces them to either switch out cause they’re doing pitiful damage (which Miltank can just heal off when it needs to), or stay in and let you regain momentum. At least in my experience.
Yeah it just has way more pp than curse so you can just keep clicking it until they run out and prevent them from accumulating boosts. Snorlax is the big bad curse user you usually use it on, but growl has so much pp you can even do it multiple times if they also have pretty much any other curse user that isn't Machamp

My favorite part is moves with adverse affects you'd never notice under usual circumstances. Such as gust & air cutter being able to hit pokemon using the move fly. Or that when triple battles were a thing Dragon Pulse is the only non flying type move I know of that can attack the all the way across the field. So if your lucario(at least in my usual case) is on the left side of the field you can smack that pokemon on the opponents right(your perspective.) Which makes positioning more strategic & fun so you can just randomly dodge moves that wouldve been sent your way then retaliate
Funny enough howl is probably the only reason why zamazenta c didn’t drop down to OU. Without the ability to boost up it was just a defensive Pokémon that couldn’t run an item or heal in any way so it would only hit hard once or twice
Porygon is an absolute FUCKING ANOMALY in gen 1 and I absolutely love him for it. Stuffing certain snorlax sets and mew. Fucking mew somehow, but porygon don't give a fuck, and will defy logical thinking, the laws of physics, and the natural order all over the meta. By forcing you to sac your "Obviously better pokemon" while keeping your "Obviously better pokemon" in the back. You do not "handle" porygon traditionally, you do not simply "kill" it and be done with it. Most of the time its going to give the opposing player psychological damage in the form of beaning the top 3 normals despite all odds and logic. No pokemon has made me more excited for it, confused, baffled, bamboozled, and not gonna lie, a little scared than gen 1 porygon. Forget gen 1 "slowbro tier" there needs to be a fucking "gen 1 porygon containment facility" so that he can't wreak havoc on this realm any longer.
It's funny bc if Porygon was even like 2% crappier it would be unusable, but it just happens to be EXACTLY not crappy enough to 1v1 some of the best pokemon in the game
I used to run a team based around sacrificing everything for more power, featuring Belly Drum Marowak and Guts Ursaring, as well as Shell Smash Clamperl with Deep Sea Tooth. Since the entire strat required free turns so you could boost with a move that made you even more vulnerable and then attack with a base speed less than 60, one of my supporting options was prankster volbeat. Prankster t-wave and encore paired nicely with u-turn to try and get some free switches into something that now slower and had a 25% chance to do nothing at all, but when I went to fill out the 4th slot I realized that roost mostly served to waste everyone's time on this type of team. So I scrolled into those "usually useless moves" and there it hit me. Instead of spamming roost while Volbeat was overstaying it's welcome in front of an already paralyzed pokemon, I could do what it was truly meant to do and actually further the goal of facilitating the legendary Clamperl sweep upon its demise, and that is the story of how I came to run prankster Flash. (Which sadly I recently discovered can not be repeated with Ursaluna, as GameFreak pried it away from everyone in the game, including my poor firefly.)
I know I'm kind of late on this, but like you mentioned with submission, there's a lot of liberal translations with move names with aerial ace being more literally swallow return (a sword technique from japanese folklore) and things like fire blast (daimonji) being a reference to a festival in kyoto. Basically what I'm getting at is dugtrio clearly has more swords and slashing ability than flygon by virtue of having no arms.

One thing I like about Pokemon Masters is how it makes usually useless moves into very helpful moves in Masters due to changing from 1 v 1 turn based to 3 v 3 gauge based Tackle and Gust, 1 gauge cost each, thus can be used to let a partner Pokemon use a 3 or 4 gauge attack more frequently Growl and Leer, 1 gauge cost each, provides debuff to all three opponents whilst still being able to attack, as well as all the 1 gauge benefits Even weather setting moves are more valuable in Masters than weather upon entry, simply because able to set weather at least twice is still more than setting it once
Sometimes Zacian uses Quick Attack in VGC, I think to get an advantage in the lategame when health is low. Wild. Or maybe she just flexes that she’s so strong that she can use such a low power move
Priority really can make or break a game sometimes. Sylveon occasionally uses Quick Attack, I've even run it on Choice Specs sets with no attack investment. It's still really funny to see on a legendary that doesn't even get STAB, even a low power move is a power move considering Zacian has so many other options lol
@@cinnasauria These days, I think you could consider Quick Attack the worst good move. It's super weak, comes from the one type that can't deal super effective damage, and is often outclassed very quickly, but it's a priority move that deals damage, which automatically makes it useful
Quick Attack is actually pretty decent because it's the same type as Fake Out. Normal types like Purugly that learn both get two priority STAB hits, meaning they don't need speed investment. It's not amazing but there are few things in Pokémon as satisfying as demolishing a legendary with a fucking Purugly.
I wish Copycat would come back, I had a fun Copycat Jinx set. Z-Normalium Jynx could either snag an accuracy buff or a speed buff from Copycat or Lovely Kiss. Copycat lets you snag useful set up moves, and the extra accuracy makes blizzard and lovely kiss like 98% accurate (brain bad math hard) Z-Copycat also uses the last Z-move, so you can get sneaky revenge kills with it.
Lorelei's Slowbro was too ahead of the competitive meta i guess, boy if Slack Off was existed in Gen 1 and used also Leftovers. It could Water Gun people to death.

Dppt Mamoswine facts: ground/ice was such astoundingly good neutral coverage that Mamo didn't really need moves besides eq/ice shard. You had two free move slots for niche cases. I've seen Blizzard for skarm, Knock Off, Superpower, Curse, and, yes, Peck. I got the heracross ohko once and I felt legendary.

I’ve used quick attack leek sirfetched in natdex. It’s not good, but it makes people not switch out low health threats after first impression stops working. I had the duck to kill Ghold, before realizing it was banned from natdex.
I use Klefki a whole bunch in Nat Dex AG and I sometimes run Magnet Rise. It's fun to lure in strong physical ground types with Klefki and just Magnet Rise Foul Play em to death.
Please keep making videos like these, they're awesome. Especially the Gen 1 Ubers video, it was both extremely informative and entertaining. It had me wanting more after 40 minutes lol. More longer videos like that would be sick, but I also understand if it's not feasible.

I am from the future (gen 9 pu) Some people are starting to run Water Pulse on Cryogonal because it hits Magcargo and Hisuian Avalugg for good damage. Yes, Magcargo and Avalugg have an okay niche in a tier that isn't made up. And people are using the move that Mudkip learns at level 12 or something to counter a niche pick. You won't find these words in the Bible.
I remember playing a Rock team back in Gen 7 Monotype, I hated lead scarf Excadrill so much that I ran String Shot on my Shuckle just to fuck with it 😅
I understand that the focus of this topic is on conventional Pokemon meta. Though I must say, moves like Tackle, Bubble, Ember, etc. became real useful in PLA when perfecting dex entries required 40 or more strong/ agile style moves used. Combo it with catching multiple of the same mon with the same moveset and increasing one's shiny odds doesn't seem nearly as daunting.

Fucking mew somehow, but porygon don't give a fuck, and will defy logical thinking, the laws of physics, and the natural order all over the meta. By forcing you to sac your "Obviously better pokemon" while keeping your "Obviously better pokemon" in the back. You do not "handle" porygon traditionally, you do not simply "kill" it and be done with it. Most of the time its going to give the opposing player psychological damage in the form of beaning the top 3 normals despite all odds and logic. No pokemon has made me more excited for it, confused, baffled, bamboozled, and not gonna lie, a little scared than gen 1 porygon. Forget gen 1 "slowbro tier" there needs to be a fucking "gen 1 porygon containment facility" so that he can't wreak havoc on this realm any longer.
It's funny bc if Porygon was even like 2% crappier it would be unusable, but it just happens to be EXACTLY not crappy enough to 1v1 some of the best pokemon in the game

I used to run a team based around sacrificing everything for more power, featuring Belly Drum Marowak and Guts Ursaring, as well as Shell Smash Clamperl with Deep Sea Tooth. Since the entire strat required free turns so you could boost with a move that made you even more vulnerable and then attack with a base speed less than 60, one of my supporting options was prankster volbeat. Prankster t-wave and encore paired nicely with u-turn to try and get some free switches into something that now slower and had a 25% chance to do nothing at all, but when I went to fill out the 4th slot I realized that roost mostly served to waste everyone's time on this type of team. So I scrolled into those "usually useless moves" and there it hit me. Instead of spamming roost while Volbeat was overstaying it's welcome in front of an already paralyzed pokemon, I could do what it was truly meant to do and actually further the goal of facilitating the legendary Clamperl sweep upon its demise, and that is the story of how I came to run prankster Flash. (Which sadly I recently discovered can not be repeated with Ursaluna, as GameFreak pried it away from everyone in the game, including my poor firefly.)
I know I'm kind of late on this, but like you mentioned with submission, there's a lot of liberal translations with move names with aerial ace being more literally swallow return (a sword technique from japanese folklore) and things like fire blast (daimonji) being a reference to a festival in kyoto.
Basically what I'm getting at is dugtrio clearly has more swords and slashing ability than flygon by virtue of having no arms.
And submission confuses all the English-speaking Pokémon Unite players.

One thing I like about Pokemon Masters is how it makes usually useless moves into very helpful moves in Masters due to changing from 1 v 1 turn based to 3 v 3 gauge based
Tackle and Gust, 1 gauge cost each, thus can be used to let a partner Pokemon use a 3 or 4 gauge attack more frequently
Growl and Leer, 1 gauge cost each, provides debuff to all three opponents whilst still being able to attack, as well as all the 1 gauge benefits
Even weather setting moves are more valuable in Masters than weather upon entry, simply because able to set weather at least twice is still more than setting it once
Sometimes Zacian uses Quick Attack in VGC, I think to get an advantage in the lategame when health is low. Wild. Or maybe she just flexes that she’s so strong that she can use such a low power move
Priority really can make or break a game sometimes. Sylveon occasionally uses Quick Attack, I've even run it on Choice Specs sets with no attack investment. It's still really funny to see on a legendary that doesn't even get STAB, even a low power move is a power move considering Zacian has so many other options lol
@@cinnasauria These days, I think you could consider Quick Attack the worst good move. It's super weak, comes from the one type that can't deal super effective damage, and is often outclassed very quickly, but it's a priority move that deals damage, which automatically makes it useful
Quick Attack is actually pretty decent because it's the same type as Fake Out.
Normal types like Purugly that learn both get two priority STAB hits, meaning they don't need speed investment.
It's not amazing but there are few things in Pokémon as satisfying as demolishing a legendary with a fucking Purugly.
Quick Attack + Swords Dance Zacian also hardcounters ReviveCats in gen 9 NDAG.

Z-Normalium Jynx could either snag an accuracy buff or a speed buff from Copycat or Lovely Kiss.
Copycat lets you snag useful set up moves, and the extra accuracy makes blizzard and lovely kiss like 98% accurate (brain bad math hard)
Z-Copycat also uses the last Z-move, so you can get sneaky revenge kills with it.

Pokémon that learn odd moves is classic. Nevermind the obvious laughs like Togekiss with Drain Punch, Wooper with ice punch, a Ghastly with the elemental punches... I'm thinking back to gen 4 and the mental image of Pokémon like Camerupt or LICKILICKY performing the move Explosion.

I’ve used quick attack leek sirfetched in natdex. It’s not good, but it makes people not switch out low health threats after first impression stops working. I had the duck to kill Ghold, before realizing it was banned from natdex.
Entei was once forced to use Rock Smash as a coverage option for how awful its physical movepool was
I use Klefki a whole bunch in Nat Dex AG and I sometimes run Magnet Rise. It's fun to lure in strong physical ground types with Klefki and just Magnet Rise Foul Play em to death.
I love klefki. Magnet rise is definitely one of the coolest support moves ever

I understand that the focus of this topic is on conventional Pokemon meta. Though I must say, moves like Tackle, Bubble, Ember, etc. became real useful in PLA when perfecting dex entries required 40 or more strong/ agile style moves used. Combo it with catching multiple of the same mon with the same moveset and increasing one's shiny odds doesn't seem nearly as daunting.
