Don't really ever post comments but honestly the Mario 'non-assist' on the Kariya goal is my favourite moment ever from my favourite player ever. Not sure anyone else in the world makes that play in that spot.
you can really tell Richter froze for a second when he thought Lemieux was the recipient of the pass; but by the time he realized it wasn't Kariya already shot the puck and dove too late. What instincts Mario Lemieiux had........ amazing player. I always thought he was the best player in hockey not Gretzky.....
Iginla did not get nearly enough credit for this game. He scored twice and was involved in both of Sakic's goals. But he was always humble. What a player.
Yes... he had great calls for pretty much all the canadian teams, called the Cup Final in Canada for 28 years, but he did not had an iconic moment with the national team yet. After calling the heartbreak of the shootout in Nagano, he deserved that moment.
The team with 13 Hall of Fame players with 2 that are borderline, plus very good players like Smyth, Foote, Jovo, etc... Probably best team if they are all in their prime
You also had Brodeur in net and Pronger, MacInnis, Blake, Niedermayer, and Foote on the back end along with Nieuwendyk, Shanahan, Peca, Owen Nolan, and Eric Lindros as some of the great forwards too!
@@skullcandy005 we would have won gold in 1998 if Canada would have let the greatest of all time take a shootout shot. Lindross hit the crossbar and Gretzky would have buried it.
... Thank-you ... Iggy was always there so apologies are unnecessary ... truly a incredible game !!! ... crazy day for me ... was to be a day off - no, had to work in the retail pharmacy ... was a clinical pharmacist (hospital) but always on-call in the community ... but that day all the retail pharmacists were "sick" - so I am #1 - RATS - there goes the game !!! ... got to the pharmacy & found a very old clock radio in the stock room - amazingly it worked - even more amazingly I found the pre-game only in FRENCH !!! ... a true MIRACLE because I am French fluent ... was not very busy because everyone was at home watching the game ... the few customers who came joined me as I translated the play ... again, an incredible scene ... but I did not know who the commentators were ... does anyone know ??? ... of-course the commentary was brilliant ... wonderful memories !!! .... likely the best hockey team ever !!!
Probably the greatest hockey team ever assembled. lemieux, sakic, yzerman, pronger, mcinnis, iginla and the list goes on. What a game, still gives me chills!
Team Canada Roster: Ed Belfour Rob Blake Eric Brewer Martin Brodeur Theoren Fleury Adam Foote Simon Gagné Jarome Iginla Curtis Joseph Ed Jovanovski Paul Kariya Mario Lemieux Eric Lindros Al MacInnis Scott Niedermayer Joe Nieuwendyk Owen Nolan Michael Peca Chris Pronger Joe Sakic Brendan Shanahan Ryan Smyth Steve Yzerman
Lol Smyth just bawling at the end of the video! Gotta love him! I cant believe the last time the best on best tourney was in 2016! Bettman robbing us of watching McDavid and Crosby together on Team Canada. What a tournament this was hilited by Waynes press conference and of course finally winning the Gold medal. Beating the US on their own ice was a nice added bonus! :)
man, I really hope Crosby can hang on for two more years... We can still get him and McDavid. I know he might be not in his best, but still... Crosby is Crosby. We all know his greatness. And McDavid will be there too, God forbidding anything serious.
Coming back to watch this before our fellas start thier quest in Bejing. I feel like we're never gonna capture the magic of Salt Lake City, or Vancouver again, I hope I'm wrong....
.... Mario's brilliance - does not need to touch the puck to influence the game (were you watching Wayne) ... would have enjoyed seeing what Mario would have accomplished with Mark, Yari, Glenn, Paul, etc ... he did not have or need a bodyguard - did not YAP then RUN AWAY ... played like a Super Star & won Stanley Cups wearing a huge "bullseye" ... saw him play 5 times - the "moves" in confined space while slashed/hooked/grabbed was something to behold !!!
That team was stacked with talent imagine that was a single nhl team they would win the Stanley cup every year but its just for representing canada still cool that canada does have the best hockey players in the world
I'll say what about it: two captains, two leaders, two men that led their teams through intense years of rivalry and were, for that moment, united for y'all in Canada. And of course, two techinically great players. In the final especially, Sakic was the uncovered energy wire regarding impact.
On that day; Canadian and American troops were fighting side by side. Nothing can separate the greatest allies the world has ever seen, except hockey. Go Canada Go.
Iginla was a champ I still say Calgary beats Tampa lol. What a great time for NHL Legends. Playing for country is something sp many new players have barely had the opportunity
Joe Sakic is the only member of the "octuple gold" club. He's the only player in hockey history to win all of: 1) World Junior Championship 2) World Championship 3) Summit Series/Canada Cup/World Cup 4) Stanley Cup 5) Olympic Gold 6) President's Trophy (NHL Regular Season Champion) 7) Conn Smythe Trophy (NHL Playoff MVP) 8) Hart Trophy (NHL MVP) The closest is Jonathan Toews; who is only missing the Hart Trophy. Viacheslav Fetisov, Igor Larionov, and Patrice Bergeron have 6; all missing Conn Smythe and Hart trophies. Alexander Ovechkin also has 6, missing Olympic Gold and SS/CC/WC.
The 2 players with the most 100 pt seasons are Gretzky and Lemieux, not surprisingly, next in the list is Dionne with 8 and he did that playing his entire career on mediocre teams, the most Iginla ever got was 98, true, Dionne played in a higher scoring era but Thornton scored over 100 three times while playing in the same era as Iginla.
Due to an error when editing, the Iginla goal is missing. My apologies...
You had one job
don’t matter ‘CAUSE WE STILL WON, BABY! lol
It''s ok. We all saw it in other docs and I was fortunate enough to see it in SLC. Thank you so much for posting this!
Blm
Well you better fix it And also add IGGY S assist on the golden goal in 2010 🇨🇦
Jeeeeeeoooooeeeeeee SAKIC!!!!
Still gives me goosebumps
Don't really ever post comments but honestly the Mario 'non-assist' on the Kariya goal is my favourite moment ever from my favourite player ever. Not sure anyone else in the world makes that play in that spot.
Its pure genius!!!
It's the only time I've ever seen it in hockey.
Marleau made a similar play in 2010 for cory perry's goal
you can really tell Richter froze for a second when he thought Lemieux was the recipient of the pass; but by the time he realized it wasn't Kariya already shot the puck and dove too late. What instincts Mario Lemieiux had........ amazing player. I always thought he was the best player in hockey not Gretzky.....
Agree. Smartest hockey play I've seen in 40 years of watching.
Iginla did not get nearly enough credit for this game. He scored twice and was involved in both of Sakic's goals. But he was always humble. What a player.
I remember Yzerman always praised Iginla during his playing years.
This was the year Iginla became the first player to win the Art Ross Trophy and Rocket Richard Trophy in the same season
Not to mention his assist on crosbys goal in 2010. The guy was just a stud. Plain and simple
Sakic, Yzerman, Iginla. Not a bad line. Not quite Gretzky, Lemieux, Hawerchuk, but a good pretty darn good.
Both announcers never mentioned his name during both goals called him the shooter lol
That is amazing hockey intelligence letting that puck go through his legs on the Kariya goal. This was a great game.
Completely underrated play
“Surely that’s gotta be it!” One of the most iconic calls from the legend that is Bob Cole.
Yes... he had great calls for pretty much all the canadian teams, called the Cup Final in Canada for 28 years, but he did not had an iconic moment with the national team yet. After calling the heartbreak of the shootout in Nagano, he deserved that moment.
These 2 teams are unreal.
So many legends
Sakic, lemieux, kariya, yzerman, iginla, etc etc, what a team
Definitely gotta be one of the greatest ever assembled
The team with 13 Hall of Fame players with 2 that are borderline, plus very good players like Smyth, Foote, Jovo, etc... Probably best team if they are all in their prime
The Canadian dream team!!!!!! 💯
Plus Gretzky in the front office
You also had Brodeur in net and Pronger, MacInnis, Blake, Niedermayer, and Foote on the back end along with Nieuwendyk, Shanahan, Peca, Owen Nolan, and Eric Lindros as some of the great forwards too!
One of the greatest games ever played
Wayne Gretzky was jumping up and down with excitement at the third goal. That’s why we love him.
He said in his head I wish I was able to be on ice again...
@@skullcandy005 we would have won gold in 1998 if Canada would have let the greatest of all time take a shootout shot. Lindross hit the crossbar and Gretzky would have buried it.
4:40 "Sakic and Yzerman, what about this duo?" Chills.
Both absolute beasts during that tournament
i miss seeing all these guys playing hockey :/ this line-up was godly.
5:30 Iginla taps the ice faking being a US player, causing a blind pass that led to Sakic's goal
O_o I never even noticed that move, smart player.

Jovanovski and Blake as a D pairing is just crazy good.
That Fake by Mario is a thing of beauty
That Kariya goal. What a time for Lemieux to debut that move.

Our 2010 team was amazing but ethis 02 team had a legendary cast.
Probably the greatest hockey team ever assembled. lemieux, sakic, yzerman, pronger, mcinnis, iginla and the list goes on. What a game, still gives me chills!
Its close, that 87 Canada Cup with Gretz and Super Mario was pretty special too.
The old guard breaking the 50 year curse. Then in 2010 the new generation restores the glory.
What a great bday present. Amazing game to watch with so many fantastic hockey players. Chills.

Such an unreal lineup...
I’m red white and blue all the way, but seeing my favorite player ever Paul Kariya score and win gold somewhat eased my sadness.
Once a Mighty Duck, always a Mighty Duck !

Shame on Brett Hull for playing for the US.

Bob Cole and Harry Neal...name a better duo
Gary Thorne and Bill Clement.
that line of Yzerman, Iginla and Sakic. Could you imagine what they would do in the NHL?
Coming back to watch this before our fellas start thier quest in Bejing. I feel like we're never gonna capture the magic of Salt Lake City, or Vancouver again, I hope I'm wrong....
This musta been a tough loss for the Americans losing on home soil
@Jason Franklin So? They play for American teams. They're still Canadian.

Why did they skip Jerome Iginla’s goal?
Yes!! I cried like a baby.
That was awesome . The MSG Goal went from New York to Salt Lake City
Strong! by the Americans at home reaching the finals once again however a bit less lucky this time compared to 1960, 1980 and 1996 (WC).
That move by Lemieux . . .
4:54 Gretzky saying “fuck yeah!!” Lol

I miss Bob Cole's calls so much.
5:48 Bob Cole's call to end the TSN 1200 radio morning show. RIP Bob.
It's a Canadian game🇨🇦😊!
Watching this in memory of Bob cole
I heard that the Rangers real horn from 1994 was used in the 2002 winter Olympics hockey
I remember this game. So one sided. Not in shots but overall play. The USA had barely carried any play. They were out played. Out classed
What a stupid line...Sakic-Yzerman-Iginla
How do you stop that lol
Rip Bob Cole, you were the best!

getting this recommended again after latvia got its first win against Canada 🇱🇻🇱🇻🇱🇻
Both teams had such amazing rosters, but that Team Canada was disgusting, so many legends.
This game was the high water mark for Olympic hockey. 10x better than the miracle on ice.
Not a chance, the Miracle was a monumental upset. All this game was is one all star team beating another all star team.

I'll say what about it:
