All I can say is listen to an interview taylor had couple years later, where he was happy the ref stoped the fight and said he should have stopped earlier. Because of the damage he had received.
Taylor was getting pounded, round after round. You could see Taylor was breaking down. Taylor was ruined in this fight. Chavez was destroying him, yet the announcers kept saying Taylor was winning. We could see it was a matter of time before Taylor went down. Chavez is the best.
Maannn respect for both fighters. They gave those fans a heck of a show. Bravo to both fighters bravo. Julio Cesar Chavez had 107 wins, 87 by KO and only 6 loses and 2 draws. Those numbers are crazy. Someone else mentioned in the comment section how much they miss '80s and '90s boxing and I couldn't agree more.
This was the golden age of boxing when they would actually box.. not run/sprint all over the ring for 3 minutes at a time and then claim to be the goat. Chavez will always be 🐐
To be fair, Taylor's a great champ with a stellar amateur career, which does explain the sheer volume of punches he's throwing the whole fight. But, compared to what JCC was doing.. he's throwing bombs for the kill.
I wouldn’t say humiliated. This was one of the most intense back and forth fights I can think of! Two warriors just giving it there absolute all!! The rematch was also very good!!
I didn't see any back and forth. I saw Chavez break down a great fighter. Taylor looked good to the tv and HBO commentators but any real boxing fan could see Taylor was headed for death.
Lampley said Chavez is "on the verge of going down" and is "reduced to head hunting", then throws more body shots.8:50. Lampley was my favorite commentator but was drinking during this broadcast.
Lampley was a village idiot, always picking sides before fights and then commentating from a one sided perspective. But he wasn’t the Lone Ranger at this, many commentators were one sided unfortunately.
@MrBluesmeister well said! I could never stand Jim Lampley, and he was a big part of how/why boxing declined. He always made up the storylines and told the drama before it happened, and tried to cater the commentary to those story lines, rather than covering the fights in an unbiased manner watching what was unfolding in the fight. He was so far up boxing establishment's ass, that they knew they could count on him to help back up the fights that were being fixed, and would trash and disgrace decent boxers. The whole HBO / Showtime crew would do the same, and I've been so sick of hearing Lampley, Letterman, etc. use their bully pulpit to voice their condescending opinions about boxers/managers over the airways. Boxing shouldn't be about which fighters you like or what story lines sound nice, it should be about what fighters actually won. He was also a big part of the money made from moving boxing from free on broadcast stations, to pay cable then pay per view, which diminished audiences, and rather than take a stand against it and wanting to get boxing back into the hands of the people, he loved being one of the glamourous people who got to milk that & take money off the massively hyped up promotions they were doing. BOTH of these fights were stopped way too early, and they were both clearly decisions favoring the chosen boxer. Rather than rail on that and call them out for it, Lampley just backs the referee and judges. At least Letterman called it out on the first one. Similarly, they were so far up their buddy Sugar Ray's backside that they were glowingly praising him the whole fight vs Hagler, despite that he never once troubled Hagler in any way. They also never once called out the absurd scorecard that had it 118-110, and was obviously fixed. They never got on Sugar Ray for refusing a rematch despite how controversial the decision was. They never got on Sugar Ray for waiting until after Hagler announced his retirement, to then come out of retirement himself, and fight a different boxer. It was so absurd how he was just given carte blanche to duck & hide, while being promoted as their golden child. There were just too many decisions like this that they sat idly by as they went on. They also went on a long tirade against Norman Stone, during the Ruiz vs. Jones Jr fight, because Stone was pissed the ref kept letting Jones Jr get away with headbutts & low blows, but would quickly separate the fighters, so Ruiz couldn't fight inside, which was his strength. Lampley went on with a lengthy diatribe how he was glad Stone was never going to be heard again after that fight (despite that he's a legendary trainer, who had Ruiz back fighting for belts later on, still). There's no place for character assassinations like that from the media calling a fight.
The HBO commentators bias was so obvious in this fight. Imagine if Steele let it go, Chavez lands one more, Taylor dies. Then it's oh why didn't Richard Steele stop the fight 🙄
I watched this fight and saw Taylor with speed, flash, and a very clear bias coming from the announcers. I also watched Chavez beat Taylor half to death while Jim Lampley was saying Chavez was trying to stay on his feet. To be clear, Taylor almost died because of that fight. He was never the same. Of course, Lampley thought Steele was a villain for stopping the fight. I thought Steele called it right, as Taylor was out on his feet. I liked both fighters for different reasons, but Chavez was a hard, hard Mexican machine that knew one thing: keep punching. Meldrick was the second coming of Sugar Ray with mesmerizing speed. But there was nothing that could have prepared him for Chavez, one of the great throwback pressure fighters of the modern era. Sad to see such a promising young man get hurt so bad; his heart was strong, but Chavez took him apart.
I remember having to mute the commentary it was so bad. I mean look at Taylor's face, Chavez surgically closed both of his eyes. This was a great fight and Taylor earned respect from a lot of fight fans but if they think this was a unanimous decision they were watching the fight with serious bias.
Salvador was faster, could knock you out with either hand and had speed that blinded you. Oh yea he was Mexican and had a chin of iron if you could hit him. He was great because he never quit like Chavez against De La Hoya second fight. Great but not the goat! Ask Tyson and Roy Jones who was the perfect fighter.
That’s your opinion and I respect it. I think Salvador Sanchez was good too but that ain’t my era I was lucky to be 6 years old and watched Chavez fight!! Just like Michael Jordan made me fall in love with basketball Chavez made me fall in love with Boxing 🥊
I remember that fight, and it was one to remember. That was when boxing was really boxing, not like the crap there is right now. But you can see that even back then, Latino boxers were hated on. You can just hear the commentators giving all the positive words to Taylor and nothing to Chavez. Some things never change
It's not "latino" as much as it is citizenship. Don't be ignorant to the fact that the Mexican broadcast was hailing Chavez the entire fight (rightfully so, since JCC was in control after the 5th round).
@Suntzur well I'm not from Mexico buddy, so don't be ignorant to the fact that this is the UNITED STATES of America, and racism and discrimination STILL EXISTS
@@mikeflores104 LOL!!!! Do you struggle to read English? I never implied that you were from anywhere or that racism doesn't exist. The words you were whining about weren't racist, they were biased toward the boxer from the announcer's own country. EXACTLY the way Mexican broadcasters have LOUDLY been pro-Mexican fighter. Since you seem intent on whining about racism, how about you tell us a country that doesn't have it so we can begin ti emulate them.
Absolutely, I was looking for the comment that stated it. All positive words and praise for Taylor and just so negative toward JCC. Even at the end the commentator says, " If he (Taylor) gets up, he probably wins the fight", foo just got rocked!!!
Saw this with an Army lightweight champ. I had Taylor ahead before the stoppage. My Army buddy said, "No, no, you'll find out Chavez really hurt Taylor, badly." Sure enough, Taylor was never the same after the fight. Chavez really hurt Taylor's body, eyes, and everything else!
Totalmente bien analizado! Chavez un campeon de box profesional dando una paliza con golpes de poder vs un pulpo que parecia boxeador de estilo olimpico, literalmente Chavéz lo retiró y termino su carrera
Chavez was a fighter like ko other. He was the best ever in my eyes. A true warrior with balls of steel. Didn't he go like 90+ fights without loosing? That's insane!!!!
Ppl always focus on the stoppage but never look at the round. He was going. He started walking to the wrong corner after 11 for Christ sake lol. Not to mention the major wobbles and stumbles after he swung and missed completely cartoonishly falling over with more than a minute left. Not to mention you’re technically not allowed to hold the ropes while the count is going once you get to your feet. Had he not had any signs of damage or to that extent, I’d object but 20/20 hindsight we see JCC while being outpointed with ease, was making him wear every single punch and he clearly carried it long after this fight.
💯 Exactly what I was thinking. All the wobbles, stumbles, loss of power, loss of speed, loss of accuracy, and all the face damage M.T showed before the TKO while JCC was still standing well.
Haha when Richard Steele waived it off, it took Taylor 3 seconds to even react to it not to mention he wasn’t responding when asked if he was ok to continue. Idk how this a controversy at all great stoppage by the ref.
@@jamesescamilla1112 It came from an accumulation of fights, not just the Chavez fight. Watch his next world title fight with Aaron Davis. Some fans reported him sharper than he was in the Chavez fight. Aaron wasn't in the same class as Chavez, but he was young, strong and undefeated.
@canibusnj nah man, Taylor was bleeding internally in the hospital for a month! His head, especially the temple area was swollen so bad he definitely was concussed with permanent damage!
I remember going to work the next day and l had lost my voice screaming at my television watching this fight. I love both men and didn't want either one to loss. How hard that must be for Taylor and Duva. But total props to Richard Steele. Larry Merchant made himself look stupid when he said Steele should have gave Melvin those two seconds because he worked so hard and deserved them. If a ref knows there is two seconds or twenty seconds or forty seconds left on the clock then he doesn't have total observation on the fighters! Good man. Good ref. Good call. Good fight.
Melvin? Of course he should've given Meldrick those 2 seconds. He was on his feet. Stop with the "He was just trying to let him fight another day" bull crap. If he lets the fight go on, the bell ends the fight. This was the biggest scam in boxing history. And Richard Steele was in the mix of another boxing scandal.
@@tjmckenzie4048 If they were in the middle of the ring he probably would have made it to the bell. Many fighters have taken too many shots being held up by the ropes. And again, good refs watch the fighters not the clock. And IF Steele was in on a fix he damn sure wouldn't have waited till there were only TWO seconds left in the fight! If someone had the fix on it would have been for way too much money to cut it that close. And another thing, what if Taylor was the one throwing all the punches in the last 15 or 20 seconds? Steele is just going to tell whoever threw the fight, "Sorry, l tried"?
@@tjmckenzie4048 why give taylor 2 seconds? Why not give them to chavez? Let Steele say "fight", have chavez hit taylor at 3:02 with a right from hell and send him to the morgue. Oh wait, that wouldn't be fair, would it?
@@RM-fb6sj Meldrick earned the right to fight for those last 2 seconds. You don't let 2 guys pound the crap out of each other for 47 minutes and 58 seconds and then say you're trying to protect a fighter with 2 seconds left in the bout. Absolutely sickening!
If you rewatch the 1st match at the knockdown Taylor was still holding onto the ropes to hold himself up, the ref grabs his arms to try and pull him off the ropes to check if he was stable but he was holding on for dear life. Hence, he called off the fight. This is just my honest opinion.
Ever since I can remember i love to watch boxing matches with my dad and Julio Cesar Chavez was by far our favorite boxer. There's many many legends in boxing ..too many to name them all.But I guess being from Mexican descendant our loyalty will stay true to the GREAT JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ #GOATJULIOCESARCHAVEZ#1BOXER
I think he was not only the best Mexican fighter at the time, but maybe even the best pound for pound in the world. I'm from Indiana in the USA and I always admired the great Mexican fighters of that era. I think that Salvador Sanchez was a fabulous talent and he would have been champion for a long time if not for the tragic accident that took his life. Mexican fighters of that era were fun to watch and I know how closely the Mexican people followed their favorite fighters. I miss the excitement of those big fights, but it's nice to know that you and your father had a special bond from watching those fights together.
Meldrick took some shots.. one tough dude.. @54sec left he took two shots that would flatline many. He was out on his feet with 24sec left... the rest was pure heart... What a fight... Damn
From El Salvador , Chavez is my all time Favorite along with Mike Tyson. But I do say this Taylor he is one of the greatest to ever step in the ring, mad respect...
Those two stars shined brightest than ever during this fight. You had to be a beast to beat Meldrick that night. Chavez came thru after enduring more shots than ever. Two of the best that night
The way that the first fight was called seemed like it was called by fools that couldn't see the pounding happen and all of the goose eggs that were closing the eyes of Taylor.
It didn’t start showing up until Round 8 or 9. At that point, everything that looked like glancing blows from Chavez started adding up and skyrocketing.
@@danielhenderson8316 Richard Steele stated that Chavez was landing hard punches all throughout the fight. You could hear the thud but most were blinded by Taylor's flashy punches.
I remember a boxing coach on tv broke down the last seconds of the 1st fight. He said Chavez led Taylor to the ropes. Taylor followed him. Just to turn him and expose his open side. To throw the power punch. Chavez's experience was on full display.
I am Mexican and I feel a lot of respect for Meldrick Taylor because he deserve it. He did impresive fights as he was so close. although I was and will be a fan for JC. But those fights were the best fights ever seen keeping us in suspense. The two guys will be remember for long time.
History proves that both fights may have saved Taylor's life. Looking at him a few years later he can barely talk. Chavez is a boxing legend and i am so glad I got to see so many great fights in the 90s.
Yep! Taylor lost everything his speech, his motor skills, they said Taylor pissed blood in the hospital. Now imagine his brain. Rattled like maracas, mostly Meldrick lost his mind.
Dude that guy could barely talk before the fight. Chavez don't hit half as hard as tyson, foreman, wilder, beterbiev, probably not ever as hard as gervonta davis
@@lovinv08those guys ko in 1 shot, JCC hits hard enough to do real damage but not to flat out sleep someone. Those are the most lethal type of guys. An accumulation of 300 or 400 punches is way worse than 1 ko punch. JCC changed Taylor's brain forever that night and for the worse.
The simple fact is, the ref is not allowed to consider the clock in his decision to stop a fight. The simple fact is, if this had happened with one minute left, everyone would have said the ref saved Taylor's life. This was a TKO victory for Chavez. He worked for it. He earned it.
They have a timekeeper for a reason. Knowing the time is not the rough job and that's why there is a timekeeper. The rest job is to completely concentrate on just the fight. And every amateur ampro is tired if you go down and you get back up you respond immediately to the referee and let him know you're okay. Regardless of why Taylor did not respond he didn't Richard still didn't know how much time was left and he did the right thing.
That was an amazing display of fighting from both.. I love watching fights that are like that. Reminds me of the first time I saw Pacquieo fight...I couldn't believe it was just non stop throwing punches! Respect

I watched the whole thing for the first time and honestly this probably was the best match I ever saw on my life😮 remarkable Chavez knew what the hell he was doin 😆🚬😶🌫️🍺🥃🃏
that was heartbreaking for Meldrick Taylor, being a Philly fighter, he couldn't just stay away and box for the last round. Tough one, great fight, one for the books
Who cares about the 2 seconds left? Pro boxing is not about gifting someone the fight for the effors. Taylor was in lala land and that officially makes Chavez the winner. AND, you can not be saved by the bell in the last round. Whaching Chavez break down Taylor in the 2nd fight was a thing of beauty.
Actually, IBF rules at the time stated that a fighter could be saved in the last round only. If Taylor had said jibberish, it would have made Steele ask if he was OK again and then the round would have been over. You can’t say nothing to a ref after he asks twice if you’re OK after a knockdown and expect that you “deserved” to win.
yup that is true, Meldrick Taylor is a true champion. with a big @$$ heart. my Respect to Taylor. even the Great champion Julio Cesar Chavez said this was his toughest fight, this is the closest to death he has felt.
Dude yeah, i remember always thinking the same when i first watched in 2014. So much beautiful head movement and counters by Chavez they just blew it off and gave taylor major props even when punches were blocked by chavez gloves. Also there was an instance where Taylor threw combination and chavez used head movement and they would say "chavez is hurt!". Like no.
This was such a great fight. Both boxers were incredible. There were a few things that I noticed after watching this video that I didn't fully appreciate before. Chavez's defense was pretty darn good. A lot of those Taylor punches in those fast combinations were blocked or avoided by head movement. Chavez counter punching was excellent, he was landing hard right hands and left hooks throughout the fight. Just look at Chavez at the end of the fight, not a mark on his face. Meldrick Taylor had one heck of a chin. Over the course of the fight, he took a frightening beating and was essentially ruined as a fighter because of this fight at only the age of 23. As for the ending, Richard Steele was 100% correct in stopping the fight. If you go back and look at the video, he waived off the fight with 5 seconds remaining, not 2 which everyone argues. Taylor was wavering back and forth trying to steady himself by holding on to the top rope. He looked confused. Steele asked him twice if he was ok to continue and Taylor not only did not respond but looked away. Taylor was out on his feet and in no condition to fight. In five seconds, Chavez a very strong and accurate puncher could have got off a half dozen punches. As it was, Taylor was hospitalized for four days after this fight. Can you imagine the possible outcome if Chavez landed even one more solid shot on a thoroughly beaten Meldrick Taylor who was in no position to defend himself?
Shortly after the first fight between Chavez and Taylor, I ran into Referree Richard Steele at a Las Vegas Denny's. I asked him for his autograph and the first thing he said to me is "You must be a Chavez fan." He was a very nice guy! I never forgot that day.

This is why I stopped paying $$$ to watch FAKE American-Boxing. For example Mayweather, the most GLORIFIED boxer in Boxing history and other FAKE American.

You're never gonna be the same after a fight like that absorbing that many hard shots.
All I can say is listen to an interview taylor had couple years later, where he was happy the ref stoped the fight and said he should have stopped earlier. Because of the damage he had received.
Not only that but the actual post fight interview he said Steele stopped it without asking if I was ok.
Steele said twice are you ok.
The first fight they interviewed JC at his ranch in Mexico the next day. MT was in the hospital recovering.
That’s EPIC! What a Legend!!!

Taylor was getting pounded, round after round. You could see Taylor was breaking down. Taylor was ruined in this fight. Chavez was destroying him, yet the announcers kept saying Taylor was winning. We could see it was a matter of time before Taylor went down. Chavez is the best.
@JuancBracamontenext to Salvador Sanchez.
Chavez will always be 🐐
What fight were these commentators watching ? He looked fresh af and the other dude looked like an alien
To be fair, Taylor's a great champ with a stellar amateur career, which does explain the sheer volume of punches he's throwing the whole fight. But, compared to what JCC was doing.. he's throwing bombs for the kill.
Exactly but one of the best fights ever
Because all the media wants Taylor to win
I NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING THIS MATCH UP BOTH FIGHTERS ARE REALLY TALENTED THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST FIGHTS IN THE HISTORY OF BOXING
I wouldn’t say humiliated. This was one of the most intense back and forth fights I can think of! Two warriors just giving it there absolute all!! The rematch was also very good!!
Surger Ray Lenard and Roberto Duran is another one and they actually had animosity towards each other.
Not humiliated, more like humbled. And then pissed off 😂😂
Morales vs barrera was pretty intense
I didn't see any back and forth. I saw Chavez break down a great fighter. Taylor looked good to the tv and HBO commentators but any real boxing fan could see Taylor was headed for death.

Indeed!
Just imagine if it had been a 12 round fight.
Hopefully, Duva would not have allowed Meldrick to take any more punishment.
Things I learned from watching boxing. Don't ever quit. Don't leave it to the judges to say who won. And respond the the referee immediately.
Julio Cesar Chavez was just plain badass!!!
“It doesn’t appear that Chavez has the stuff to get it done”

So why did Chaves and up Taylor's career???
They were talking way too much sh** , Chavez ruined their night!!🤣
By far . He is one of the greatest fighters of all time.
Meldrick Taylor is just another AFRICAN GLORIFIED by the FAKE American White man just like Floyd Mayweather. Thank you.
Lampley was an ignorant batch that knew nothing about boxing.
As a Hispanic, Chavez fought more brothas than i ever did growing up in Compton.
🤣
whooped them too he would of cooked Floyd in his prime
lol
My pops always said they always threw them big bulls on him. Knowing blacks looked stronger! Lol
I agree 100% Dr.S
nauna kasi yabang ni taylor... pataas-taas pa ng kamay tumbahinn pala..
Well said 👏 👌🏼
This...well said sir. As for Taylor, horrible fight plan/corner, cost him the fight and maybe his boxing career...
“Chavez on the verge of going down” after Chavez had beautifully evaded a flurry of 20 punches 🤣
I think its kinda funny how the commentators say "chavez on the verge of going down" yet he was dancing around unfazed lol
lol!!!!
And then they stayed quiet when he knocked him down
I remember having to mute the commentary it was so bad. I mean look at Taylor's face, Chavez surgically closed both of his eyes. This was a great fight and Taylor earned respect from a lot of fight fans but if they think this was a unanimous decision they were watching the fight with serious bias.
Hablo espanol?
Meanwhile his opponent sliding all over the ring 😂😂😂
Remember as a little kid having all my family over to the house to see this legend fight!! He’s the Goat of Boxing!!!
Just as you said having these fights on tv at family functions when I was a kid is how I remember Chavez! Such a legend

This is the kind of Boxing I love watching Both Boxers are warriors... All Heart, Blood Sweat and Tears
@8:58 Chavez is on the verge of going down, meanwhile he dodged 12 shots in a row lmao
Chavez hit him at least five to one after that point. But the announcers were still acting as though Chavez was about to go down. Strange.
It is SAD that he really had this commitment He was fighting with pure hearth. He never bounced back.. btw he was that damaged.
💯 Exactly what I was thinking. All the wobbles, stumbles, loss of power, loss of speed, loss of accuracy, and all the face damage M.T showed before the TKO while JCC was still standing well.
No Julio was the better fighter all around beat that boy and made him look unrecognizable meanwhile Chavez looked perfect 🫵🏽🤡
This is peak boxing here. None of these fighters nowadays can go 12 rounds like this. It still bring tears to my eyes.
Fighters nowadays could not take the punishment and keep going. Boxers were just built Different back then love it
You’re right!!

Haha when Richard Steele waived it off, it took Taylor 3 seconds to even react to it not to mention he wasn’t responding when asked if he was ok to continue. Idk how this a controversy at all great stoppage by the ref.

I say this, shouldn’t have been knocked down 🤷🏽♂️
@@tjmckenzie4048 why give taylor 2 seconds? Why not give them to chavez? Let Steele say "fight", have chavez hit taylor at 3:02 with a right from hell and send him to the morgue. Oh wait, that wouldn't be fair, would it?

Two warriors and legends never to be Forgotten in Boxing there Legendary.
I never get tired of seeing this story.
If you rewatch the 1st match at the knockdown Taylor was still holding onto the ropes to hold himself up, the ref grabs his arms to try and pull him off the ropes to check if he was stable but he was holding on for dear life. Hence, he called off the fight. This is just my honest opinion.
yo that was a great observation.
Ref also spoke to him and got no response. This means that Taylor is no longer in the fight. It was a good stop.

Richard Steele stated that Chavez was landing hard punches all throughout the fight.

Julio cesar para todo el mundo.🎉

Thats what dogs do. The first fight was one of the best fights I ever saw.
Shortly after the first fight between Chavez and Taylor, I ran into Referree Richard Steele at a Las Vegas Denny's. I asked him for his autograph and the first thing he said to me is "You must be a Chavez fan." He was a very nice guy! I never forgot that day.
