Xnin's parents are AMAZING! Her father deciding not to focus on the sad fact that she will die from this; he decided to be happy in the moment, for the time they had as a family! That's an amazing attitude, for a father who knows his daughter won't grow into an adult. Her family made many memories together and did everything they could to make her last days happy and to make her comfortable and pain free. I'm in awe of their love and strength!

I'm a retired nurse, I've worked, Med/Surge, ERD, CCU, Hospice, and Maximum security forensic psychiatric. But I could not work Pediatric ICU, NICU or burn unit, it's just beyond my emotional abilities and courage. Bless those staff. 😥

I was a student midwife at NICU and I did not encounter anything traumatic? We mainly cared for preterm babies

@@cathyq3834 you were a student, do long term duty, it's different. My best friend from childhood was a NICU nurse for 25 years, very different than just 6 weeks of training girly.
Watching this series really opened my eyes on the whole medical field. I have so much more respect for doctors now. The dedication to their work has to be one of the highest in all occupations.
And nurses too. My 4yo is medically complex and the doctors are great as well but the nurses are AMAZING. They not only help their patients but sometimes the only person there for the mom who is alone with their child dealing with unimaginable things.
They can make a terrible situation so much better just with their attitude and I've only had one bad nurse in my daughters 4 years with many many inpatient stays and surgeries. As stressed as they are it amazes me.

You should already have respect for them this shouldn’t of made your respect them more. Nurses are important too
Don't forget the nurse, even the cleaners play a very important role keeping the hospital clean and safe for all concerned, and their's is not a pretty job to do.
Nurses are the real heros! They save drs' butts all the time, when they write orders for something that the patient is allergic to or doesn't want! They're the ones in the trenches on a daily basis! Thanks to all those dedicated nurses who listen to patients and don't diminish what they're saying!

This baby Aliya is so brave.... Even in such painful conditions she is appreciating things and *Thanking her mother for the minions...with all those NG tube numerous needle pricking.* hats off to this Kid ans really her mother too!

"Allia has to be brave over the next three days"...Allia is just a baby of three! She should never have to be brave. I feel so badly for these babies and their parents. Thanks to these nurses and doctors for their steadfast dedication to healing their patients. You are better human beings than I could ever be.

Life is precious. I feel sorry for this kids. I was once in hospital fighting an infection for 10 days.. each day I would be surrounded by Doctors and nurses taking care of me. My fever wont go down and that was dangerous but they never gave up on me. I thank them each day of my life
I am so glad to see parents get emotional support. When my son had open heart surgery back in 1997 he was 2 years old and there was no such support for parents back then.

The staff here are truly incredible so kind and observant they obviously care very deeply for these children! I am sending all of my love and prayers to these kids and their families!
I wish they could've done a side entry for my son's open heart surgery like they did for Kristy. I've heard the healing is much easier. For my son they had to go through his sternum so now he's part of the zipper club♡
Same...my son had his open heart surgery back in 1997 when he was 2 years old
My stepdad had minimally invasive heart surgery at Stanford heart hospital. They had instruments small enough that went between the ribs to get to the heart instead of taking a bone saw thru the sternum which the recovery would take a month in the hospital and they didn't have that time. My stepdad fully recovered in 5 days
It depends on the type of surgery unfortunately. I've got mitochondrial disease too and I've had 2 open procedures and too many to count via my leg and neck
These patients and parents are so strong and brave. I can't imagine going through anything close to what they've had to go through, and might have to continue going through, especially Xinlin and her family
These children have a strength that is second to none. God bless them, their families and the outstanding medical team taking care of them.

When I was six I was diagnosed with a brain tumor. A year and a half worth of treatment and healthy living the rest of the way makes me a fully functioning adult today.
They solved the constant needle issue with a port in my chest, and I had the same lackluster energy levels.

I collected stickers in my sticker books. I slept.
Mainly I spent the time in the hospital watching cable tv for kids. Rocket Power, PBJ Otter, Blues Clues, Bob the Builder. I scorned spongebob.
Most interesting thing I saw was Pres. Clinton coming to visit the hospital. My window faced the back, and we saw his whole parade of limos etc coming discreetly through.

Wow. I can't imagine what it must be like. I mean I'm 18 and ever since my dad had a heart attack (he's still alive thankfully) I'm always cautious of any chest pain and difficulty breathing.
I got an anxiety attack last year and the doctor just treated me for food poisoning before sending me home. But I had constant anxiety attacks after that until our house doctor said it was anxiety not food poisoning. And that was in a private hospital (god help you if you don't have medical insurance here in South Africa and you end up in a government hospital). I got another anxiety attack a few weeks ago and ended up in the same hospital as before but this doctor was very thorough in not taking any chances. They did a scan (I can't remember what type of scan it was. It had electrodes and stuff) and also did blood tests. They admitted me into the hospital and five hours later they did blood tests again to make sure I didn't have any blood clots or anything to do with my heart. And I'm glad she was so thorough. Because that lessened the time I needed to recover and stop having anxiety attacks.
This is a very insightful documentary. Hoping for more of these!

It’s so heartbreaking to see young children going through these things. I can’t imagine how painful it must be for the family to see their loved ones suffering and not be able to do anything. The families are all so caring and loving.
Hearing that malay mum talking at the end 19.22, really made me tear up ♡♡♡ i couldn't imagine going through seeing my son suffer that way

Omg that poor 3 yr old boy! He’s like x2 the size a boy his age should be! I sincerely hope that if there’s not a medical condition causing him weight issues that one of the doctors says something to the parents! That is not okay!
With his history of bad asthma, it's probably that he's been given steroid medication previously, which can lead to significant weight gain

Pediatric age bracket ranges from 0 to 18 years of age. And even if you go beyond 18 like 19 or 20, pediatric staff could still give medical attention to you. So the 17yr old girl being in a pediatric ward is completely normal.
She is on lots of pain meds, she is very hard of hearing. She had 7 HOUR OPEN HEART SURGERY with general anesthesia. She is in quite a bit of post surgical pain. (I worked for 5 years on the CCU/ ICU step down post open heart surgery floor) All of those issues could be impacting her mental status not to mention her oxygenation and post surgery emotional regulation. It is quite common to have confusion, depression, memory issues and anxiety issues post open heart surgery, especially if there were surgical complications on the table. Due to being on a bypass machine as well as extended general anesthesia. Give the girl a break. She is a hero. ❤
I'm 20 years old, and once a time I came to the ICU via ambulance I was brought to the pediatric ward due to the fact that I look younger and in the end, I stayed there in my hospital stay.
Even when kristy tan has too stay in the intensive care unit she’s still having a positive vibe ❤

It is good to see an up to date hospital for children there. I wonder sometimes ;how up to date hospital care is in other countries. Sometimes practices are even better than the US. Some can be very progressive. I am glad for that.

I dont know that pain after heart surgery would be considered a complication but rather a guarantee Singapore is a very developed country they must have advanced pain management options for short term use after major surgery. So she developed traumatic chylothorax? Yikes how unfortunant. Are they not doing an embolization since this happened after surgery its likely the trauma of surgery that caused it which means it should be easily treatable and have a great outcome. But I wasnt aware that its likely to treat itself with rest and nothing by mouth

Aliya poor sweetie, I worked in Leukaemia ward and everyone parents, Dr's had to wear long sleeve plastic gowns, masks and hand sterilization before going near a patient. Unfortunately I see her mum not wearing gown, hat or gloves. I know it's hard, but they get MRSA very easily and they can be fatal.

Sunny Quackers my niece passed from SMA 10 years ago. When she was born the docs said she would not live past her 1st b’day and she was 1 week short of her 18 birthday when she died.

But aorta coarctation doesn't require open heart surgery unless she also had valvular dysfunctions too! usually, a ballon is put to open up an aorta unless i don't understand

In singapore is it most common for women to pursue specialties in child related disciplines? Or is there a majority of women overall in medical positions? I was wondering because it seems women outnumber men like 5 to 1 and many are doctors. Is this just the childrens section or is it an overall trend
It's definitely an overall trend in nursing globally because historically, caring was seen as women's work, but the ratio of male nurses is improving

I'm sorry if this comes off as ignorant but why is everyone speaking English? Is it something the TV directors asked the people to do to make the show have more widespread appeal or do people in Singapore speak English in day-to-day life.
Yep, English is the first language in Singapore but most also learn a second language (typically their mother tongue e.g. Chinese, malay, Tamil)
@@HighKrasher thanks for the reply. i know most asian countries teach english as a second language so it was a bit of a surprise to find one that uses english as its primary language.
