Please note at 10:00 This info is not correct anymore.. You MUST have a specific clearance to cross ANY runway. You may not cross runways to get your departure runway.
I'm an airline pilot since 28 years. I see and follow these signs every day. However it was great to see this film and get a recap of the exact definitions. Good job.
I had to study these when I took aviation in scouts. one thing most pilots should know is if you see a panel marker with a yellow X on a runway don't land that means the airport is closed, under construction, or condemned you should never land a plane at a closed airport, taxi onto an abandoned or closed runway,or use a taxiway that is closed or under construction. during airshows the airport will place lighted X signs on the approaches this way planes coming in will be diverted to other airports.
I lost it right at 44 seconds into the video when Harrison Ford appeared xD I guess the best way to avoid dangerous runway incursions is to just land on taxiways :D
Another case that deserves attention: an airliner asks the ACC: request descent to FL xxx. ATC responds: "stand by one minute." The ATCo meant to say: "wait, I need time to see whether I can give your clearance now or not"; the pilot waited sixty seconds and begun a descent. People tend to believe and understand what is aligned with their intentions.
aside from these 2 trying a bit too hard to b be fun and excited, i love this video. it is extremely helpful as a tutorial to help me prepare for starting flight training in the spring, very easy to follow and understand and apply !!
please airboyd, uploaded again this video, i cannot hear a thing, looks like an amaizing video. and thanks for all the incredibles videos already uploaded.
Whenever I would work using the ground frequency, I used to add a short reminder/reinforcing message for pilots taxiing to a holding point, right AFTER giving departure instructions, like so: "upon reaching holding POINT, call tower frequency XXX.XX; by adding these few extra words I prevented possible runway incursions. I reasoned that pilots are too busy and the mind retains more easily the last words of messages. Also, I know that rookies tend to adjust themselves to the work environment by copying the behavior of more experienced ATCos, so I encouraged my colleagues to question whatever they knew that they were not fully aware of. It takes a long time to figure out how certain words may be misunderstood. Ambiguity is insidious and expressions like "cleared into position" become part of the aviation jargon, prompting anxious pilots who are eager to depart, to hear "cleared to holding position" and "understand" instead "cleared into position".
I've never seen a video with a better production value... wow these people are REALLY good at acting, and the green-screen effect is almost impossible to notice! GOOD JOB GUYS! -_-
Pilots and air traffic controllers should be encouraged to join Forums and discuss super important topics like how misunderstandings happen and what can be done to prevent them, what can be done to give us a hint that we may have been misunderstood... I don't know whether or not it is a true story, the captain says to the first officer: "take-off power, willing to go around, but the first officer reduces the power...
Yeah same here,I remember landing on a 31 L then being cleared across the active,31R,But I Looked first..here comes someone landing, they amended it quickly but I was taught to look no matter what!!
1Netbum like driving. My dad told us when we were 16 and learning to drive: You may have the green light, but look both ways before proceeding. You may have the right-of-way, but you'll be just as dead.
Ford can probably speak to the subject than you. And he is probably a better pilot than you. Talk is cheap, what have you ever done for aviation troll?
At least one thing has changed: you do not get automatic clearance to cross inactive runways based on taxi instructions anymore, so the part at 9:50 is now obsolete.
A runway incursion on a military base is a serious offence. You can be apprehended, your driving privilege on the taxiway can be suspended, and a hazard report can be reported out and a letter sent to your squadron commander.
excelente video, soy alumno de piloto comercial hoy tuve esta clase y este video es un gran refuerzo, muchas gracias por compartirlo, lo pasare a mis compañeros , gracias
Even though the audio was not even like many complainted, it's free people, the material is what counts the most and it's a great reviewing material regardless the low audio on the left. it's free for u to watch any time, as many times u want and as long as u want. I found it very useful, nice review so u learn how to racy in an airport. Do u know ur signs or just want to concentrate in omplainting? emEnjoy it. Nice video I didn't have to buy from King's schools!
Well you can certainly use closed runways or taxiways for emergencies, so the "any purpose" thing is incorrect. But for normal operations, yes they cannot be used.
I work at LHR and I'm a marshall constantly giving signals to international aircraft and its very rare that I make errors or mistake. When I was marshalling in an Emirates A380 I almost fell out of the small scissor lift I was in because I was shocked by its size and it was really windy.
wow! this is great! I think this video covers more about being pilot even I don't know much about flying. Thank you King, and please if you could do one more video about all types of weather and how to read them. thank you again.
I was shocked to see that they recommended you look at the airport sketches on the Internet. By the looks of this video, I thought for sure this pre-dated the Internet by at least 2 decades
john and Martha are very "radio DJ" like in their presentation but it is a good basic tutorial or review for soon to be or veteran pilots good job King schools
Call signs with the same last two letters should be given special attention, too. To begin with, those call signs should be compared and one of them changed.
Why don’t airports have traffic lights in taxiways, runways, aprons and other roads? A simple red-green setup would be invaluable in making movement safer and more efficient. You can place them at holding points, junctions of taxiways, junctions of taxiway and runways to the runway and even the runway itself. Also, wouldn’t a set of highway style hazard warning signs be useful?
The sad thing is that the pilots were not following basic safety rules, and not only on this flight, but the same plane landing earlier - they simply forgot to put the flaps out - there is a warning horn which would have told them but they had cut the circuit breaker to it - I was on a flight once after a snow storm where we were about to turn onto the runway and the flaps were not out - Do I yell if we start our takeoff role without them? It scared the hll out of me - they did put them out, but much later than usual - I ask the pilots upon deplaning and they said they did it late on purpose so as to avoid snow accumulation on the surfaces - I still wonder if I would have yelled out - or rather die than make a fool out of yourself?
Please note at 10:00 This info is not correct anymore.. You MUST have a specific clearance to cross ANY runway. You may not cross runways to get your departure runway.
This VHS tape was made in November 2001. Right after 9/11.
@@MrWolfSnack it looks like its from the 80s lol--- but i love the video because they explain it very clear and its easy to understand

When I saw Harrison Ford the laugh I let out 🤣
Looking at this after seeing him land on a taxiway has me like🤔
Honestly😂
Studying just got alot more motivational now im being introduced by Han Solo
Harrison Ford - "I encourage you to put safety first" says the man who landed on a taxiway 😂
!Jonathon Kearney I was thinking the same thing, maybe he should get pulled as FAA safety spokesman!
He is still human
Thought exactly the same thing when I saw him at the start lol
I hope one of his friends sent him a link to this video. I know I would’ve.
Especially funny now in May 2020 lol

***** yup where I live Runway 31 at Gooding Airport has an X on it because this runway is closed
@9:54 is obsolete comment. Do not cross *any* RWYs without a cross instruction.
The good old days of a blanket clearance....
I lost it right at 44 seconds into the video when Harrison Ford appeared xD I guess the best way to avoid dangerous runway incursions is to just land on taxiways :D
lmao
me too
And those guys who sniped at Harrison Ford have never made a mistake themselves? That's wonderful
MY other ear is *lonely* :(

Thanks for the info..I am a frequent lay man flyer and always wondered what the signs around the Runways and taxiways meant..It was educating !!
Gosh such memories! King Schools is like the Harvard of flight schools!
+EasternMerchant Amen!
untill they got harrison...now im not so sure......he leaves a bad taste
It's explained in simple terms at Wikipedia in the article called "Runway". Look for the section called "Sections of a runway".
Jon and Martha :D FLightsim 9 "FS 2004" Ohhhh the good old times *_*
Anyone LOL when Harry Ford introduced this video? Am i right?!
Probably had to as part of his penance for crashes ?
Oh, hi 240p, we meet again!
I am no longer confused, thanks.
Always a good refresher to watch these videos.

Very good and easy to understand. So helpful the way they explained everything. Thanks for sharing.

COOL! Han Solo addressing Safety at the beginning! And we thought he only flew the Millennium Falcon!!!!
landed that on taxi way too

...most of the signs, lights, etc., mark ==transitions== among different uses of pavements (ramps, aprons, taxiways, runways).
I've always enjoyed King Schools. They also have excellent amateur radio training courses! THANK YOU!

Harrison Ford talking about aviation safety hahaha !
Ford can probably speak to the subject than you. And he is probably a better pilot than you. Talk is cheap, what have you ever done for aviation troll?
sad when spoiled rich people buy their way into expertness
The video may be old, but the information is still the same. It hasn't changed in decades and won't be changing anytime soon.
9/11 changed 90% of FAA laws and regulations regarding airspace.
At least one thing has changed: you do not get automatic clearance to cross inactive runways based on taxi instructions anymore, so the part at 9:50 is now obsolete.
MrWolfSnack, not sure where you got that but it's completely false. Furthermore, this video isn't about airspace.
Loved this very informative vid. Mr. King sounds a lot like Casey Kasem. lol Thank you for sharing.

Great video I watch it over and over, you two are wonderful instructors, thank you for making a differnce
This really helps me for my oops and coms exam
He just recently had a runway incursion at HAWTHORNE.

Are taxiway landings optional? Like if I’m in a hurry. Asking for a friend ...
Lol 😂 so you in corona virus 🦠
thank you captain solo

Well you can certainly use closed runways or taxiways for emergencies, so the "any purpose" thing is incorrect. But for normal operations, yes they cannot be used.
@16:04 why is taxiway if the are on the same path?
I work at LHR and I'm a marshall constantly giving signals to international aircraft and its very rare that I make errors or mistake. When I was marshalling in an Emirates A380 I almost fell out of the small scissor lift I was in because I was shocked by its size and it was really windy.

@EduEnYT Yeah, that may be, but as a pilot I have to say that watching a video such as this is a nice refresher. Safety above all else.
should have watched this video before my ground school stage 1 exam ^_^
My right ear enjoyed this.

She might have wanted to add that the zipper road way edges indicate the crossing of a live taxiway.
It is meant for new beginners in Microsoft flight simulator, and for so they are very accurate!
This really needs the mono track split to L/R channel. I'm happy to do the split if you'll reupload the edit.
Thanks for uploading such a kind of informative video
john and Martha are very "radio DJ" like in their presentation but it is a good basic tutorial or review for soon to be or veteran pilots good job King schools
The video says "2007", but if I had to guess without looking at the date, I'd swear it was 1992. In any case, good info!
General rule of thumb... never cross a solid line without permission.. This applies to GSE....
In an airport I downloaded for FS98, there's a red sign reading "HIMOM". I never figured out what that means.
Harry, you might try identifying a taxiway from a runway and then land on the runway instead of the taxiway.
Somehow, I was expecting Bob and Martha, and then, BAM! Harrison Ford! haha
THATS what those vertical lines on the edges of the taxiways at KLAX means :D
Call signs with the same last two letters should be given special attention, too. To begin with, those call signs should be compared and one of them changed.
Where's that guidance note about not landing on the taxiway ?
Good video. I love how they simply explain procedures.
22:10 - Is a TAXIWAY never named "L" or "R" ?
Last time I saw John and Martha King was on a copy of Fs2002.
Always the big bad biker causing a runway incursion. What a stereotype
Harrison Ford... Runway safety? ROFL
Looks like this was filmed during the TWA-American Airlines merger, or they had some stock footage from that area available.
Great instructions
thanks for posting!! this is really informative..
brilliant video
Very good info,thank you
Great video! very good lesson...
beautiful video perfect... love the clarity of instructions.. very helpful...
he says "are u ready for this" too much
@EduEnYT but in a car the only rule on say a highway is maintain speed and stay in your lane many more in GA
Great video. Very informative!
If only there was a training video about the perils of landing on the taxiway and not the runway.
It would be great if there was sound with this video.
Interesting information.
